I just received my Batson's U3 fly seat in the mail. Its pretty nice looking but I have a few questions about it. First, am I suppose to glue the seat together before I glue it on the rod? Or do I glue up the wood insert to the rod first and then glue the hardware to that? I've never put a fly seat together so I'm totally clueless. Thanks.

I've bought several of these blanks from Bingham enterprises. Call Karen and she'll hook you up. Quick note....8' is the shortest blank you can get this year. But you could always cut it down. By the way, these blanks are awesome.

Roger,
On the other side of that shaft there is a threaded female end that is 1/2 in in diameter. Do they make chucks that would fit that?

10. Re: mandrels?
Roger, I thought about that too, the only problem is that the Drill Chuck attaches to a rod that is on the lathe. I'm going to tinker with it a little bit tomorrow and see what I can figure out. Thanks again for the help. I really appreciate it.

11. Re: mandrels?
Thanks for the info guys, so here's another stupid question.....how do you attach the mandrel to the lathe? I'm using a hobby lathe from adjustable clamp company...here's the link
I'm not sure what I'd need to attach the mandrel. This is the first thing like this that I've bought so I'm totally clueless.

12. mandrels?
Where can I buy mandrels so that I can turn cork? Does lowes or home depot carry them?

I'm getting ready to build a 2wt fly rod using the F662-2 from batsons. I've heard a lot of good things about these blanks so I'm looking forward to the project. Here's the problem. I've never built a fly rod. I'm curious as to how to put the rear grip and reel seat together. Do you place the rear grip even with the butt of the blank, or do you leave some blank exposed? I appreciate any help I ca

I just ordered a little hobby lathe so I can start turning a few cork handles....there's only one problem, I don't have a clue what else I need. I'm just wanting to do some basic stuff to start with, so what tools will I need?

I'm not sure. I'm using a batsons 6'6'' 2wt rod. I'm not sure about the handle or reel seat. What kind of reel seat would you recommend? I'm wanting to build it to where it's fairly nice, but I can't afford to put a lot of money in to it.

17. fly rod handle?
I'm getting ready to build my first fly rod and I don't really have a clue what I'm doing with the handle section. I've noticed some that you buy have metal butts on them that you can screw a fighting but into...or am I mistaken? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon

Has anyone ever used Snake Guides on a spinning rod? Would it work? I'm looking at some Recoil Snake guides and I was wondering if I'm just wasting my time.

I have a little extra cash and I was thinking about buying a lathe or a power wrapper. Is there a reasonably priced power wrapper that I could use to turn cork on?

Jay, your right, I'm not sure what I was thinking. That lamiglass blank I listed is rated for 2-8 lbs so ...I think I'll probably go for that one for now. I'm open for ideas on what to do with it....handle, reel seat, any ideas?

Darrin, I'm going to be using this rod to fish for crappie, perch, and small mouth bass. The line rating is a little to much on those blanks you mention. I'm looking at something in the 1-4 # range. Thanks for the info tho. I'll definitely look into those .

I'm wanting to build a 6'0 - 6' 6" ultra light rod. I've been looking at a lamiglass IFW78-UL. Has anyone used these before? Are there any comparatively priced rods that are better? Thanks

Ok, I'm getting ready to build a rod on a Lamiglass IFW780-ul. I'm wanting to make it up really nice and I've thought about customizing the reel seat and the the grips. I've noticed that you can order wood inserts that go with skeleton parts. I have no clue as to what I'm looking for with something like this. How do you put these type of reel seats together? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

27. Reel Seats
I'm building a couple of 10' catfish rods and I'm needing a big reel seat. I've looked at mudhole and the biggest one I can find is a size 26 fuji DPSH. I've tried one of those on this rod and it stops at about 33 inches from the butt end. Any suggestions on reel seats?

I do have a subscription to Rod Maker, however I've only been getting it for two months. I really don't have the money to shell out for backissues at the moment.

29. Handles
Ok, I've been building rods for a few months now, and I've built 8 or 9 nice rods. But I'm getting kind of bored with para cord handles and eva handles. What are some different types of handles that I can use/make to make a truly custom rod? Thanks for the info.

Mitch, I was referring to the Mudhole eglass blank. I've built rods out of 5 of them and they've all been great. I have yet to catch any big fish, but I did catch about 30lb boat anchor and it handled it like a pro.
