Toney, You are are right on track with what it takes to size a exposed casting reel seat. I also do what Roger says and size the casting reel seat to fit a inch above final position it will be placed. When building longer rods in the 7' range I will add weight to the the inside of the rod blank at the butt. I use led tape when doing this. I feel that balance is more important than weight when fishing with the rod in a vertical position. This will enable you to have a shorter and more comfortable handle. Simply add the reel to the rod and roll the tap up and dry fit it into the end of the blank

I built a St. Croix 3cmlxf 6'9" set up as a spinning rod and primarily used for drop shot and shaky head. I did test it with a 1/4 oz football jig and was able to hook and land a 3lb smallmouth out of 18' of water with no problems.

I have always based my striper guide size on the spool size on the reel that will be used.[50%] The question I have is with the new reels that are being produced now with the larger spool diamiter. I am finding it could take a 30mm guide to make up for the lager spools. I think this could cause weight problems on a med. spinning rod. Any ideas?
