Toney, You are are right on track with what it takes to size a exposed casting reel seat. I also do what Roger says and size the casting reel seat to fit a inch above final position it will be placed. Keep good records on the final placement of the reel seat and the size of seat you use on each rod you build. This will help you when ordering parts in the future.

When building longer rods in the 7' range I will add weight to the the inside of the rod blank at the butt. I use led tape when doing this. I feel that balance is more important than weight when fishing with the rod in a vertical position. This will enable you to have a shorter and more comfortable handle. Simply add the reel to the rod and roll the tap up and dry fit it into the end of the blank

I built a St. Croix 3cmlxf 6'9" set up as a spinning rod and primarily used for drop shot and shaky head. I did test it with a 1/4 oz football jig and was able to hook and land a 3lb smallmouth out of 18' of water with no problems.

I have always based my striper guide size on the spool size on the reel that will be used.[50%] The question I have is with the new reels that are being produced now with the larger spool diamiter. I am finding it could take a 30mm guide to make up for the lager spools. I think this could cause weight problems on a med. spinning rod. Any ideas?

If you are going to tie a leader to the braid line I would not go smaller than size 8.

David, I also have a customer wanting a spinning rod for Dale Hollow. I believe your customer and mine must have read the same article at SMALLJAW.COM on fishing small jigs in winter. Instead of building the 7'6'' Bronzeback rod as mention in the article I am building a sc370mhf for my customer. I believe this is a versatile rod for Dale Hollow fishing deep water jigs.
