I am in the process of ordering guides for my next Bass build on a MHX MB843. I plan on trying to incorporate the Fuji K guides for this build and spiral wrapping them. What size guides and "model numbers" do I need to purchase? Thanks again for your help.

I have seen some beautiful inlays on rod handles in the photo section. Some of the wood inlays were white and thin and really set the handle off as far as appearance. Just wondering what materials are being used for these types of inlays. Thanks

Best thing I have found is isopropyl alcohol and a rag. Rub it until it is clean and it will dry quickly like new in seconds.

Are these seats meant for spinning or casting purposes? Thinking of using them for a 7' saltwater spinning build. Thanks

My wife and I are heading back to cabo for our 10 year anniversary next fall. I would like to build a rod for this trip. When we honeymooned I was not a rod builder. We had a blast catching striped Marlin and Mahi mahi. This time I think it would be great to fish my own built rod. I need all the help I can get from blanks to guides and even reel seat and butt. I obviously do not fish there

Narrowed my search down to a couple different fly blanks. Each one of them that meets my criteria are 7 foot. I would like to add an extension to one of the pieces and make the rod closer to 7' 6" or 7' 9". Has anyone ever done this and can anyone recommend the maximum length I can extend it without having an effect on the castability? Obviously I would put the extension under the se

Building my first bass rod on this blank. Can anyone recommend which reel seat size to go with? Also making it a split grip. What distance should I use from the butt of the rod to where the reel seat starts? Thanks

Current build is a 7' spinner. Reel is a Penn battle 4000. The diameter of the spool is roughly 50mm. Using Fuji BYAG high frame guides my test casting showed that a size 30 butt guide worked the best with 20lb. braid. Am I off base here. Some of my fellow builders thought that I could get away with a 25 guide to start. The 30 guide inside diameter is 25mm which works out perfectly for the 27x me

The scratch won't be seen. It will be under the reel seat and grips. I am just wondering how deep one can sand before compromising the integrity of the rod. After further inspection it doesn't appear that the scratch made it past the gloss finish. It was on a RCLB70L.

Well in a state of panic and looking around on the net I came across this thread on a woodworking board. I have always used the dark gray 3m pad (7446) for handle and seat assembly per the library article. Which makes me wonder why some people get nervous sanding a blank with sandpaper, especially when the gray pads are equivalent to 150 grit. Just curious on builders opinions.

Because I had an idiot moment today, I scratched the blank while trying to dry fit the reel seat and left scratches in the blank. My question in general is how deep must a scratch be to ruin the integrity of the rod and if I sand it down to see how deep the scratch really is, how will I know when I have hit the graphite? It was a Batson blank with a gloss finish.

Building my first stand up rod and have a question with regards to abalone under the rollers. Do you cut the abalone to the entire length of the roller feet or just to the inside of the opening? I am assuming you put a thin coat of epoxy down over the abalone, wrap the guide feet on with A thread, thin coat of epoxy, then another wrap with A, and two final coats of epoxy. Just looking for step

Yeah the build is for a friend so the build would be free. The RCLB70M looks like what I will be going with. He is telling me that he wants it built as a spinning rod so I am assuming double foot guides or should I talk him into a conventional setup?

Can anyone recommend a blank and components for a Black Drum Rod. A friend of mine went on his first Drum trip this year in the Delaware Bay and is hooked. Now he has asked me to put a rod together for hime. Ideally the build with material should be under $150. Thanks for any suggestions.

Can anyone suggest a good all around spinning blank for walleye and pickerel. I have a customer heading to Canada and wants a rod to handle mostly anything they will run into. I would like to look at something from the batson lineup because I have had nothing but quality service from them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (Rod would be used for throwing spoons and jigging minnows

I decided on a blank and got my new reel as a birthday present yesterday. Now comes the learning curve. I have never spiral wrapped a rod and wanted to give it a try on my new striper fishing outfit. Any suggestions on what guides (particularly size and numbers of them) I should be using and approximate spacing. The blank is a Batson RCLB70L and the reel is an Avet SX. Also what axises shoul

Can anyone lead me in the right directions for choosing a blank for bucktailing fluke? I am interested in using a spinning reel for this application so my wife can use the rod as well. I do most of my fishing in Raritan Bay from party boats or my best friends boat. I would like to keep it as light as possible with some backbone for larger fish. Any suggestions welcomed! Thanks!

Guys, I absolutely appreciate all of the input on the blank selection. I think after taking a look at the Batson blanks, you can't go wrong at the prices and the positive feedback. Batson blank it is . . . RCLB70XL. Karry, I will be sending an e-mail your way with some other technical questions. Hope you don't mind.

I recently booked a striper trip to Raritan Bay in May and the guide said we would be live lining bunker for 20-30 lb striper. He uses Rogue rods exclusively on his charter. I told him I would like to build a rod for the trip. Problem is that rogue rod blanks are out of my price range. I have read other places that lamiglas and batson have very nice blanks for this application. Can anyone su

Could not have said it better myself. The only time i have trouble fitting the plug that comes with the kit is on very small diameter rods such as a trout or panfish rod. Just sand the cork plug down to the final size and glue. PS - Use pressure on the plug and keep pressure on it longer than expected . . . the plugs are harder material than natural cork and will pop out at the worst time.

I am building an 8' 6" freshwater fly rod . . . i guess i get a little too picky with purposely matching finishes. I am holding out on a reel just for this very reason, but i guess the shade of gold on the reels is a whole other animal. My wife tells me i am too picky . . . well maybe.

I am trying to decide on hardware for my next fly rod build and was wondering if anybody had any experience with all of the different finishes. It is just too tough to tell on computer screens. Would bombay gold guides look good with gold hoods on the reel seat . . . can't find any reel seats with bombay finish. Thanks for any input!
