My wife wanted a pink and purple rod. Instead of painting the blank, I used pink and purple thread and colored epoxy to achieve the look she wanted. (NOTE: The photos do not reflect the true colors on the rod. The purple looks blue in the photos.)

I recently tried mixing a batch of epoxy with the small plastic mixing cup on a coffee mug heating plate. I found the mug warmer in my rod room and decided to give it a try. The warmed epoxy mixed together perfectly with only a few very fine bubbles. The thinned, warmed epoxy did not trap large bubbles like thick epoxy is prone to. I was very pleased with the results.

10. Ooops!!
This is what you do not want to see. The epoxy caused the green thread to loosen and come a part. I wrapped the red and white threads in a flash, but I had nothing but trouble with the green thread. I am pretty sure thread gremlins had some thing to do with this!

14. First Fish
My little grandson seriously fished hard for 3 hours before he finally caught this little bluegill in Lake Tahoe. I was so impressed by his determination that he will soon be fishing with his own custom rod!

Roger, that's a good point. I'll try it. I think I will cut offf the cracked WCs and do exactly as you suggest, decorate the blank where the WC was. Thanks!

John, I was thinking the same thing. I was using the manufactures specs but some did seemed tight. I think if I do use rubber WCs again I will use bigger ones to ensure there is no over stretching. Thanks for the suggestion.

Over the last 4-5 years I have been building rods for a number of avid fisherman in Alaska. Each summer I go up and fish with these people, while testing the various types of rods I have built. I always come back with new ideas and modifications for new, even better performing rods.
I have always turned to Batson and Utmost Enterprises to find the products needed to make these changes. I

Thanks guys, I have not talked to either one of you in a while. Good hearing from you. I do prefer metal winding checks but I have not been able to find any that are big enough for these saltwater rods. I'll recheck and see what I can find or I'll try the epoxy or go without. Thanks much and I really appreciate your quick replies.

I have noticed that many of the rubber winding checks I have installed seem to crack over time. I'm thinking of wrapping decorative thread over the cracked ones and covering the thread with finish epoxy. Has anyone tried this and does anyone think there will be a problem doing this as far as holding up to saltwater fishing? Most of the rubber winding checks that are cracking are the larger on

I installed a number Batson EVA handles during the last week. I too had trouble with one grip that I could not get all the down. I had to slice it off with a razor. I figured out the problem was cause by my epoxy starting to set up before I got the grip in place. I was epoxying several reel seats and grips on three rods at the same time. On the last fore-grip, I tired to slide it down to th

Thanks everyone. I'm sure with all this information I will be able to figure out a way to use this thread. I hate to deal with the hassle of returns and postage costs. Thanks again!
