I wanted a contoured grip without a traditional reelseat but I wanted to be able to change the reel easily. The only real problem I had was with the top coat of Spar Helmsmann, you can see a dark patch at the rear of the grip where I put it on a bit to heavy. Oh well, better next time.

Another view of the Zipp plugs. The bottom cap is how they come from the manufacturer. On the Top Left you can see how it looks once you fill it with epoxy. There is a slight gap between the edge of the plastic and the carbon part, filling it with epoxy just gives it a more finished look. At the right you can see how they fit up to the grips.

Here is a closeup of my first split seat rod, and the grip. I did all of the shaping of the cork by hand with a file ala George Roth, tons of fun.

I use Sch. 40 PVC and I have still had it broken....only once though. I typically ship FedEx, it has been my experience that the weight doesnt matter as much as the size of the tube. I tried some thiner wall PVC and since it didnt save any money on shipping I just stick with the heavier stuff now.

Pitching with micro's works fine. If you pitch with anything over 15lb mono/flouro/copoly I would recommend running a size 6 tip regardless of the size micro running guides you use. If you are running straight braid you could get away with say a size 4 tip. Personally I build all pitch/flip rods with a size 6 ring tip and usually size 3 running guides.

Alan,
Come out and fish with the club in the Sept. event and I'll have a few you can check out. For off the shelf and fishing in our area on the rivers I'd recommend the St. Croix Avid 70MHM . We can do ALOT better custom, but for off the shelf that's what I'd look at.

Chuck,
I've had the cottonwood shut down my micro rods quite a few times. It tends to clog in the tip or first guide after depending on the size of the tip..drives me nuts. this is with mono..

I'm with Steve. I have a few plumbers in my club...they get all of my PVC. Nice thing is when I need something done at my house they take care of it.

28. Re: Frog Rod?
I'd do the XP3 874...that thing is a beast, but is pretty balanced. I've built the Batson IMB944...far to tip heavy without a balance kit.

Oh wait...you meant when I built it? Oh...I tried..I usually forget to do it though. A serial number with the date encoded would be nice.
