I'm with Alex and Mike. I built alot more of the carbon fiber formed grips than I want to. Same response as Alex also.... love/hate. Personally, I HATE making them...but they sell well, so what can you do.

94. Re: sealing cork
Herb,
I have been using the U40 product when I do burl mix grips to bring out the grain so to speak. I have been doing a second coat to give a slightly higher sheen to it and have not had any problems with it being slippery. Similar to the carbon fiber grips, the shape matters more than the slickness of the surface. If you like burl cork with one coat, two looks great. I havent tried tru

I make sleeves with the same material as the stik-jackets for my rods.....they do a good job of protecting the guide when you pull the rod out. I would replace the guides with the same and send him a sleeve...or tell him where to buy one.

I've used a few. I just ream very slowly and then use an exacto knife to clean the edge up. Works fine.

Emory,
I'll agree with you on that. The rods I balance require very little in regards to sensitivity...but a lot in regards to comfort. I balance for comfort.

Heh, the two techniques I balance for have anything but light bites. I think this thread makes it pretty obv

100. Re: rod balancing
Phil,
Being that I am just a dumb firefighter....I have no idea how the math and physics apply. I do know how a real world fishing situation applies though. I think this discussion board has proved time and time again that simple math doesnt generally ring true with the real world use of a rod.
As roger mentioned the balance isnt important in the casting rod of the rod...it is importa

101. Re: rod balancing
I would tend to agree for almost all techniques. In general adding weight to a rod is just counterproductive. The only time I like it is for two very specific uses. First is a longer frog rod, the blank I use is VERY tip heavy...considering that you basically LAUNCH the bait and then move the frog with mostly the reel I like the balance in my hand. The other specific use is for longer "

Well, I had to pare down to six for a tourny as a non-boater this year....
1) Shikari FS764 - gotta have a flipping stick
2) RX8 XSB843 - Built casting for all of my plastics
3) BS706-Sglass - Built 6'6" For generall cranking needs
4) 3C68MXF - Can do pretty much anything at all
5) 3C69MLXF - For where I fish I absolutely need to have a dropshot on.
If I didnt need the drop sho

I built myself a wooden hand wrapper with plans that were in Rodmaker when I first got started. I used it for about five years and then upgraded to the Pac Bay RW3XL. I'm glad I had the handwrapper first, it was more than adequate for the job. The powerwrapper just simplifies things a bit for me. Over the years I added a drill press, scroll saw, bench grinder, wood lathe. etc. etc.
But,

I'm not a fan of split seats on spinning rods, I just don't find them comfortable. I am mixed when it comes to casting rods. For larger dia. blanks I will split a reelseat for weight savings, more blank contact, and aesthetics...customers have come to expect it. On smaller dia. blanks it can be pretty uncomfortable...for the middle of the road blanks I use the castaway seat...for super small

I personally don't think you can compare the two. The RX8's feel much better to me than the RX7's. Other than a few moving bait techniques I don't use the RX7's anymore....if only they would build an XSB802.75....then I would be set.

I have been using the ISB802.75 for that technique....works nice. no trimming required.

Looking at the spinning tools it looks like they could be made from drill rod fairly easily. Not sure about the cutting tool though.

Robert, My guess is that the pitching problem you are running into is with the tip size. I had problems pitching w/ the size 3's and 17 or 20 Copoly and Flouro...when I went to a size 6 tip the issues went away.

Marty,
I use primarily Batson H ring micros. I use size 3 guides for up to 17lb. test Mono, and size 4's for anything heavier. For anything over 15lb. I use a size 5 or 6 tip top.

I put them on everything other than the carbon fiber grips when I use an aluminum trim ring. Like others have said they just provide a better fit up.

I am building two of the SB812's right now. They have a perfect power and action for shakey head...don't know about the sensitivity yet.

Building a pair of the SB812 blend right now...very nice blank. Would love to see that in a non-blended version also.

As mentioned UV and heat are terrible for Mono and Copoly....not sure about FC. I have access to the big bulk spools of McCoy and tend to stock up before Tx. season...I like to purchase only enough for one season and then restock each year. I order direct from McCoy so I am fairly sure I am getting fresh line each season.

117. Re: batson blanks
I use quite a few Batson blanks. I have broken one blank to date. An XSB843....about 10" from the tip, but I would hardly call it an epidemic with Batson products.....if people were breaking them left and right people on here would know about it. And dude....it really makes no sense to "decline" their offer to replace the blanks...I don't think that impresses anyone.

Dr. H, Thank you for creating this table. I will be putting my SASE in the mail this week. I'm looking forward to seeing more and more bass rod builders using this system and contributing data.....And while I'm on that topic I would be glad to host and maintain a list of casting/spinning blanks for anyone interested. I know the current data site is limited in that regards....but the fly info

Jon, great to see NFC paving the way and putting out good info for their customers.
I think this perfectly illustrates why people think CCS is more useful for Fly rods. Dr. Hanneman has mentioned several times that the conversion of Cents to ERN could not be linear due to the desire of the ERN to equate to AFTMA line ratings. The concept of a conversion for fly rod builders makes perfect s
