I use a Opaque Paint Marker in the extra fine tip It is a liquid you shake up before using. (Available at Michaels) The gold and silver colors are very beautiful for writing on rod blanks. The cost is about $3.29 per liquid pen. Marvin Engel

Tim, I am using the same size pulley that is on the Rod Wrapping machine. I made my own pulley using a piece of Nylon rod I had. All I had to do was just drill a hole and then run a tap that matched the set screw and I tighten it down on the shaft and it works fine. The jaw I am using is the cheap one that came with the Rod Wrapping machine. I have purchased the aluminum spindle 3 jaw chuck t

Jim, I will take a look at the Website. We do have some permit over here in the surf, but not as many as you all do over there. We also have a few Snook, but only out on the ends of the Jetties. My Dad lives in Port Mansfield in deeper south texas and they catch snook quite oftern down there. They have more snook the farther south you go from the Port Aransas-Aransas Pass area that I normally fi

Mike, I looked at my motor after reading the above replies. My motor that is hooked up to the small rheostat box does have brushes. I do not know much about electrical, that is why I had the electrical supply store expert set me up so I would be compatable with what I wanted. I even took my rod wrapping machine in my pick up bed to show them what I was going to use it for. I did not want someth

Thanks for the information Billy. The tackle store I purchased the P904 at also had some G-Loomis 7'6" Burgundy colored 6-12lb. class blanks, but I wanted something in the 8-17lb class. I believe it will turn out to please me when I complete the setup. Again thanks for the information Billy.

Mike, The whole setup is 110volt. The motor, rheostat everything. I just had them match up everything so I would not overload anything or burn the house down. Mike, My e-mail address is: BigMCharters@yahoo.com Marvin

Tom, I do have 2 sets of the single foot guides. They are very light in weight. I will use the single foot guides since I have not placed the double foot guides on yet. Do you think I need to put a double foot guide for the first one closest to the reel? I will be using this setup just for the winter months down here fishing on the end of the jetties by boat in 30' to 50' of water and up

Mike, I went down to the local electrical store and purchased acontrol box called a Rheostat. It has a knob on it and you can adjust the rpm from barely turning to pretty close to I would say around 120 RPM's per minute on mine. They set me up with a small motor basically the same size as the one that I have on my American Tackle Rod Wrapping Machine. I just turn the knob clockwise for faster

I recently purchased a G-Loomis P904 1 piece blank in the 8-17lb. class. Does anyone own this same identical P904 set up as a casting rod? I will be placing 8 double foot fuji guides on this blank. I am going to use it for Redfish and Speckled Trout (Live Bait and Artificials)once completed and wanted to know if it performs as good as I was told it would. I have never owned a G-Loomis before.

I have a Turncrafter Pro with 54" bed with the 9 piece Barracuda chuck with 4 sets of jaws, etc. I am really satisified with the lathe. It is very simple to work with and the Barracuda chuck kit is awesome. Your mind is the limit when working with this setup. I mainly purchased the lathe for turning cork and to make wood handles for Rod Blanks. I also make Topwater lures, Suspending lures, S

All my rods I have on my boat are built by me. My rods get used by a different bunch of clients each trip. They have held up great even after going through the wear and tear of being used and jerked and dropped and everything else that happens to them being in different hands each trip. It does make you feel proud that something you built will hold up to extreme use. They are a little scratched

I have plenty of Mesquite wood. Fresh cut and plenty of dried Mesquite. I want to turn some mesquite into the same size as the standard cork rings(1-1/4"OD X 1/4"ID X 1/2" wide and go from there. I will also probably make some one piece handles out of Mesquite and bore them on my wood lathe. I appreciate all the information.

I want to use Mesquite wood to make a handle on one blank. Do I need to let the Mesquite wood dry for a couple of months before turning, or can I use it fresh cut off of the tree? I want to stain the piece of Mesquite after it is turned to desired size. Thank you, Marvin Engel

I am building a rod using Burl Cork. What is the best stain or product to use to make the grain stand out with detail to get the best appearance? I still have to turn the OD of the cork to my preferred comfort fit. I just needed some opinions from Rod Builders with experience using Burl Cork and getting the best appearance that can be acheived with satisfactory results. Your help will be greatly

I have been using Gudebrod Size A Metallic on all my rods. I even use it for the 1/16" wraps with no problem. I use 6lb. fireline for the pull through loops since it is a slicker type line it pulls through with ease without damaging the outer foil on metallic threads.

Bill, This material I purchased at Michael's craft store down here in South Texas. It can be handled. It comes in 5-1/4" square sheets separated by thin paper. I have touched it and it is thick enough. I believe it is normally used to wrap ornaments to make them stand out. This material is just a little thinner than tracing paper. I can cut it to desired shapes, but only with a new exacto

I have purchased a small packet of the Metal leaf composition. I want to cut out various small fish designs, etc. Has anyone used this type material before? Will it fade out in direct sunlight over time? This material is thinner than tracing paper. It will easily conform to the shape of the rod without a problem. My main concern is the durability in sunlight. It does cut with precision u

Bartosz, I only use Size A thread on all my rods. I strictly use Rods in the 7' length with 8 to 17lb. class medium to medium light rods. They are absolutely beautiful when using Size A thread. The Size D thread does look like rope on smaller diameter rods. I double wrap all guides and it is plenty strong for large Redfish and Speckled Trout. I fish for a living and all my clients always commen

I have been restoring some more older rods I have. The problem I am having is after I coat the rod with Gudebrod rod varnish and after it dries, it will still scratch and come off. Do I need to apply another product before or after I coat rod with rod varnish? Also, on factory rods, is the varnish baked at a certain temperature to keep it from scratching so easily? I noticed on new rods I hav

Dave, I save the sanded cork in a ziploc and use it with the 2 part epoxy mix. I put quite a bit of cork sawdust mixed in with the epoxy mix and force it in the cracks while it is set up in the dryer mode on my rod wrapping machine. Then I will spin the rod for about an hour depending on humidity and then the next day sand it down flush with the original OD of the cork. I do use alot of cork sa

Tim, When I tie the Palomar Knot I use a little saliva and it will draw up the knot snug up on the top radius of the hook eye. This is the best method of tying a hook to your shock leader. Down here where I fish for a living, I only use the palomar on all my hooks. It is a very reliable and durable knot. I use it for Speckled Trout and even on Redfish down here. I have never had a failure on

The reel is the Penn Sailfisher 130. It even has the original fishing line made out of catgut. The reel is in excellent condition. It was kept out of the sun for probably the last 40 years. Just accumulated alot of dust. There are no cracks or scratches. I appreciate the information in the responses above. Thank you,
