My father gave me an old deep sea rod with a very old narrow style penn reel. The problem I have run into is how to bring back the color on the plastic side covers on the reel. It is suppose to be a burgundy reddish color. Does anyone know of how I can restore or bring back the color of the side covers without doing any damage or further distorting the covers? Thank you,

Scott, I use an exacto knife and just cut right under the epoxy and just slightly cut the the threads into just on one side all the way across on top of the guide foot and then it just peels off by hand. Just place new guides and wrap on rod in exact same spot and it will cover the bare spot that will be noticeable where you just removed the old guide foot and thread wrap.

Thanks for the information. I just completed a rod and it came out great. I placed a decal after the first coat with ultra fine glitter dried and then placed a 2nd coat to seal the decal. It came out great with not flaws. Capt. Marvin Engel (May your fishing always be catching)

When using ultra fine glitter in epoxy, will the glitter be sticking out on the surface after it dries? Will I need to apply a thin 2nd layer of epoxy to make sure no glitter protrudes out to the surface of final coat? Marvin Engel

I recently stained several of the cork handles on my clients rods that we use on fishing trips for Specks and Reds. They turned out great with a couple of coatings of Spar Urethane Clear Coat. I want to stain a cork handle and grip with the Sierra Red Stain but wanted to know if anyone has tried this dark of a stain on cork. Will it be too dark to notice the grain in the cork? I have used eve

Thanks for the information. I am using Minwax brand Golden Oak Stain. I completed the cork handles on one rod and it looks great. Marvin Engel

I stained the cork on one of my rods to experiment with. Do I need to put any type of clear coat varnish after the Golden Oak stain dries? I just don't want the stain to rub off on any of my clients hands or clothes while we are out fishing. If I need to put a clear coat of sealer or varnish what type should I use? Capt. Marvin Engel

I am wanting to add some new color and diamond wraps above the foregrip on my spinning rods to make them all identical. However I do not want to remove the old original thread and epoxy. If I wrap over the old work will it crack the new wrap work and new epoxy finish if I use this method? This is the only part of the entire rod I want to do using this method.
