One of the best tints I have used is the Alumi lite tint for their casting resins. It mixes well with epoxy.

TAP Plastics and Alumilite both sell a liquid dye or tint specifically for coloring epoxy resins. I have used Alumilite and it works very well.

I just came across this stuff. Somebody that knows more about epoxy than me should look at this product and see if it is applicabe to rod building. Their FAQ's say it is waterproof. Flexible and crack resistant. They say you can coat custom fishing lures with it.

13 fishing web site says Omen Black uses Alps guides. Photo of spinning guide looks like an Alps DY series. Casting guide looks like a MXN series. Suggest you contact Batson Enterprises since they distribute Alps. They will put you onto the right guide.

Frank,
If you are talking about a decorative butt wrap, I don't know of any other way to hold the wraps than masking tape. The method where you make a couple of turns of tape and then reverse the tape to sticky side up works well for me.

Harry,
I have the Harbor Freight 12" x 33 3/8" lathe. If you have room for a floor lathe this one got good reviews on several turning forums. I turn cork and eva grips on mine. I have turned quite a few ink pens and spindles with it as well. It has plenty of power and is a good buy when on sale and using a 25% coupon.

12. Re: Kayaks
Chris, let me tell you about kayaks. I never thought I would like one or be fishing from one. I have fished from high powered bass boat for many years. I am no youngster and have a bad knee. Last year my wife and I both bought kayaks that are designed for fishing and have had a blast. We can get into places that big boats cannot go and have seen things in nature that you would not see from

Roger,
Several years ago, I put a new transom in my boat. I bought all my epoxy, glass mat, tools and other supplies from them. They were very helpful and friendly during several phone conversations. Have not used the products related to any rod building activities but the transom is still attached to the boat.

Here a while back, I was looking at the videos on Flex Coats web site. Roger Seiders has one on installing tip tops. He extrudes their adhesive through a hot glue gun onto a table top in a thin line. After it cools it is peeled up and cut into short lenghts that just slide into the tip top. He then heats the tip under a flame and installs it. I never thought about the glue gun but it is a go

Being from Texas, I have seen a lot of All Star rods over the years that they were made in Houston. I have never seen one wrapped with orange thread. Lots of the older ones were wrapped with red and silver and blue and silver. I might suggest you take a photo or two and email them to Brett Crawford at Tour Star Grips. He was the owner of All Star when it was in Houston and can like

Check out this web site. . He makes all sorts of turning blanks with alumilite. There are several videos showing how he does it. Since I turn pens and build rods this is going to be my next adventure. Planning on casting some blanks for pens and reel seats. His worthless wood blanks are fantastic.

Don't know what you are attempting but have you considered a casting resin like some of the alumilite products? These come in clear, white and a tan color and are machinable. These can be cast using silicone molds or a hard mold made from plastic like a cutting board. They can be colored or tinted with dyes and metallic powders. this stuff has been used to cast turning blanks for reel seats a

They may have been Perfection brand guides. These were used on lots of vintage rods. If you post a photo someone will likely have some in their stash. I have some in my old stuff that you can have if they are the right size and style.

Howdy from Texas,
I have been looking at the Madeira polyneon color chart and trying to determine which of the yellows in the neon colors is the brightest. I want a really day glo yellow. Its hard to tell from the chart on the computer screen. The three likely numbers are 1823, 1935 or 1995. If some of you guys that use Madeira all the time could give some imput I would greatly appre

Maybe post some photos of the handle so we can see what the damage looks like. Seeing the damage is easier than trying to visualize it from a description. Someone will have suggestions to put the rod back into service.

Been thinking that expanding foam insulation in a spray can might work to make reel seat arbors or even foam cores for grips. If it will work this could make a few cores at a time. Anybody got an idea what the density of these products is? I have looked at several different brands but none indicate a density on the can.

Take a look at the Abu-Garcia spin cast reels. They make several different sizes. I have several of the older models that have the star drag system. They are smooth casting and strong reels. The new models have done away with the star drag and have a drag ring around the reel body. They appear to be a good reel also. My wife likes to use hers.

Matt,
That is the one...The bright colors showing up on rods recentally is an exciting new arena in my opion. One OEM in Texas has both
a hot pink and a hot green production rod in their catalog. I supect there are more to come.

I have some of the same problems when I sign my rods. Good advise for us less artistic types.
By the way, Matt, I just ran across a photo of one of your rods on another site. All I can say is
excellent...Would you be willing to share the color code for the paint on that blank?
