I have found out how hot the clear cast resin mixture is and it is HOT. I have tried to cover designs with epoxy to protect them and the clear cast eats right through the epoxy.
I want to build a reel seat with shark teeth and a matching fore grip. Is there an adhesive that will resist the clear cast resin?
Also, where would ya'll suggest as a source for a small amount of powder coat pa

Turning of center foam grips - What I did was drill out wood blocks the same diameter as my casting tube. (PVC) I allowed the foam to adhere to the wood and inserted a wood dowel AFTER it was cast. The dowel should extend all the way into the wood ends. When originally casting the form I used the standard metal shaft sprayed with release. You can then mark the wood pieces where you want the off

Thanks for the response. Can these paints be bought in small quantities? I would hate to end up with a quart.

6. Reel Paint
I have a couple of reels I would like to experiment with Custom coloring. I have seen the epoxy marbling at one of the expos which I guess is one option. I have also seen ads for painted reels. Does anyone know of a type or brand of paint that would hold up to the use a reel gets.

I am curious about the difference (if there is one) between a Spey Rod and a two handed fly rod (traditional casting with extra power). I have built my first Spey rod but am interested in more info (if any) on two handed fly rods that are not a Spey rod nor cast with a roll type cast and 50 - 70 feet of line out. All info will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rick

11. Spey Rod Blanks
Has anyone had experience with the spey rod blanks from The Anglers Roost? They are priced very inexpensive. They list it as a medium action mid flex blank. My limited study seems to indicate a fast action would be best. I am just wonder if this "inexpensive" translates into "cheap"? Your thoughts and opinions please!!!

Kevin,
Sorry top take so long to reply - Yes, I use a spatula out of the cup. I mix with the PacBay Mixer and immediately apply the juice. 5-6 minutes at best before start to finish.

I do have RodMaker Volume 9 #1 I have just reread it and I always let the finish sit with the guides up and remove the sage on the bottom.
I mix my epoxy in the (I forget the name) turning mixer thing for 3 - 5 minutes. I apply the epoxy with a spatula (bought from U-40 folks) at a Rod Show a few years back. I never experienced this problem until this year. I will try to apply a thinner coa

The large "O" ring on my lathe is breaking in only a few days. I used one for well over a year. Last year I order a spare, just in case, and when I put in on recently it only lasted 3 days. I then ordered two more and the first lasted maybe a week. I don't want to replace them weekly so is one source better than another. I use both the lathe part and the dryer part and I have been swit

I work in my garage which is probably my biggest problem since it is not temperature regulated. My epoxy will not level out no matter what I do. I have tried 3 brands and get the same results so I don't think it is the products fault. I am guessing I have a temperature problem. Early in the morning it is around 76 degrees in the shop but by the end of the day it gets to 90 degrees. Also, I have

I would like to know if one can use the Arc Shaped Boat Guides (ie. Fugi LRSG) and make a spiral wrap on a boat rod. It looks like the Arc might get in the way on the transition. Or should I just use a regular guide on the wrap?

I am going to build my first surf rod. It will be a 10' Lamiglas International blank . It is 2 piece medium heavy. I will be using 20# mono. Casting weight is 2-4 ounces. The spool measures 63.5 mm. As I understand the first guide will be 30mm. Does this seem correct? Will I need 11 guides plus tiptop? Any suggestions on the guides I should use.
Thanks for your help up front.

Thank you all for the info - Yes I wanted a little to go a longer way and also thinner would have been easier to paint on. I will just use the product as directed and plug along until the project is finished.
Thanks again

23. Thinning Epoxy
I need a few ideas on how to thin rod finish epoxy or rod building epoxy. I am not sure whether to use denatured alcohol or acetone. I want to thin the epoxy as much as I can without losing the bonding qualities. If you know of a formula or percentage you would be willing to share it would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to join some thin materials and need the epoxy to paint out a larger th

I am confused on how many stripping guides are recommended for a fly rod. In Tom's book he recommends an additional stripping guide 3 to 4 inches ahead of the butt stripping guide, but not included as part of the static test, and the same size as the second stripper. This creates three stripping guides. Am I correct in this assumption?
Also, on a nine foot rod one should start with 9 guides an

Besides buying every size fly guide there is how do I determine the best size for a specific fly line weight. Right now I am building a 7 wt saltwater 4 piece fly rod and am considering using recoil guides. Also can one use a spinning top for a fly rod and again how to chose a correct size top guide. Thanks for all your advice in advance.

Thanks for all the help. I finally used Capt. Neil's idea but used the cork tape instead of masking tape. I wrapped the tape around the blank very close to the point of application and marked where the beginning corner touched the tape as it was wrapped around the blank. The result was an almost perfect angle. Using rod bond I glued the ends as mentioned by Fred Schoenduby.
Thanks to everyone

A few years ago in RodMaker Magazine there was a mention about quick slip wing nuts for making a cork compression unit. Any help finding them would be appreciated. NOONE around here (Eastern NC) seems to know what I am talking about.

Thanks for the input. I seem to have the correct angle and the tape looks pretty good for a first attempt. However, the tiny ends don't seem to want to stay down and I am concerned that with use they will come lose. How should I secure them?
