Two Handed Fly Rods

I am curious about the difference (if there is one) between a Spey Rod and a two handed fly rod (traditional casting with extra power). I have built my first Spey rod but am interested in more info (if any) on two handed fly rods that are not a Spey rod nor cast with a roll type cast and 50 - 70 feet of line out. All info will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Rick

Are you calling a switch rod a "double handed rod"? A switch rod can be used as a overhead casting rod, may guys use them in the surf. The main difference is in the lengh and the line rating. Switch rods are almost always rated as "single handers".

There are many types and action for spey rods that lend themselves to different casting styles. Longbelly (traditional lines, typically full flex with a progrssive taper) scandi (under hand, typicly fast action and cast off the tip) casting, skagit (sustained water anchor, can be either but the progressive taper is normally prefered) and many hybrids of these. Each casting style lends itself to a different action and taper of the rod.

When you break it down a spey rod is no different from a normal fly rod, just longer and larger but that is all.

Spey is a casting style, not a rod type. Two-handed fly rods are just that: two-handed fly rods. Like single hand rods, they can be cast with any of the casting techniques: overhand, spey, skagit, scandi, etc. Certain techniques (ie. spey, skagit, and scandi) lend themselves to longer rods with a lower grip.
Likewise, an overhand cast with a 15 foot rod would be cumbersome and tiring.

Switch rods are more versatile and bridge the divide between the two. They are suitable for two-handed casting or single-hand, though they also have distinct disadvantages for both. Spend some time researching switch rods and I think you'll get the answers you are looking for.
