I am going to build an 8wt spey rod. It will be my first spey rod. Any suggestions on the smallest size guide I should use. Will be used mostly in saltwater.

Depends on the line and the connections you choose.

if you are using shooting heads go bigger to allow the loop to loop passage. On my spey I go no smaller than 5 but that is just me, I use mostly loop to loop shooting heads.

Look into Minama guides. Larger ID for the size.
