it's almost impossible in my opinion to get a good looking job on a rebuild like this without stripping the whole rod, especially when the old rod had underwraps. It's much easier to refinish the whole thing and the end result will look a lot better, and also be more durable.

I do a lot of trolling on Lake Champlain and other smaller lakes in Vermont for slamon and lakers. Most people here like an 8 foot or longer rod with a slow action that will bend all the way to the reel(like a big C). probably a composite blank would be best that is both strong and resilient. there is a lot of stress to the rod when it is loaded up in a downrigger release when the fish hits and t

A friend picked up an old salwater rod in Florida at a yard sale this winter and I discovered it was a hand made custom rod made for a Wayne Smith by Tony Pica, not sure of the spelling, as the names were hand written on the blank. It's a 9' boat rod with somekind of synthetic guideswhich are corroded beyond reuse. Does anyone have any knowlede of this rod maker?

If you want to try an air brush get one that handles a lot of volume of paint,I have tried it with my Iwata air brush I use on lures and it just runs out of paint to soon.

OK,so I have 3 bottles (1oz) of U-40 permagloss,One bottle was solid from top to bottom and the other one was very thick in consistency although I managed to use it. Do I dare open the third one? I know this stuff is good on a rod but I don't think I ever got a bottle that wasn't too old to use, what's up with this stuff and how can I get a new good bottle of PG?

I ran into the same problem with building custom golf clubs,,,,if you add up all the tools and equipment you need and then the extra materials you need ,just in case, then you have to agree that there just ain't no money in it.

well,a while ago I had a guy that wanted a camoflauge colored 8' boat rod for use on cod and haddock. I got some interesting feedback from this forum, one guy said not to clutter it up with too much camo, but no one got really specific how to color the blank,so here's what I did,I had some Krylon camo paint in spray cans so I let her have it with three colors done in large splotchy areas, then Iet

I made a lathe for turning eva foam grips as my homemade rod wrapper doesn't have enough power, I took an old electric drill apart and removed the motor and just left the gears and the chuck, this I use for only the free spinning chuck, the other end is a cheap electric corded drill (new) that I use for power,In between is 3/8 or 1/2 inch threaded rod with wahers and lock nuts strategically place

here's an easy way to measure epoxy from a squeeze bottle....I have done this for years and it works for me. I take bottle "A" and squeeze a line on a postcard size card(like the free ones you get inside almost all magazines)...then I take Bottle "B" and squeeze a line the same diameter and the same length as I just did with bottle "A". presto...2 equal lines of e

another way is to use golf club shafts,,cut the head and the grip off and grind the small end to remove the chrome finish, this will fit in a drill chuck nicely,I used 2 sided tape to adhere the sandpaper to the shaft, golf club shafts made of steel work best and they are cheap and they are already tapered,,,you can usually find old golf clubs at yard sales.I also build golf clubs.
