If you test cast with KW30 and KW30L as the stripper, I believe you will find one of them to be adequate.

You may find an answer in this thread. For example, in the tenth post Brian Babcock writes with Tremclad paint (Rustolium) and follows with heat to dry it. He then right away applies the finish.

Here on Long Island the GSB1321M has often been the first blank recommended to anyone who wants to plug fish the South shore ocean rocks and jetties. For a long time Lamiglas has been one of the few co’s that made one piece blanks in 11’ or greater. The GSB line has earned a reputation for enduring the high sticking and rock banking that is inevitable in places like Montauk. It can throw a wi

I am just a hack that occasionally oxy/acetylene welds to patch up my landscape equipment. However, I am proud of the rod winder I built around a discarded sewing machine found on the street. The rod supports are designed to fit 10' channel strut which makes a sturdy rail when it is screwed into the table. The rod supports are made from 1/4" squre bar and tube, and sheet metal. If thi

My Sears Dunlap Lathe is # 1 morse taper, as well. If you want to see if yours matches this you can find it on the Wood Lathe photo page of the "Vintage Machinery" website. Look up Sears Dunlop, model # 534.0601. Although I never tried it, you may find help there to find the needed parts. The Dunlop is all the lathe that is needed for rod building chores.

If you are on Mudhole's email list you will get notices for free shipping deals. The offer has been made at least twice a year, in my experience. They will ship blanks 9' and under no charge. There may be a minimum purchase amount, however. My 9' Lamiglas LSSUs and LGSBs were purchased this way. No tax or shipping . . . can't be beat for those of us who are retail buyers. That said, $20.0

I know the feeling Nate. Electrical tape works for me. When sliced down the middle of the roll with a razor it peels off in a thin, manageable width.

Steven, If you test cast with a 30mm and 25mm stripper guide, you may find one of them to be adequate. For myself, 30mm is the largest guide that is now used for my spinning rods 7' to 11'. There has been a lot of research recently which suggests the height of the stripper and its position in relation to the spool is more important than the diameter of its ring. You can read about that her

Frank, Are you using the whole sewing machine as the headstock for your rod lathe? If so, this may help. A sewing machine is what has been used as my head stock since starting this addictive hobby a few years ago. After finding a discarded sewing machine on the side of the road, it got working only after spraying some WD-40 all over the guts of the machine. It turned, however, sluggishly

Roger, I agree, 1/4 inch is a good diameter for a wrapping motor. It did not look sizable in the photo. Thanks for your response. Jim

Roger, All of your posts regarding DC set ups have interested me. It seems that after much experimentation you have evolved to this neat and efficient package. One obstacle to using motors found on the internet or on the side of the road is the transmission of power. Usually the output shaft is too short or too thin to attach a substantial pulley which is suitable to our needs. The one

Any extra sensitivity is good in this situation, as one wants to feel the bottom tics and make an immediate hook set on the bite. Otherwise, we ocean spin pluggers have not taken "sensitivity" as seriously as our sweet

This is the way I learned at the Riley Rods seminar during the 2011 ICRBE. Their website has more detailed instructions. The foam is poured into a mold around a 1/4" mandrel. A3/8" Flex Coat cork drill bit is used to open the center of the core to accept a 3/8" turning mandrel. You can learn how to modify a speed bore bit yourself from a RodMaker DVD or their magazine ar

Harry, Not sure of the nomenclature... fading, shading. Do you want to know how to do the shade/fade wraps for a decorative butt wrap, or the fade wraps for the guides? I have "Fade Wraps by Doc Ski" in PDF format if you are interested. This tutorial is on the guide wrap fading/shading.

I too have been charmed by the LDBs on surf rods. Right now there are some BLDBAG-6s taped as runners on my 9' back bay rod. BKWAGs are the reduction guides with a 25 mm stripper. After test casting, I know it is going to be a sweet rod. As the lure pulls line through the guides, it has a nice hum to it. I'll wait and see before putting these 6 mms on an ocean surf stick since threading a ne

Ryan White knows his stuff, especially when it comes to distance casting. In my estimation, you did not get the 3/4 - 3 oz. Sling Shot for distance casting, but for light plugging. It is not written in stone, but my understanding from reading about what some respectable builders who do build lowrider say, is that a lowrider setup performs optimally with fast action rods 11' and longer. My Century Sling Shot 1327 is built NGC with all Fuji K guides. I built it around an Emblem Pro 6000A. The stripper is 30 mm and the runners are 10 mm. The 10 mms allow the 125 # Tactical Anglers clip to pass through, so, it's not necessary to cut it off the leader when packing the reel. The 30 mm stripper is fine for braid. In test casting the 25 mm worked well too, but I wanted to leave s

Found my Dunlap Lathe a year ago on Craigeslist. It is a charming piece of machinery with its original paint and the original motor. It is listed in he 1941 Sears Catalog for $16.45. But it is built with solid cast parts and I was glad to pay many times that amount for it. It has all of the needed attributes to take on rod handle chores. The 44" bed is long enough to drill center holes

The polyneon comes in two sizes, # 40 and # 60. While # 40 is closest in size to A wrapping thread, I do not know what wrapping thread size will match closely with # 60, if at all. The PAS Store sells it over the internet.

Roger, Sorry, I assumed you were talking about spin casting. I could not cast anywhere near 90 yds with a conventional set up. I do believe we have the same blank, the HJ132SPH which is now called the Sling Shot 1327. It is becoming popular here in the Northeast with plug casters looking for a little more distance. Pluggers usually do not like to go above 11' here on LI, anyway. Afte
