Which of these three common materials do you prefer for your grips? (Or do you prefer another material altogether?) Do you prefer one over the other for a specific reason or purpose? Mix them up? What's your rationale? I'm using CF more often these days. However, my love-affair with cork has not gone away by any means. To be honest, I've never used EVA because I don't like the feel nor look

Before I explain the details of the situation, I’ll say I have done a little research and it seems the main answer is to pull everything off…the epoxy and thread. I’m looking for any possible options to try first before doing that. I put on a first coat of epoxy last night using ProKote original. Mixed well, a few bubbles but no big deal. I applied epoxy to all guides, then onto an inscription

Hey there guys, I'm in the market to build a XUL Spinning rod with a 6'6 1wt fly rod blank. I've been looking into spinning reel seats and can't seem to find one that is aesthetically pleasing... it seems like there is a hole in the market for nice looking spinning reel seats. That being said, it seems like a few japanese companies that are creating some really sleek looking reel seats, name

Hey, I'm a new poster here. I've been building for about 1 1/2 years now. I'm still experimenting with different grips, seats and guides. The build I'm working on now is a MHX blank with microwave guides. For the handle, I used Syncork and so far I really like it. Very light and the texture is nice and it was pretty fun to shape the handle. It's just that one more touch that makes it more p

The fun does't stop when fishing the Elliott S 7'3” ML-F blank . I fished this rod on a recent multi-specie day. I fished this rod with mono using a 1/8 ounce jig and 5 inch grub most of the time and I love the casting distance and the long sweep on hooksets. During low light periods the 7'3” ML doubled as a top water rod and man can this rod sling a Skitterpop a long ways! That extra distance is

The Elliott 7 foot all-purpose MF can be used as a casting rod or a spinning rod. Since the season began in Wisconsin I have been using this rod for many chores. I use a casting configuration fishing crankbaits and spinnerbaits. The blank excels at twitching plastics. And as of late I have been using this rod to catch bass with a 3 winged buzz bait! This blank is simply a perfect choice as a mul

Both my son and I have enjoyed fishing the Elliott SJ 610 ML XF extensively this season using it mostly as a jigging rod. I have caught fish ranging from less than a pound to pike over 40 inches. I can't say enough about this rod blank. It's got the speed, power and response that a fella needs from his main jigging stick. Built up with a 13” Syncork Tennesee handle and SeaGuide TIYGSLSG Titaniu

I would like to know on a casting rod, what is the lightest handle configuration, I'm mainly interested in the following handles. 1. Split Grips in Cork, EVA, Carbon Fiber, & Winn grips or combinations of these. 2. Full Handles in Cork, EVA, Carbon Fiber, & Winn Grips. If you know what each of these weigh that would be awesome, trying to make a decision and weighing all the optio

Syncork is a plastic material made in the USA. Syncork is lighter and denser than natural cork, while providing the ability, depending on how it’s shaped, to leave different surface textures, from silky smooth for a refined feel in hand to a rougher surface for a more comfortable and secure grip, even with wet, cold hands. It provides a range of finishing options that can’t be accomplished with o

What exactly is Syncork? Being advertised on Thorne Brothers ice rods and I don't want to spend $112.99 to get a look at the grip. "Stealth options-available on all panfish, perch and walleye blanks Featuring a 5" Syncork contoured handle with a recess for your reel foot that is not only comfortable but also 30% lighter than cork. " Thanks, Buzz "Fishermen are born

Hello everyone, I’d like some specific suggestions from people with experience building ice fishing gear on what would be a state of the art build in perch and panfish ice fishing gear. I’d like to build two rods for my niece who’s really into ice fishing with her dad. She’s a bit of a tomboy, so no frilly stuff, just pure function. Her goal in life is to be the host of a TV cooking sh

Does such a thing exist? I dont want to use EVA, not a huge fan of it. I much prefer the feel of Super Grade cork. I'm going to be doing a Pirate themed rod with black and white wraps and a custom painted Abu Revo Toro reel in black and white. I'm not sure how cork would look with this. So far the plan is to use Batsons Supergrade "High end" split grips. Suggestions?

Many of you know that I'm quite weight sensitive. All that cheesecake....:) Anyways, a while ago I searched for some lightweight burn cork or any cork that's darker than regular cork for accenting. Never did find anything less than double the weight of regular cork. Anyone know of the lightest weight burnt, speckled or brown color cork? The heaviest are the stuff that is rubberized

Last year I built a rod using composite cork for the complete grip. The owner wanted something other than regular cork to take the abuse of a rod holder. I used rodbond to glue the composite cork on. Last week the grip let go from the blank and now spins freely. I've buit a few hundred rods and this is the first time something like this has ever happened. I do not have the rod back yet, so I

Hello, I am thinking about building my first musky rod and have some questions about guide selection. I am thinking of using either a St Croix or Thorne Bros Predator blank. My question is what kind of guide material should I use. Are titanium framed guides that much lighter than say a chrome or SS guide? Is SIC or nanolite that much better than say an alconite? My goal is to build a ligh

I have just finished handles on the blanks for 3 very heavy action Muskie rods, using Syncork as handle material. I had not used Syncork before on a rod, but only for test purposes on a mandrel. T he client wanted Syncork on the handle due to the advertised toughness of this material. I spent some time withe the supplier, and one thing that they stressed was to build up these handles ONL

Anyone have any experience with this? Saw it advertised at a custom rod web site, it was offered in black. Is it different than EVA? I have to say, with cork costs, it would be nice to see more alternatives. Thanks, Marc

From my understanding Rod Bond may not be the best choice to glue up Syncork rings. I have been told that the best way is to glue them with 5 min epoxy to the blank and then shape them which is not an option in my case. If anyone has used this stuff, what have you done.

I have been getting alot of requests to convert full rear grips to split grips. I was using my rod lathe to finish the cork after cutting off the cork. Only thing is I think I messed up my motor on my rod lathe, in the middle of doing several rods, it started smoking. To finish them off I took the rod supports off my rod lathe and clamped them to my wood lathe and it worked ok. I was wondering if
