Does a rod need to be coated?

I am refinishing a 37+ year old fiberglass rod. In the process of trying to "clean up" the finish under the old guides, I ended up removing enough paint to expose the blank. The blank is so nice looking that I decided to remove all of old the paint. I want to maintain the look of the unfinished blank. Do I need to put any coating at all on the blank? Is there a coating that will promote a glossy look without adding a discernible amount of weight? Permagloss seems like a good choice, according to all the reading I've done, but I wonder what other options are available. Re: Does a rod need to be coated?

Any clear, gloss, exterior urethane would be a good choice for appearance and some measure of protection against moisture. PermaGloss is a very clear, water white coating that won't yellow on you. It's also terribly hard and long wearing. That's what makes it a good choice as a blank coating.

Nio, it doesn't. However, it doesn't hurt to put a coat of Gudebrod Rod Varnish on it, or Permagloss,

Permagloss. Hard to beat. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
