61. Clean up
I spend WAY too much time cleaning up the epoxy after I set the reel seat, insert, rear grip and butt on my bass rods. I must go through 50 q tips and paper towels. I have used straight alcohol, denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner. Even after 30 minutes of clean up it seems the epoxy leeches out and the next day I can see where the epoxy left a shiny ring around my reel seat. This is after

Hey guys, so im doing 2 rods.. Ive looked into finding the color, dupicolor and DuPont dont have what i need.. I went to the classic car restoration place, and hes going to give me an estimate on monday after he talks to his supplier.. He has to see the smallest amount he can get before he gives me an estimate.. The color is basically mexican pink.. (Trust me, it hurts me too.. But thats what the

Forum Members,
I am about to start my very first rod build project and I have been trolling the site for as much information as I can gather without taking up your time asking questions that have already been asked and answered. I have ordered two St Croix 5SW70MF for a pair of Inshore rods, one spinning and one Baitcasting mainly for speckled Trout. I want to go with the split handle grips and

About 3 years ago, 1 built 2 custom rods with 13" rear cork grips. Well the customer kept the rods in excellent condition and cleaned after each use. Now this year, after storing the rods in his boat, which was covered for the winter here in New Jersey, He found damage on both rear cork grips. Just to check my sanity, I have never heard or seen cork this new deteriorate after 2-3 years. The

I am fairly new to rod crafting and this is my first post/question. I have an old rod that I am doing a rebuild on that had eva grips, decided to remove and replace with some new Winn split grips. When I removed the old grips and reel seat I found an aluminum tube with a 0.650" diameter approx. 14" long. I can dress the exposed area from the butt to the rear grip and I ordered a custom

I'm sure this has been discussed many time over but I hoped someone could shed some light on sorting this out
Say I wanted to go with an Aluminum Spinning reel seat in 17mm (bigger hands) and wanted to match say a Winn Split grip or Carbon Fibre, theres some grips that are flush on the ends while others have a reduction shoulder, pretty confusing to say the least, and component retailers don't

Hello guys, first post here. Figured this would be the ideal place (hopefully) to ask about maybe buying a premade rod being it’s too close to season to be making my own rod now.
I’ve been using and ok with the St Croix 6’3” medium Eyecon and then last spring I was talked into buying which turned out to be a very big letdown/disappointed with a Dobyn 7’ Fury I purchased (terrible single foote

Conveniently enough, my mother of all people wants a rod for the creeks..
She said she wants me to use winn grips, the grips not the tape, so we can see how they play out.. What are the odds..
So the question is can you marble winn grips? Shes an artist and wants to play! Lol
We are going tk pick up marble magic from mudhole (I think thats what its called) can you marble winn grips? We

As the subject states.... Can anyone sell me on using these? Ive never built a rod with them.. Ive gone to a store and held a rod with them, i personally prefer cork... If anything, it seems other mediums allow for a significant advantage on customizability.. It seems with winn grips, it is what it is.. And im not a fan of hkw they litter thier logo all over the place.. Can you shape winn? What m

Looking for some info on the Fuji Perfect fit handle. Not sure where to mount the reel seat. My dilemma is the butt grip is 4.24" long and the rear grip is 3.5". As I think I understand, the distance the reel seat is supposed to be from the rear of the blank is somewhere in the neighborhood of 10.25 to 10.5 inches. Using a 7' blank there is not much exposed blank left between the grips.

72. Lew's blanks
West Marine here in NJ has a great fishing section that I just discovered last Saturday and while I was checking things out I came upon some Lew's rods with Winn grips. Very nicely made with Micro-Wave guides but, what I really liked was the blanks they are using. I didn't bother to look at the model number or other info I just remember how that blank felt. I was just wondering if anyone knew wha

Hi All, I am gathering parts information for a surf rod build and a problem popped up, the surf blank that I want to build is -MHX- SU1208F 10' 2pc has a butt of .776, all the reamers for the handle only go to .52 with the exception of the ultimate reamer which is way out of my catagorey. Wonder if Herb or any other surf rod builder has a solution to what they do, worst case scenario I can alway

Hello all,
I found a stash of blanks squirreled away in my Grandfather's stuff, and one of those blanks was a Seeker SU 100L 10 foot 2 piece rod. It seems that this blank is labeled as Medium Light 2-4 OZ 12-20 Surf Blank. I want to tie this into a beach rod for Surf Perch, and am looking for some advice on guide type, spacing and handle materialn It will be paired with an Akios 651 Shuttle conv

looking to build a few high end spinning rods (x ray blanks), and have settled on the aero comfort seats. Id like to use split grips and prefer the winn since i fish a lot of cold winter weather. Is there any of the winn grips that match up nicely to these seats? I have large hands, so i think id prefer the 17mm, but will use the 16mm if they fit better.
looks like these will line up pretty w

Hi everyone, thanks to your help I finished my bass rod and I'm trying to get my next rod figured out. I bought a phenix m1 inshore 7'11 ml blank (1-3 oz lure) that I plan on using for 1.8 oz jointed glide baits that I paint. I'm having difficulty finding split grips that fit with it, a lot of the split grips I see seem pretty short and small and meant more for bass rods. The butt section is a

Ive built a few conventional rod setups for bass fishing and have decided to give spiral wraps a go. Currently Im sitting in Afghanistan working so Im putting my wish list together. I've got a few Flipping Rods to build and have a few questions. First Rod the guy wants Micro Guides, the second rod he wants Standard Guides for Cold weather use.
Any suggestions on guide spacing for the difference in guide trains? I've thought about using the static test, but would you start / end at the same point ( length ) from reel.
Then I have a buddy wanting a Flipping / Pitching Rod

I was advised to use #8 running guides for a 9'6" steelhead spinning rod for fishing Erie and the Salmon river during colder months to prevent icing on the guides.
Is it possible to use the Fugi KR Concept for this build or should I consider something else like the cone-of-flight setup?
Thanks

Hi Everyone, new to the board as well as to rod building. I am looking to get started and was thinking of getting one of the Mudhole turnkey rod kits to get started. Anyone have any experience with these kits? I'm thinking of getting the 3 ice rod kit as the ice rods should be an easy project to get started and I can use them this winter! Also it seems it would get me started on all the tools I

Hello all,
I am looking for some recommendations on either a Lamiglas or NFC rod blank for steelhead. I fish the Clearwater, Snake, and Salmon river out of Lewiston Idaho. I fish mainly from the bank with bobber and jig or beads. I know I want a 10’ two piece rod. Just don’t know which one. As for the rest of the parts for the rod I’m all ears. This will be my second rod but I’m up for the cha

Hi all. I'm about to build a rod for throwing jerkbaits and lightweight topwater lures ,preferably
in the 3/8-1 oz size. This will be used in freshwater in the delta,San Luis reservoir, and the Sacramento
River in CA. Preferably in the 7 and a half foot range would be ideal. I don't want the rod to be
too heavy, maybe a fast action with a bit of tip? Just seeing what the experts have to say.

Couple questions regarding low profile reel seats and epoxy ramps. I have a couple builds coming up where I'm using a skeleton seat and also another rod with something like a Minima ultra light reel seat because the buyer wants it super sensitive. For the skeleton in the past I've ordered vinyl winding checks to fill for the inside because the two pieces butted up against a grip and a foregrip.
