Can anyone tell me how they store and ship one piece casting rods that are 7 feet long? I am looking at a number of options other than sections of PVC which I already have. For example, St. Croix offers cloth rod sacks that can accommodate spinning or casting rods and it looks like you can get aluminum tubes up to 84" long. Thanks

OK so I have built two 1.5 inch long arbors from drywall tape and will mount a Fuji 22 seat on them. The arbors are pretty thick because the blank dia. is pretty small. After making the arbors they seem very spongy and I can twist them around a bit with my fingers. So my question is will the epoxy penetrate the open pores of the tape enough to firm it all up? Or am I looking at a disaster from ar

The 20x thread below got me thinking a bit. So, here is what I did. I measured spool diameters for every spinning reel in the house. I had 7 models: Zebco Micro 00 UL (1.363") Quantum Catalyst PTiA 10 (1.489") Shimano Sahara 1500fa (1.576") Quantum Lite LT2 (1.648") Shimano Sahara 2500fa (1.696") Abu Garcia Cardinal 103 (1.828") This spans the range fro

Looking at some carbon graphite grips on your photo page I wonder if these have been proven by the test of time? When did they come on the scene and have there been many reported failures? Are they in widespread use? How heavy is the foam part in actual weight? Sorry for all the questions but want to make sure they are good for use before I dive in.

for a one piece 7' rod how quickly should the rotation from top to bottom should the spiral take place? currently the first guide is tapped on at 24" from the bottom with an 8" space between the other guides that wrap to the bottom of the rod. It looks nice but in terms of functionality I am guessing. I used the "search" function of this site but could not find any pertinen

Hi All, I did my wet layup on a graphite grip last and I used an epoxy that is marketed for use to builds surf boards. I am ready for my top coats now. I usually use the 321 from Riley Rods but I don't have enough left at the moment. May I ask what type of epoxy you guys are using for your top coats? Should I be concerned about using a different type of epoxy over the one I used for my wet

A long grip below the reel seat is great for long casts off the beach but that long butt section is awkward and inefficient to fight a big fish from the beach. Does anyone make a long detachable butt extension for a surf rod which can be removed and covers a shorter gimbal butt to fight fish?

The more and more I get to learn different blanks, the more I realize how much variance the action plays in to describing a rod. I have found some big descrepencies between what one manufacturer calls a fast/moderate/slow action and the next. One companies moderate is another companies slow. Even within the same lineup some rods can be worlds apart from mod. fast to moderate. I understand that th

I am currently building a medium heavy saltwater surf rod. Are there any real issues with zirconia ring guides for this type of build? Recently, I have come across some online references that specifically advise against using zirconia ring guides for saltwater applications. Any truth to those statements?

Fuji introduced an expanded selection of high-frame small-ring KL guides at ICAST that not only completes the selection, it expands the possibilities for many more applications. The KB "Belly Guide" is also now available in sizes up to 6 mm which opens up a world of options on all sorts of rods. Here is a press release for those interested: Fuji’s expanded KL selection for the

I need some guidance on guide sizing/selection for a 9', 9wt fly rod I'm building for stripers/blues. I asked the blank supplier for recommendations on guide sizes and he merely copied the Sage guide selection available on-line. In the case of Sage, they suggest 16,12, 4, 3, 2,2,2,1,1,1 for their 990 TCX. I thought the 2 and 1 a bit small for my application as I will be using 10wt intermediate li

I have noticed that most of the older surf or larger bank rods have an aluminum tube under the entire handle assembly. Why was this done ???? On another note I am building a 8 foot rod for bank fishing and am adding carbon fiber handles. Would the aluminum tube help keep the multip pieces from flexing. My worry is that in the event you hang into something large that the flex of the base of t

Thanks to all of the 25 guys who showed up Saturday morning/afternoon for this event, I hope you all had a good time and learned a little bit in the process. I had a great time shagging flies for a couple of hours, lol. Good selection of food, lots of blanks and rods to pull on, and good company, gorgeous weather – couldn’t have asked for a better day. Billy V. introduced me to the TLDBSG guides years ago and I have been using them for micro guide surf rods ever since. It is great to see major vendors now carrying the series and Fuji adding the KR series guides with high frames and small rings, but...we still have the same problem: Unless you are building a rod with a tube of 6.5 or smaller, you will not find a matching top. Most surf rods have

Aloha, Does anyone know where I can get my hands on some 34 mm reel seats? I have the Fuji plate style reel seats I was considering using, but would like to see if there are any larger traditional reel seats before I continue these builds. They are sabers from the 80's I have a 32mm seat I tried and I'd have to ream out the inside a bit to make it fit, but then there's o room for the adhesive.

I used my first built surf rod last week in the Outer Banks. It was a kit with a LSBT1202M Lamiglass 10 ft blank to which I added a Stradic 6000 spinning with 14 lb line. Second day there I landed a 41 in and 30 in red drum from the surf and later a 5 ft ray after a 35 min fight. The rod held up great and it is really casts better than any of my commercial ones like Tica, Shakespear, and Penn

What are your thoughts on the new K series? Got a couple surf rod builds and can't decide between the K series and the YAG. I was wondering mostly about tangles. Any input would help.

My first new concept spinning rod build and I have a few questions. It's an 8 ft. pier/surf rod and the spool face of the reel measures 52mm. If I read the library article correctly and done my math hasn't failed me, that puts my choker guide at around 55 in. That leaves me with 22 in. of rod after the choker. Is that ok? I mean I know it's kinda of a rough guess and I should static and test cas

Let's say you're going to build a trolling rod that's dedicated to trolling Mann Stretch lures (these things can be murder on striped bass in the Northeast in the fall). You might occasionally use the rod to drag something else, like an umbrella rig, but in terms of performance, you want to optimize it for pulling Mann's Stretch lures, and if it suffers on the rare occasions that you'll use it fo

Hello, Rod is for the So Cal surf when it's too windy to throw a FLY... I'm building a 9' ultra lite 4-6Lb spinning rod. The blank was made for steelhead and it is very parobolic. Question: What type of guides would you use Fuji concept, K series, American, Batson, Pac bays, Mircos?? One concern is the bend does go into the split handle. Clearance from the reel to the first guide may b

Am looking to build a few carp rods for myself "method" fishing. Looking at factory rods, I have never seen such one sided thinking in any type of rod builds/fishing. For those that have not seen carp rod factory builds, it really takes a looking to see what I mean. Typical builds have 6 guides on 13' rods and 6 also on 12' rods 2.5-3.5lb "test curve" rods. Usual sizes go

Looking for some ideas on a 14' two piece blank. This rod will be built for pulling Magnum Dipsy Divers with ss wire. Needs to be fast action, 30-40# line rating. Trying to keep the blank price around $100-$150, I know, I laughed too.

I just finished a rod which I used HBSG guides, wrapped with size D thread, and finished with Aftcote & TM. First time it was flexed, teh epoxy cracked on a couple of guides, which isn't out of the ordinary with heavy guides on longer blanks that bend a bit. What is strange, is a couple of the guides "squeak" each time the rod is flexed, or even when teh rod is shaken. Sounds like s
