I could use some advice on reel seat placement for maximum casting distance. I am building my second surf rod, a 12' 8" CCP, conventional set up, with a Fuji DPSM 22 mm seat, Kw guides, 25 0r 20, 16, 12, 10, two 8s, and a 8 or 10 ring tip. Some say to measure from the arm pit extending the arm down the blank to the thumb resting point. Others recommend placing the butt in the center of the c

Wondering about durability of winn grips. I am not a real fan of the looks or the feel. But they would fill a need for one of my builds. First option I have not been able to get ahold of. Anyways I have had some bad experiences with rubber tool grips recoil pads of guns etc. makes me a bit leery of going rubber type grip on a fishing rod. Rod will be a limited use UL. But it may spend a fair amou

Newbie here, looking for some help. I have taken up rod building as something to do in the winter months. I have a 7' inshore kit put together, but not yet epoxied. Reading the great advice on here, I now realize I need to re-layout my guides. So glad I've found some good basic (and advanced) advice here before I get too far, because I am already imagining all the specs and puppy drum I am go

So...after having not shipped a surf rod in a long time I am attempting to ship a 8'10" Thrasher 8106 from Birmingham, AL to Camden, NC. The tube is 110" in length packed. I am shocked at the current shipping prices. I have historically shipped rods like this from my local post office, but they are no longer accepting - at any price - items over 8' in length. UPS is quoting $185

1. Has anyone built/fished the 10’ Surf Machine? I just looked at the blank at Surfland, but it feels a little too stiff for pencil work — can anyone confirm/refute that? 2. I also looked at a 10’ S1 Stealth (1205). This looked excellent for pencil work. It is rated 1-4 oz...that upper number seems high for the way it felt. Is it still “sweet” at 2.5 oz? Lastly, I looked at the 10.5’ Sl

All, I'm looking for a 10-11 foot blank to make a surf Perch Rod. I have a few already, but am obsessed and want to build one for myself. It needs to be able to cast 2-3 ounces, be fairly light weight (upper body was crushed badly and shoulders/neck are in rough shape). I generally fish flat beaches and need to cast fairly far. I preemptively purchased an NFC SA 1064 as it was 60% off and could

Out of curiosity, what would you name as the most significant innovation in rod building components and the most significant innovation in rod building techniques in the last 10 years or so?

Will be spinning with 4500 Penn Spinfisher. I normally use the KL-H guides but I want a little more durability. Line will be 20-30lb braid. What train would you use for the KW guides?

Im thinking of attempting my first surf rod build over the winter. I would like to possibly use a different type of grip such as the wraps for the fore grip and rear grip. I think I saw that Wynn has grips via mudhole for this. Would using the microwave guides a good option for the surf? Looking to make the lightest possible build. Thinking about a 2 piece 10' MH mhx blank. Anything I

For "perfect" guide placement cement the grip and reelseat to the blank, attach a reel with line to the blank, and clamp the rod securely at a 45 degree upward angle. Put on a tip-top. Use tape to secure it. Run your line from the reel through the tip-top and tie enough weight to the end of the line so the rod is deflected 90 degrees. Trace the curve of the blank on a piece of drywall,

I see that when I look at various production rod manufacturers that most of them are no longer carrying rods that use the very small guides. Have you folks as builders found the same thing with the requests for guides from your clients? I know that for myself, my clients are telling me the same thing. They say that although the rods with the micro guides work really well - they want thei

I stopped by the Bass Pro Shop in Atlantic City last night to pick up a light for my one boat, and as I walked through the fishing section I spotted a rod/reel combo that had Cabela's / Bass Pro's version of the KR Concept. The rod was a Fish Eagle spinning rod (I take it that it is their house brand) and it had a guide train and micros that mimicked the KR Concept. It looks like even the mass

Hi All, i'm just getting into rod building, I built 2 trout flyrods back in the 1950s when I lived near the beaverkill and katykill rivers but now I live in Florida (Tampa Bay area) and I'm thinking of surf fishing (no boat). I would like to read all I can about surfrods I'm sure they are different than a trout rod and wonder if any one would could set me onto a web tutorial or good book to buy t

I’ve read a lot about rods being balanced, but I have never found any advice on the best way to achieve it. From the videos I have seen they say for the greatest angler comfort the rod should balance near the reel. When laying out your handle assembly how is the best way to achieve this if you aren’t certain what reel will be on the rod?

Folks, I recently built an 11' surf rod and did not use underwraps and a fellow building said I was brave for not using underwraps. What are your thoughts on using underwraps for surf builds? I have more surf rods to build for my self and would like you opinions. Will be using either Single Foot or Double foot guides on the rods. Probably doubles on the rod rate 2-5 oz and singles on t

The trouble with reading through the forums on this topic is that no proper solid explanation is given as to what ''spine'' we are talking about Please let's sort out what it is we are actually discussing! Let's talk about a standard tip section from a freshly cut blank, as on these sections the spine is very apparent as opposed to the thicker butt section where not only is the spine harder

Have a blank I was thinking about building up as a gift. I'm land based so all my builds are 9-11 foot surf rods, never built a boat rod so I have a couple questions. The blank is a CTS (BS705 ) 7'0" 30-45lb : 2-6oz that I was told would make a great small tuna or large striper rod. Looking for some reference points to get me started.... Reel seat placement, was thinking 10-12 inches.

I am confused. Attempting to re- build a (admittedly short) 9ft 4in surf spinning rod from a 1950’s FG Conolon, I am perplexed with the status quoi guide spacing typically and presently used with surf rods compared with most any other rods. It seems 2 or 3 fewer guides as per what I have learned about typical static testing for my 9ft rod would be the norm for this surf rod. Is a surf rod all

Hello all, I am new to this forum. I have built one rod and it turned out nicely, to my surprise. I live on the coast in St.Augustine Fla, and surf fishing and freshwater bass are my quarry. This topic involves surf fishing. I mainly fish for one species, the pompano. They are illusive, really fun to catch and learning where they are in the surf is a big challenge. We like to use rods at least 11

And a glorious, good day to all. I am pondering of stepping out of my (Fuji) comfort zone and livin’ on the wild side by using Minimas to compliment a vintage FG Conolon UL trout rod. Unlike Angler’s Resource’s awesome job of listing ALL Fuji guide heights, I am having difficulty locating similar spec sheets for PacBay products. I only found a few on their site. It would be a lot easier to order

Since reel specifications are normally considered when configuring and building spinning rods, it seems reasonable to rethink, or perhaps question the choice of reel if braided line will be used. It’s kind of a “chicken/egg” issue. With the trend toward the use of braided lines (with or without leaders), smaller reels are often a better choice. The larger reels incorporating bigger spool diameter

I'm new to rod building and want to build a few surf rods. I'm fairly certain I want to use Fuji KW & KL & KTs. I was wondering if you folks buys the guides as you need them for a specific rod or buy a bunch to have on hand for future builds. I will only be building rods for myself so I don't want to amass a huge supply / inventory of guides. Does it make sense to buy extra guides

I've recently took an interest in carp fishing and was thinking about building a couple of rods. I watched some rod reviews on-line and noticed they spoke about butt guides which were size 50 and size 16 tip-tops. Also, there were relatively few guides compared to how rods of similar length are built in North America. Does anyone know the rationale behind this style of guide system?

Hey guys so I have been doing some reading, and I need some help understanding this. So far most of my builds I have been balancing the rod. I do this by leaving the butt grip off the rod until everything else has been done. The very last thing I do is take a bolt and thread some nuts onto it. I add or remove the nuts until the rod is balanced right at the end of the reel seat on the side closest
