several years ago Bass Pro was big on glitter in their rod wraps, I got a lot of repairs in on their rods and in order to match the eyes I went to the craft store and bought glitter pens. These are squeeze tubes with glitter and a clear gel glue mixed. I put the glitter directly on the wraps and when it had dried overnight I epoxied my wraps over them. Worked then , and still use it for some fanc

Thank you Art, you can put it much better than me. I'll also stand in line for any of them in decent shape for $25.00 as I can guarantee what you say about finding any for that price on E Bay.

Aaron, Don't know if I can help but am willing to try. There are two values when it comes to these rods, first there is the book value and as you know there is the sentimental value. There is almost no limit to the sentimental value. However it is nice to know the practical value on an item such as this.
That said, I can't ID the rod without furthur information. Look careful for any logo o

You might also check out Jann's NetCraft , another one of our sponsers on the left. I have built several crappie rods for kids using their fiberglass spinning rod blanks, very good blank for about 6-7 dollars.

Chad,
In this area of the country (N. Mississippi) we use a lot of crappie jigging rods. To get the length, toughness and price you want go with a B & M or Bucks crappie rod. You can pick one up at any Wal mart or order them from Bass Pro or Cabelas. Strip them down and rebuild in the style you describe. I have tried to buy blanks direct from B&M In West Point Ms. but they can only

Just went to Lowes and had to choose between a Delta an a GM brand. Bought the GM on sale for 68 bucks. It is a nine inch bench top model with a lazer line guide. I'm very happy for the use I'm putting it to.

Issac,
I don't know where you are located but I agree with Steve. Here in Mississippi you might be reguired to pull a hawg out of cover but a lot of the bass fishing is on open water also. I favor a 6 or 7 wt. for most of my bass fishing. There is another route you may want to think about. As Steve says durability is more important in this type of fishing than weight. I have rebuilt several

I like the thinness of the water slide but had a bad experience, I had some that got a year old and started to disenigrate into pieces when I went to apply them. I have gone to stick ons and now I have had no more problems.

I have let my subscription expire (I'm correcting that) so I will have to read the article as soon as I catch up on my back issues. Meanwhile, let me make a few comments on what I have read here.
I agree that where you are located makes a big difference. I do a lot of local business here in north Mississippi, but I also travel to Mn,Wi and Iowa every year and I have a son in N. GA. and do so

I started building rods in Gainsville Fla. in the mid 70;s. There was a small rodbuilding shop in one of the malls and they offered lessons and compnents. Basic diamonds and chevrons were well established on most of the saltwater rods. We started to do fancy butt wraps on some of our fresh water bass rods and even a couple of our fly rods. fly fishing in salt water was a real radical thing and so

I did a muskie rod for a customer up your way and used an almost idetical set up to what you described. I used alternating rings of maple and walnut for the grip and foregrip. The customer loves it.

I'm not sure I understand why you are having a problem with bubbles. I have use LS supreme since it came on the market, I zap my resin for 10 seconds in the microwave & mix in a dixie cup using a tongue depressor. I apply using the spatula method( Q tip stick) and have never had a problem. There are bubbles in the cup but they disapear upon applying it to the rod. I never apply heat maybe tha

Dick,
Please do not give up on this site, I am almost your age and learned this craft almost 30 years ago. There was no web site and only a couple of books to learn with. The materials and supplies were few and far between and the types and quality of materials were even more so. I was lucky because a good rod builder took me under his wing and got me off to a good start. This site does the

Jeff,
I have done a similar rod using a B & M 12 ft. 2 piece crappie rod. Since you already have the rod and do not want to spend a whole lot, I would suggest a good set of eyes. Get the lightest you can get away with, single foot and use the forhan lock in wrapping them. I would also suggest a cork grip maybe with sliding rings( see Jann's NetCraft ). It will get you the rod you want

468. Re: Heating guides
Why do you want to heat the guide when you can heat the end of the glue stick in an alcohol lamp and briefly touch the guide foot to the stick and press the eye on the rod with finger pressure for a few seconds and it will set up fine. You can remove any excess glue with your finger nail before it sets up too much. If you didn't move fast enough and the glue sets up too much before you press

Dave,
I live only 15 mi. from West Point where the B&M plant is located. I have seen hundreds of the rod you describe. They are used for crappie and bream(sunfish to you), Buddy has the correct method of use. Lots of people here use them with jigs to fish the stumps and brush piles.
I have repaired a few and even put a reel seat and eyes on one. It made a great rod for 1/16 th oz

472. Re: Slow action 7wt?
Brian,
Have you cosidered a fiberglass rod. They will give you the action you want and have pleny of backbone for about any fish you connect with in the canals, plus they ar a lot tougher on gators. I have been doing rebuilds on several of the old bass rods, picked up at yard sales or on @#$%&. Its not too hard or expensive to pick up a 7 wt.

474. Re: Hexagraph rod ??
Dale,
I have built 2 rods out of hexagraph, both of them several years ago before common cents. I like them a lot. One is a 9'6" 7/8 wt and the other is a 5' 5 wt. You have to like the soft action of bamboo in order to appreciate them as this is the action they were originally designed to imitate. I have found them to be extremely durable. The 9'6" rod has acounted for a 20 lb car

Andy,
You're going to have to cut off the cork with a blade, proceed carfully. The reel seat should come off with heat. Use a paint stipping gun and again proceed carefully.
First you should consider if you should remove it or not, if it is a rod that is in fair shape and has trademarks visable you could lose any value by changing anything from original. You should get a good book on

Tom,
Check Jann's Netcraft catalog. They publish a formula to figure the diameter of a rod about 10 inches up, all you need is the butt measurement. Dont' know how accurate it is but I bet a call to their customer support woud get you the anser.

Thanks Jeff,
I'm doing a sort of restoration rebuilding job using the mid section and tip section of an old rod. I'm using the old ferrule for a detachable handle. The problem is I have a reel seat I want to use that is gold and I planned to use gold eyes and tip. Thought I would to match the ferrules by changing from silver to gold or brass or maybe black. Appreciate the help.

Reading the posts on this reminds me of how far we have come on the custom rod business as far as supplies are concerned. I built my first rod about the time time Elvis left us. We had fiberglass for blanks and stainless steel for eyes. Fenwick was one of the few suppliers I had acess to. About the 3 rd rod I built I decided to get radical and try a new material called graphite. I decided to buil
