Ken, If I understand your post, you are not a builder and want to know what it woud take to build this rod? The price of building any rod would consist of the cost of the compnents and the skill and labor of the builder. If you do not take the plunge yourself you can check the directory at the top of this site and click on your area to find a builder. I am located one state south of you and

Just finished a fly/spin combo similar in configuration to Ray's. This one is a bamboo with a reversable handle. I had an unknown 2 piece bamboo blank from an old rod taken on a deal for another bamboo rod. The mid section and tip section seemed unsuitable for an ultra light fly rod and only had one tip section, It ocurred to me that I could do a combo rod as it has a little more backbone in the

I have been a big fan of Rod Bond since I first used it, however I have found a lot of uses for it besides rod building. I have used it for various household repairs including patching rubber boots. My newest endeaver, just completed, is patching shot holes in this years casualties of duck season , 4 decoys. Just curious to hear of any other innovative uses of Rod Bond.

Jason, Take a look at Jann's Netcraft on the left and check out their ultra light spinning blanks. I built one on their 6 ft. blank and it throws a 5 wt line great. Their 5 1/2 ft is similar but a little stiffer, but it might work.

I use applicator sticks, the same size as the stick on a Q tip, I drop my finish on with it as the rod turns about 4 RPMs. The round shape is used to smooth and spread the finish as it turns and is the right size and shape to give me a nice smooth end to my wraps at the end of the threads. You simply hold the stick to the end of the wrap as it turns. Hope this is clear enough for all to understan

Thanks, seems like the spey rod blank is the way to go. I agree Bill but you know the story, customer swears he doesn't do things like that. However if he is willing to pay the price then who am I to argue. By the way I've seen crapppie referred to as crappy, white perch, speckled perch and you probably know the Cajun name for them that I cannot pronounce. At any rate same fish and some good eati

Need advice, I have a customer that wants a 10-11 ft. crappie rod. It can be graphite, fiberglas or composition but it must have the backbone to lift a 2 lb. crappie sraight up out of the brush and tree roots. On the same hand hand it must have a senstive tip to drop jigs straight down into the holes. He does not want the B&M poles imported locally as he says he keeps breaking them? Thanks.

Tape can be removed with WD-40, but be sure to clean it off with soap and water prior to doing any thing else with the blank.

Iv'e tried it on a couple of rods, does a quick touch up but does not wear as well as perma gloss.

Don't know how old some of the cedar I use is but I have used quite a lot of red cedar. It's easy to use but extremely brittle. I use perma gloss over it to preserve it, it is a bit soft but with a good water proof finish it has held up well.

bILL, Try Cabela's soft gun protective slip on sleeves, they will stretch and fit about any rod you need depending on length.

I will attempt to describe my system of application, I use an applicator stick about the diameter of a Q tip and drip the LS Supreme on the rod as it is turning (3-6 RPM). I work up the rod and coax the finish gently by working the stick back and forth over small sections of 1-2 inches at a time. I make sure the finish covers all arond the rod and there is no blank spaces then I work the next 1or

I too am not surprised, Tom is right , that is probably the typical builder. I also had a similar experience, I was lucky when I started to build rods I was taught by a good builder who had a shop in a mall in Gainesville Fla. You could buy his supplies and he would guide you through the building process. Unfortunately he was a student at the U of Fla. and soon moved on. I also moved on and

Joe, Don't know what you want to spend on a blank but check out hexagraph rods, they make a real beauty of a 2 piece 7 ft 5 wt fast action blank.

Bill, I,ll have to agree with Ray. My experience here has been in heavy cover for bass. By heavy cover I,m talking logs and stumps and stick ups from old flooded timber. Most bass fishermen in this area will use 30 to 40 lb braided lineto handle bass from 2 to 15 lbs. The abrasion factor must be taken into consideration without losing sensitivity. Most of my own fishing is with 3/8 to 5/8 j

Just to add my 2 cents worth to this, my rod for this job is a 7 tp 7 1/2 ft medium heavy, 10 to 17 lb class, fast action rod. It will do the job in this area. I use an exposed blank reel seat for sensitivity. I have use several different blanks for the job but all have fit this criteria and all have been satisfactory for this area. The area the customer is fishing will very much determine the r

I have used commercial food coloring to add a translucent color to wraps, gives a nice effect to a bass rod. It can give a real subtle effect depending what your wrap colors are.

I have built several spinning rods using all metal reel seats in different colors including gold. I used a fly reel seat but be sure that the feet of your spinning rod will fit before you try this. You may have to go to a salt water fly seat if the spinning reel is too big. The sponsers at the left can supply you with a variey of seats. I think you will be happy with your results.

Steve, I have not used tiger eye in a casting blank so I can't advise you on it but I have had good luck using Mudhole's special spinning blanks and building medium wt casting rods on them. The price is very good on them and they come in blue and matte colors. I assume you know what your friend wants for hardware and grips. I like to build that blank with a 9 inch grip and the exposed blan

Still laughing over the cat. Glad to hear I'm not the only one to have trouble, half of my shirts have epoxy from leaning over to get something from the shelf above my rod dryer. Most of my blue jeans have epoxy patches from mixing and being a clutz. The invention of Rod Bond has been a great boon. My work bench is half fiberglass rosin and the other half true oil finished. The wood floor on my s

Billy, I submitted an invoice to the Co. for my labor and materials along with the pictures of the rod and tube. If I hadn't I would probably got the cost of a blank and nothing else back. I consider myself lucky to have gotten anything back.

I agree, never ship without insurance even if it is a hassle to collect. I recently had the PO's chief competitor completely bend in half a rod shipped in an aluminum tube, inside a heavy cardboard tube. I had it insured and also had pictures of the bamboo rod and aluminum tube. It took about 5 weeks and 4 trips to my local shipping center to collect my loss, but to their credit they did come thr

Neil, I only live about 10 mi. from the B&M crappie pole warehouse. I have tried to get blanks from them but they they have all their rods made overseas and shipped to West Point Ms. What I'm getting to is that it is cheaper to get one of their rods in 10-16 ft. lengths and strip it of the hardware and handle and rebuild it. These will hold up better as you and Bill both know what some

interesting topic, but I will have to agree with Cliff. Time is a relative thing depending on your age, experience, expertise and why you are building rods to begin with. For instance when I started out doing this I was only interested in building a few rods for myself. Then as I got hooked I built a few for friends. Later I used it as a second income and hobby but still had a full time job. Fina

Jeffrey, Save your money, you're getting good advice here from all the posts. I started wrapping with 2X4 blocks, notched and lined with velvet , bought in a craft store, that was 30 yrs. ago, I used this same set up until a few yrs. ago. I finally have a power wrapper it is a fine piece of equipment but you will not save a lot of time, only slightly more convenient. You need to learn rod
