Lynn & Michael, Yes, it was ProWrap metallic blue that turned a light purple in just over a year, (just on the side facing the sun when it's on the deck of my boat). The rod is an 8' St Croix SCIV flipping stick that looked out standing until it faded. I rewrapped it with dark blue color fast thread and it seems to be holding up much better.

Michael, I love the dark blue on the ETC II blanks; but blue fade worst than any other color.

David, 10 guides perhaps would not be too many depending on the action/power of a 7' rod. I would recommend you read the the article in the library on "Static Loading" of a blank. It will show you where and how many guides a blank needs to perform the best. I use elastic thread from Walmart to temporarily wrap on the number of guides and where i think they will need to be. Some gu

Mark, An alternative to the dental bands... I use elastic thread to hold on micro guides in place while static loading. It is available at "Wally World" or any fabric shop. That way if I need to add another guide, it is simply to tie another on without removing any of the other guides. Four or five wraps is all that is necessary to hold the guides. They slide easily when static lo

Brody, To get a glass like finish don't put your rod on a drying machine. Turn the rod 180 degrees every 3 - 5 minutes and remove the drips from the bottom of the rod. Make sure you turn it exactly 180 degrees. You can increase the time of the rotate after say 30 - 40 minutes. After an hour, if temperature is in the 70 degree range, then out it on a dying machine. That way you have removed th

Mark, I build mostly bass rods and my business started as many have mentioned above. I built several rods for myself, loaned one to a friend in a bass tournament and he asked me to build one for him, which I did. He bragged about the rod to others in our bass club and things started to get busy for my rod building. I decided to start an "official" business. Paid over $3k for a websit

I guess that depends how you've set of your business. I have a DBA and show the rod building income along with my personal income on my tax return for each year. As you're aware the rod building income is shown on a quarter basis for the rod sales occurring during the reporting quarter. I believe you wife is correct.

Tucker, IMHO the Rainshadow Immortal is an outstanding blank for your application. I have built D/S rod on NFC, St. Croix, Mudhole and Phoenix blanks and all of my customers rave about the Rainshadow Immortal IMMS610MXF. Plus Batson has recently reduce the sale price of the Immortal Series of blanks. Give Carol a call at Upmosts, they're great people!

Rick, Mudhole has a link to a web page that gives the blank diameter, (for all of their blanks), every 2" from the butt of the rod blank to 24", (as I recall), up from the butt. This takes the guess work out of selecting a reel seat I.D. and also winding checks. Just go to their website and select the balnk you are building. Once you're on that webpage you will see at the bottom of t

Scott, When I first started my business building custom rods, (I guess I am what is called a "Hobby Builder"), I asked a component distributor how to price a rod. His reply was "everyone uses a different method to determine their sale price; but if you aren't making a $100 per rod you won't be in business a year from now". I take a lot of pride in what I build and will not

Chris, I imagine Mike Riley's guiding business has generated a better return on his time investment than his carbon fiber grip business. I hate to see our industry lose his contribution, as he did a beautiful job on his carbon fiber grips. I had him build me one for an Rainshadow Eternity 2 a year or so ago and it fit the reel seat perfectly, 'was absolutely beautiful and best of all my custo

Lan, I would second the recommendation of purchasing one of Mudhole's rod building kits. I have built several of their kits for clients that specifically requested one and was very impressed with the ease of construction and the quality of their kits. As also mentioned above, Mudhole has on their web site a PDF File that can be down loaded with guide spacing for all of the rod building kits.

Trace, If you buy a bottle of Perma Gloss pour out only what you are going to use, (a small amount as it goes a long way), then keep the bottle in the refrigerator. I have had a bottle for over a year and a half and it is still great. As far as using it entirety on the wraps it will build up a thick coat, (I've used 7 -8 coats), but it won't be a glossy as epoxy. Like mentioned about it is

Jon, One other word of caution....If you epoxy the arbors into the reel seat bodies and then ream them out with the reamer installed in a drill motor go slow with the drill motor. The heat generated by the reamer will soften up the epoxy between the arbors and the reel seat bodies. I found this out the hard way, which are the lessons you don't forget!
