Jason, Here is Mudhole's Guide Spacing recommendations: MB843-MHX 3 1/8 6 15/16 11 7/16 16 13/16 23 3/8 31 1/8 40 1/2 51 3/4. Their Guide Spacing recommendation chart is available in PDF format on their web site. The MB843 is a great blank. I use it we all kinds of baits. A good all around blank that you'll enjoy.

Thomas, I also use Fuji aconite micro guides and 'have had several clients bring their rod back for tip top replacement after the ring popped out. I told them to stop winding their tungsten bullet weights right up against the tip top on TX rigs, as it impacts the ring and eventually will break it or pop it out. A rod building buddy of mine swears by AMT ring lock guides for durability. I h

Ron, From what I've read, a normal rule of thumb for the number of micro guides on a rod is 1.5 times the length of the rod in feet, (rather than the rod length in feet plus one for standard guides). For a 7 1/2' rod this equates to 11.25 guides, so your 11 guide count seems to be right in the ball park. I have found this is a good starting place, but I always static load the blank to confir

Stephen, Like Tom indicates CP or artists fixative can be used to cover the decals and seat the edges to prevent curling. I used to use Krylon Crystal Clear spray to cover my decals; but found that a couple of coats of CP works just as well and is much faster to use, as it is not necessary to mask off the area being coated.

David, Also one word of caution, With the up locking reel seat and exposed blank reel seat, it is advisable to tell the user not to over tighten the reel seat as it puts a tremendous load on the front portion of the reel seat which has a smaller contact area with the blank. Over tightening the reel seat can cause the epoxy to be sheared from the blank. I have one customer who has the nervou

David, I believe some of the Fuji reel seat can be switched around and modified to be an up-locking rear with seat enclosed rear grip, (if that makes sense). Take a look at the Fuji KDPS 16 or KPDS 17 hidden thread locking nuts for an idea. Perhaps they might work. The rear grip would have to be reamed out to accept the KDPS tube I've not seen any reel seat available to us custom builders;

David, No apologies necessary. The thing about the broken rod that surprised me was it was broken into three pieces! I have never seen that before. I inspected the rod breaks before I shipped it up to Batson and I did not see anything that made me think it was a manufacturing defect; but I thought I would let the experts give me their opinion. Batson Enterprises has definitely gone the extra m

David, I believe him when he said it broke on the hook set. He's a fishing buddy and a straight up guy. His co-angler also told me he broke it on the hook set. He as big as a barn and he said he took a "big swing" when he set the hook. I can imagine a "big swing" for him can brake just about any stick! I told him next time don't swing quite so hard! Don

In March of this year I built a IMMORTAL IMMC72MH-TC for a return client for whom I have built numerous Rainshadow rod . He's a pretty big guy and fishes tournament frequently. He called me a couple of weeks ago and said the rod had broken into three pieces when he set the hook on a LMB. He admitted he had swung hard on the bass; but was surprised when it broke. He also said he loves that rod and

Tom, I use elastic thread to temporarily tie on micro guides. That way, when static loading the blank, I can adjust the guide positions as necessary. I then leave the elastic thread on the guides and wrap up to the elastic thread, after securing the guide foot with the final wrap, and then cut off the elastic thread with a razor blade. On the real small footed tip guides, I use the guide foot

Cameron, I have only built one for a client. When the blank arrived I was impressed with the quality of the blank...perfectly straight. The blank was a Point Blank PB701MHF and the client loves it.

I am sick... recently I dropped my Rainshadow RX 8+ 822.5 drop shot rod into 22' of water. I had my inflatable life vest on and the rod was gone before I could get it off and reach the rod. It also had a Shamano 2500 Sustain with Sunline FC Shooter line on it that had just been installed on it. I saved GPS coordinates on the drop location and have purchased some grappling hooks from Cabela's. I

Nicholas, I agree totally with Tom's comment posted above. I personally think spiral wraps cast just as far, if not further than conventional wraps. I have found that most guys "just can't get their head around them", if you know what I mean. 90% of my builds are bass rods and I have had several guys for whom I wrapped spirals rods asked me to re-wrap them conventional. When I asked

As usual, Jim Ising is right on with his recommendations. Ever since Jim provied that recommendation to me I have been using it on all of my bass casting rods. Works outstanding! The only except being an increase size to #5's on the runners, if the angler is going be be using braid with a top shot of floro.

Jason, A lot of guys "can't get their head around" a spiral wrap. Personally I feel they are the way to go with a heavy stand up rod.

Bobby, Since the rod was purchased in 2011 the manufacturer probably did feel the break was a result of a blank defect. I have had nothing but outstanding support from both Mudhole and Batson. Batson has replaced, at no costs, not even shipping, a rod that was stepped on by a customer! I was honest with them and they said they appreciated the honesty and the fact that the blank was only about
