That should get you in the ballpark, you'll have to adjust from there based on action and grip lengths. I like to have my butt guides around 24-25" from the middle of the reel seat. It gives guys more r

I'm looking for black/white/grey EVA snow camo grips. Does anyone have a one or two they'd part with?
There aren't any vendors that I'm aware of that carry them. The Matagi grips are not what I'm looking for.
thanks,

The MHX S841 might be a good choice for you. Set it up with Pac Bay minimas and EVA grips to meet your budget.

Thanks to all of you for taking time to share your thoughts. I'm open to any other thoughts or suggestions if anyone has something to share.
John,
I appreciate your insite. I like the idea of getting rid of the 'violent' descriptions. I'm planning on having a new policy written up in the next week or so. I've realized there's quite a bit that I need to change in mine!

130. Re: Idea for fly rod
Randy,
I use the double foot minimas for the butt and 2nd guides, single foot minimas for the runners, and a regular loop for the tip top. I've used this setup for rods up to 8 weights (used to catch 30lb kings) with no issues.

Tom,
I like your idea of a time limit! I'm implementing that immediately.

Gabe,
I have made some exceptions for repeat customers as well. I reduce my labor charge.
I have a hard time making any exceptions for new customers who immediately refuse any responsibility and accuse me of building an inferior rod. When a guy's first contact with me after the rod breaks is nothing but anger and accusations, it doesn't make me want to go out of my way to help him. Thi

I'm just curiously with how you guys handle warranties, and specifically how you handle customers who want to ignore your warranty and want a new rod for free (because nothing is their fault!). Do you guys have the customer sign the warranty? I'm thinking of having this done by every customer before I ship them the rods.
I go through all of the stress testing, etc on every blank I build on.

134. Re: Muskie Rod
For big rubber, here are my recommendations:
Tackle Industries 9' XXH
St Croix Legend Big Dawg (you can easily extend it to 9')
St Croix Premier 8'6" XH (you can easily extend it to 9')
I am in the middle of building a rod for my personal arsenal that is basically a Premier 8'6" XH extended to 9'5" with about 4" trimmed off the tip. I am building it to throw Pounders

What baits are your customers going to be throwing with these rods? The intended purpose will dictate which blank will work best.

Hey guys,
I just received an email from a customer about a rod I built for him a couple months ago. I inspected and stress tested the blank before I built on it and there were no defects or scratches on the blank. This is a musky rod built on a Tackle Industries blank. I always stress test and flex these blanks thoroughly before I start building on them. The customer says he didn't fish wi

Tim,
The blanks I'm seeing are not labeled as 'bass' or 'crankbait'. They are labeled as 'two piece freshwater spinning rod blanks' in Mudhole's catalog. On Mudhole's website, they're called 'S Glass Trout'. They may be a touch lighter than what you're looking for. You can trim the tip to get the blank to throw heavier lures but I don't know if the power in the butt section will be there.

Tim,
Have you looked at the Seeker line of 2-piece freshwater rods? I think they're S-glass. Depending on the lure weight you want to throw, you may have to trim the tip.

Buzz, to my knowledge, nothing like that exists. You'll have to strip a factory rod and start from there. My preference would be a Tackle Industries. The only two-piece factory blanks that I'm aware of are the St Croix Premiers and they are very heavy in weight.

Mike,
There's not a huge difference between the 16 and 17 seats. Either one should be fine.
Go with single foot fly guides, they won't be a problem. I use them on musky rods all the time and to date, I've had zero failures. Do Forhan locking wraps followed by 2-3 blocking wraps!

Rolly,
I have a spinning rod build for muskies in my office right now. My grips lengths are pretty much exactly the same.
I would not use a single foot guide for the butt guide on a musky rod. What reel is going on this rod? On big spinning rods like this I typically use Fuji's K framed guides. On the rod I mentioned above, the guide train is BKWAG 30, 20, 16 followed by BLDBAG 6's to t

Jim, thanks for the suggestion, I'll check out that blank.
John, I prefer to keep my extensions under the reel seat. A typical rear grip length on a musky rod is 16"-18", with 18" being about the longest 99% of fishermen prefer. Hence the 18" max extension. Just a matter of personal preference.

Phil, the rod will be used for trolling musky baits. Mostly 5.5" Wileys and Boss Shads. The reason I'm going the surf blank route is that there are no freshwater blanks that can give me what I'm looking for. I am looking for something faster than a traditional trolling blank- and longer. There's no point in having a 12' rod for a trolling rod if it flexes so much that the bait ends up r

Who makes the fastest action surf blanks? I'm looking for a 12' two-piece with a lure rating of at least 6-8oz.
