Nice to see another carper on the boards, Lee! I do a fair bit of carp & catting myself and find it's one of the most enjoyable pursuits, especially mid-summer after I have (darn nearly) gotten burned out on other species for awhile. Free-lining with corn, good day...10 min between takes on the local pits, most between 5-15 lbs. Rarely does a passing basser not exclaim "Man, I don't k

Considering the nature of electrical tapes and others, wouldn't that make a rather heavy arbor? I used to use masking tape all the time on fly rod seats, but the sheer amount of epoxy used has to be heavier than the FC arbors, at least the way I used it. Really, I don't view the strength thing as much in relation to the arbor material as it is in relation to the reel seat material. Have alwa

Thanks, Gents! I appreciate the experience reports on the use of these guides, sometimes when I think an idea great at the bench it ends up getting a "full moon" and snicker response from reality once I'm on the water. I think you all know what I mean, it's humbling at times. Doesn't sound like the tiny inner circle is anymore prone to line interference with pond scums than the lar

I've seen a few of these threads and it has indeed piqued my curiosity, but one question still lingers on the micros and I haven't been able to find the answer here...or elsewhere! Have any of your actually put in a decent season with this idea or similar on typical bass waters? Slop, scum, farmdust, algea and whatever else creates the slimes and residue build-ups on any of my guides looks like

Thanx for the photo-link, Mick. Those are some really nice comparison pics, shows me where I can save a bit of weight in the form of epoxy. I've always focused more on the ramp and getting any sharp edges tamed, but looking at the side by side in the pics I see what is wicking up so much epoxy. Reckon I'll be doing a bit more filing and grinding in the future, original foot shape sure doe

For me, it's a function of fulcrum (where I want it) mitigated by how much handle I can actually have without getting in the way of fishing. Arm length plays a role here, you might want to actually sort this one out in person as it depends on how they actually fish and hold a rod. I often counterbalance with a smidgen of weight, it's just not feasible to have THAT much handle behind the reel.

Hey, I love flyrodding for bass, but I think this whole TX flyrod thing is more an attempt to create a market. Couldn't actually think of any local TX'ers who would ever consider using a flyrod for competitive fishing. When the money is on the line, there just isn't enough advantage (if any at all) to be dealing with flytackle. Interesting idea by Sage, just don't see this working out the way

You said you don't want a one piece longer than 7', then speak of 8'6" blanks in two piece so I'll assume that the two piece idea is a go. Anyone's Steelhead blank or even flyrod blanks will work for this type of need, but I won't tell you that one handed long distance stuff is going to be all that comfy. You can go split-T and counterbalance slightly, that'll give you an easier one hand c

Emory, one needn't rewrite the laws of physics here. I assure you that my fat cork handle on a flyrod increases mass and weight significantly. However, the manner in which it fits my large hand better and the added surface area for grip reduces fatigue greatly. Casting accuracy? If we want to talk about the 2-4-6-8 rule of fishing in relation to rod building, yes to all four numbers. Some h

Heck, Alex...I've been in high end flyshops and stared in awe at the fact that some of the rods selling at TWICE the price range you stated have guides that are poorly aligned to say the least. We're not talking offset strippers here, these are halfway down the rod and way out of line. Funny thing is, shop owners just blow it off and say "must've been a careless customer that whacked i

David, I think you're being played or even tested for honesty. If he's that happy with the rod and price, why have YOU rewrap? Why not the original guy or the person who told him about the supposed $2.00/inch thread? Perhaps I'm just suspicious of folks and their motives when things sound a bit ludicrous, but I'd say you're the "eskimo" in this case and the "ice" is the

Think the exact form of guide plays a role here? One thing I've noticed about the pics of recoils is that they have that "spring-like" form. The tip I'm looking at may have more friction via larger surface area that contacts the line. All the Recs I've seen in catalogs have that and I always wondered if aside from gathering crud, that double wire form is double friction. Probably

Robert, I've built a few over the years on 9' blanks, in fact they are my preferred blank for spinning tackle. SC4/Legend 9' 3wt, SC3/Avid 9' 8wt, and most recently a PacBay Rainforest 9' 8wt. Also have an SC3 "Steelhead" ninefooter, but I think the flyrod blank is a better one for building on. Similar in dimension and overall weight, it seems the flyrods have a bit different weight
