I build a lot of handles with wood and antler/bone mixes.I have always had trouble counter boring after turning the handles. I also bore them out and use foam arbors to lighten the handles. I have tried the pre boaring, gluing in the arbors mounting them to the mandrel and turning.too much slippage on the mandrel. Using the flexcoat pilot bit system where you build your own pilot bits. I didn't think it would react with epoxies, but I have been wrong before! I think I will have to definetely try making some arbors out of it and see how that goes first. If it works out then proceed to some carbon fiber work. I will post again after I have tried it out.

I am thinking about making my own foam arbors out of gray/blue board concrete insulation foam. It looks like it is more dense than the flex coat arbors I have been using. Then I got to thinking if it would work for that why wouldn't it work also for making foam core grips. Has anybody used this material for those purposes or do I get to be the test subject? The only thing I can see is that ma

Dan says no! Dang, I was hoping it would work. I am currently using the flex coat pilot maker set (where you make your own). I take spade bits and bring them down to the diameter that I need. I also bushing them up to a 5/16" dia. They work pretty well but sometimes in hard dense grain the pilot bushing comes off. I would really like to figure out how to pilot up a forstner bit. I hollow

Has anybody used a Dan Craft crafty cutter for inletting their wood grips and if so how did it work. I was just on the site and noticed they were on sale for $49. I know they are great on cork but.... how are they on wood. I have used many different methods (most I have found on this web site) but still looking for a dfferent way.

I agree with the 8 5/6 wt combo especially with a 6wt line. A beginner needs to be able to "feel" the line load a rod and that combo IMO does that plus you can fish pans to big bass with that rod.

I know it is an easy fix and have done many over the years, but I do love the idea of a fly leg on a flyrod. Guess I am just weird. I guess I could tell him the leg is free, but if he wants it fixed (straigthend out just like teeth) that will be $4400 bucks.

Just finished a rod for my wifes Orthodontist as a gift for bleeding my wallet dry, at least that is what I always tell him. Anyway I had applied the finish to the wraps. I usually come back every hour or so just to check on them. Between the 2nd and 3rd time I went to check on it a FLY had landed on the butt wrap and was stuck. I pulled him off (everything except one leg that is in the deco

Thanks Jeremy for the pics and everyone else. After talking it over with the person who it is for he ahs decided on the black and gray(gunsmoke) thread combo. I have used the garnet before and have also used a purple on black before both are quite sharp.

That would be great. I thought about the all black but I want something to break up the wraps a little plus I am going to add a wrap 18" from the butt to measure with so I need something other than black and gray would work.

i am building a black matrix 4 wt for a customer. We are using black SLF guides and hook keeper. Reel seat and winding check are gunsmoke with black insert. The handle is a ash/walnut/antler handle. He wants to keep it "stealth". I was thinking of going either black w/gray trim or maybe gray w/gold? What are peoples thoughts on these or what other color or combinations woudl be good
