By request we searched all of or wood sources in the far north and found some gorgeous Northern White Cedar. This came from a small "mom and pop" sawmill in the UP of Michigan. Northern White Cedar is a rod building classic that goes back to the old days of rod building. Chad: Tom and JP are right on the money with thier advice. If you're making a presentation rod that will probably never get wet, go for it. It does a very nice job as a finish top coat but is not intended to my knowledge for outdoor exposure. Be sure and seal the end grain of your insert with whatever you use. Steve

Thomas: Kerry touched on a VERY important point. Your wood has to be dried to no more than 10% moisture content before it can be stabilized. We kiln dry all of our wood down to 6% to 8% moisture before it goes out. Steve

Thomas: I suggest you have your cobs stabilized. I would be concerned about them not having enough strength no matter how much CA glue you used. Check WSSI's website (www.stabilizedwood.com). Mike Ludeman is the owner, he does the majority of our stabilizing for us. Might be a little "pricey" unless you're having a bunch of them done. If you run into problems getting this done, let me k
