They would have to be stabilized then lots of CA glue to get a smooth finish.

Thomas: I suggest you have your cobs stabilized. I would be concerned about them not having enough strength no matter how much CA glue you used. Check WSSI's website (www.stabilizedwood.com). Mike Ludeman is the owner, he does the majority of our stabilizing for us. Might be a little "pricey" unless you're having a bunch of them done. If you run into problems getting this done, let me know, perhaps I can help.

What is the diameter of an Ice Rod handle (I'm in California)? The reason I ask is that, Rocker wood working store stock stabalized corn cobs for pens and they are used for reel seats as well, but probably too small dia. fro your use.

Google stabilized corn cobs. Several of the pen blank folks carry it.

Thomas,

I did not stabilize the corn cob on the one I did but it would be best to.
All I did was cleaned the inside of the corn cob out then put it on a mandrel and turn down to the shape I wanted. On the reel seat and fore grip I used CA glue 1st then a coat of Flex Coat Lite. The Rear Grip I used 3 coats of Flex Coat High Build

I think there are four photos of corn cob handle in my photo gallery
