you need to ask how he want to work it. If it's off the bow (so he can watch on the fishfinder) while he's reclined on his seat - 6'10" is too short.
Is he fighting fish out of brushpiles or standing timber? Open water humps? Smallies or largemouth?
I have guys that have flip sticks they use for drop shotting. You better get some details.
Casting may not be a need if he fishes verti

A micro butt guide needs to be far enough out to reduce the angle off the reel but close enough in to tame the line or it may impede your casting distance. YOu're going to have to play with it, but don't be afraid to go out to 27". At 30" you are probably going to see some silly stuff start to happen between the reel and butt guide. Of course you can always cure that wiith a tamer guide

if you measure the distance from the blank to the bottom of the ring on a SF6 and a SF4 you might be surprised how little difference there is. Just depends on the brand and models.
The height of the bottom of the ring is what impacts your spacing under load. I'm guessing 9 but on some 7' you may want 10 and the handle length will also impact this number.
I don't advise line going below the

buy a bunch of 4s and dont use anything else. You'll probably need about 9 guides. Static test to get the spacing.

I've liked it so far. No problems with knots myself, however getting it is another issue. Had a big spool of silver backordered for 7 - 8 weeks now and I ordered some 100yd and 2 of the three were backordered also. Its forcing me to look for something else.

126. Re: Excess Epoxy
My wife keeps a box of "Things to Fix" on the corner of my rod bench for when "you epoxy stuff". Typically Xmas ornaments, kids' toys, etc.
Rod bond works good from holding tiles down that came loose, threshholds in doorways, etc...

Roger - to your point.... saying it is a tool is 100% on track. At the elite level you have guys carrying spare trolling motors and generators on board.
I love this story:
The Elites were fishing my home lake and a very good friend of mine was a marshall - basically he rode along with a pro as an observer for the day. They went to the north end of the lake and proceeded to cut right across th

Most tournament days run sunrise to 3:00. That's at least 8 hours, not 4.
A lot of the time you may have 3 or more rods tied up with the same exact bait. Example: schooling fish on swimbaits - they get torn up quickly and you don't have time to rebait and stay on the school at times. Rebait comes later when the bite dies off.
Or you could have three swimbaits on... plus a couple cranks, a S

Why would I do that if I make $ off the replacements? Build replacement into the price of the original. No problem is most custom builders can't afford to

Some good discussion here even though it focuses on split grips:

Lorenzo - what are you wanting to accomplish with grip length?
Balance - what weight is the reel?
Casting - two handed or flick of the wrist one handed?

Yes. I know I had a couple sets late 2009/early 2010. I believe Steve Gardner had used them before that.

135. Re: senko rod?
You need to find out how he is going to use it - and also what size.
I've got some guys using 7.5" senkos with 8/0 hooks... you wouldn't use those rods.
I also have guys fishing 5" senkos as a topwater bait. Again, a different rod yet.
I have guys skipping senkos under docks... different build yet.
Basically - need more info.

136. Re: going pro?
Don't forget that a large part of "going pro" is being able to sell your rods. I know plenty of builders who produce fabulous work but couldn't sell a patch to a one eyed pirate.
I believe you also have to put building in "business" terms. If you are upside down, you're going to be a hobby. You also need to identify WHO you want to sell rods to and if that is a group that

138. Micros - Interesting
Received a mass email survey today from a production company...
"I need your opinion on whether micro guides are going to become the standard for your fishing rods. Would you please let me hear your voice on this by answering a few questions so that I can build you exactly what you want in a rod? It will only take a two minutes."
The questions go on to ask how you feel about micro

Bill - try this. wrap once in front of the foot, then about 4 -5 times on the foot. Push the threads down over the tip of the foot and wrap it up. You may need to push the threads down over the tip of the foot a second time after about 5 more wraps or so. Tell me if you can see a difference in a "prepped" foot and a this technique once finish is on.

Great ideas plus I had a few emails too. Thanks! I've got over 100 pieces laying around, so some of these projects should be doable.

145. PVC remenants
A little off topic -
I've got a large number of 2 - 3 feet long 2" PVC tubes left over from shipping rods. I've have been trying and trying to think of what to do with these as I'd prefer to use them as opposed to filling up a landfill.
Any ideas? Rod rack is about the only thing I've come up with and I already built a rack for finished rods and a rack for blanks.

Steve - what are the pullout results on the Batson - since you quoted - "Specially designed foot creates superior finish anchoring"
(Keep in mind that brand of finish, thread, and wrap style all impact pullout strength as well as foot design)

149. Rogue Rods sold
It is my understanding that very recently Rogue Rods was sold (as in the last week or so). As of today the web site is up but they are not answering any of the Rogue numbers.
I really don't have/know any details. Didn't know if there was anyone around Medford/White City who might have heard something.
