I would suggest that you put a whole piece of the foam in the bottom of the jig so the knife blade doesn't dull on the metal. Use a long Exacto blade that will fit the slot and span the opening of the jig and drag it across the foam to cut it. If you got thet right jig you should have enough slots to cut all the pie shapped pieces. After you have the colors that you want to piece together use

667. Re: weaving letters
Very often if you have used a computer to make your pattern you forget to justify your letters to the center instead of to a margin. When you do that the letters will appear to run off center because of the rod taper and different letter widths.

Jim; One thing you should be doing when color change weaving is to take all the threads out of the stack each time and be sure that the one you want isn't wound around another thread and be sure that it seats against the wrapping thread without trapping one of the other threads between it and the wrapping thread. You don't have to pull hard just snug it into place. If you do break one you can

Why don't you just use a piece of Stainless Steel Tape? It's has an adhesive on the back is thinner and won't effect the blank at all.

Which version of pcstitch are you using? The place to determine the number of threads in the pattern is where you can determine size and cloth count. You will find that window as you go through importing a picture. Change the size from inches to threads (eg 100) and the cloth count to half of that (50) and see how it looks in the preview window. If you have enough detail to suit you go with

The numbers for Madeira Polyneon are different from those of their classic (Rayon) so it looks to me as though the Sulky cross reference won't work here.

673. Re: Guide alignment
Alan, You are thinking of guide location not alignment. Guide location for Spinning out fits can be found in the library section and has pictures of what you are refering to. Guide alignment can be done in any number of ways but the easiest is by sight.

Brent; What you are looking for is a Pantone chart. They are expensive as I recall and since you can't trust colors that you would see on your computer screen you would have to have the chart. If it was me I would just go look at the thread from one company or the other and choose the colors I wanted for whatever I wanted to do. One big problem is that Madeira doesn't name their colors. The

Bill; Yes guides up. However you are right that you will end up with one or maybe two guides more than optimum depending on how heavy the blank is. That's why I said you can optimize the set up. When you actually put the reel on and pull on the rod as though fishing with the line attached to something the tip will flatten out so yes you can adjust the spacing if you wish. I will confess that

Tim; Start by putting on the tip and the next guide back. Locate the guide about 3 1/2 to 4 inches back from the tip. Put the rod in your stress test device and tie a cord to the tip just behind the tip top. Now stress the blank to about 90 degrees with the axes the guides will be on in the UP position. Do it this way for conventional as well as Spinning rods. Now tie a sinker to another li

Keith; The articles in RodMaker magazine for weaving and CRTA for cross wraps will be a big help but you may also want to get a copy of Doc Ski's video or I guess CD now. It will give you step by step instruction on how to weave. After that feel free to E-Mail me or I am sure, Doc or any other weaver that frequents this board. We'll be happy to answer any of your questions. If you can you m

I'm working on one now as time permits ( I have others that have to get done before Christmas) that will have 90 hours or more just in the weave. It will take another 3 or 4 months to complete.

Ralph; Assuming that you are using a thread that did not need CP. I would put on another coat and see how it looks. You didn't say how thick you wanted your final coat but you will have to get enough thickness so you can smooth off the nibs without cutting into the thread again. I would suggest 400 wet or dry paper and sand lightly. You may need to apply a couple of coats before you try sand

Depends on what you want to put on them and the degree of detail you want in the pattern. Letters work well depending on the font you choose. Fish work well, usually, but if you want some more exotic things that need more detail the patterns require more threads in the design and may not be suitable for smaller diameter blanks.

This pattern can be done easily using pcstitch. The size will depend on the blank circumference, the detail you want in the crest or the type of weaving jig you have and how many threads it can hold. The best detail will require around 150 design threads but a decent pattern can be made with 100 design theads and 5 colors to do the whole Crest.

Just to make things clear I don't use a 10 foot rod. Too old as Jim suggests. However I was at the Seeker plant looking at their new blanks and part of the conversation was about how some of the guys use of the Ulua rods on the rail.

Jim Upton
Phil; To answer your question some of the guys use the longer rods on the rail. The roll of the boat and the action of the longer rod really work a fish.

Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy....The Rod Gods were surely looking after you. That's for sure because you are way over the hill and I'm sure they (the Rod Gods) practice a certain degree of leniency in cases like yours. I'm guessing 10#s should hold it.

Tip size is the size of the tip of the blank and yes, is the size you will want for the tip top. When you order there will be two sizes you will specify for the tip top. Ring size and tube size. The tube size (inside diameter) should match or be just slightly larger than the blank tip size. The ring size should be the smallest that will easily pass the line and any knots that will be going th
