Norm,
Thanks for the offer. I am looking for 6 of them for some bamboo row trolling rods I am making. I will check out CRB when their website is back up and running.

Are these still available?
If not, are there any good wood alternatives for reelseats for casting rods?

As a bamboo fly rod maker, who makes his own blanks, I always take into account the distance cast. There are several on line software programs that allow for the change of many rod blank design features. These programs will modify a blank's taper to take into account these factors. This is why I build my own instead of buying premade bamboo blanks.

Sorry I don't. You may have some luck checking several different stores. In WI, I got mine at Menards. It has been several years ago. You should look for Western Red Cedar bark.
And don't bother putting the big pieces with holes drilled into the garden. Haha ha.

You can usually find the bark at a landscaping company and some of the big box stores.
You will have to cull through the bag to get enough.

Well I guess I will take a different approach. If you are in business, having some change on hand is part of doing business.
There is no good reason to not have the ability to make change for a $100 bill, less your charges.

I had a custom branding iron made through Woodcraft of my logo. It works great for all sorts of jobs. Reelseat inserts, cork on the inside of the rod tubes, wood rodmaking jigs and displays. I love mine and the only suggestion I can offer, is do not have thick lines as they take longer to heat.

Robert,
In the mid 70's Fishing Facts Magazine had a series of rods designed to fish nightcrawlers with light hooks and line. They made the rods near Milwaukee, WI. There was a book called "Lunkers Love Nightcrawlers" that details the rods in it.

Ok.
If I got a defective product, I would send it back to whoever sold it to me.
There are some inexpensive blanks out there and these problems you are having are not uncommon.
Most likely not a moisture problem, but instead a poor manufacturing process.
Good luck.

Bob Venerri is the guy.
He is not quick on the email. Might want to try and call him.

David,
If you are looking for a router bit to make rails, a fingernail bit is what you need. A modified bit will give you better results. The modification involves grinding the flat spots at the top and bottom of the cutting surface back at an angle. This will result in rails that align with the center of the reelseat insert. If you use an unmodified bit, the rails will be in line and not po

Dale,
You might also look at Snake Brand guides. They have wire that varies based on guide size. They also have a new guide called a "Universal" snake guide that has the bottom concave to sit on the blank better. The guide feet are pre shaped and do not need any attention. Just wrap and you are done.

If you put a drop of water on the spooled thread and it beads up, its waxed. If not, it will usually turn the thread darker until it dries back to its original color.

Bruce,
You can use any thread you want. Beware many fly tying threads are waxed and may create a problem with the type of finish you use.

49. Re: rod maker
I would strongly suggest you give yourself an education if you are going to sell bamboo rods made on blanks you do not personally know the builder.
There are many sources for "cheap" blanks. There is a reason they are cheap.
You might consider reading this post.

Coren's in Chicago has been selling rodmaking items for many years, and still do today.
You could also add Orvis.

51. Re: wood blanks
There is a book by John Betts called "Making Strip-Built Fly Rods from Various Woods on a Lathe" that details building a wood rod.
There is also a book from the early 1900's called "Amateur Rodmaking" by Perry Frazer that has a section on building wood rods. This book is available as a free download elsewhere on the web.

Has anyone tried the new Universal snake guides from Snake Brand?
It looks like a really good idea to have the bottom concave to sit lower on the blank. Also like the shape.

Buzz,
You might try this as a fix.
Have angler remove his reel and place a couple of paper shims under the reelfoot to help prevent it from moving. Then rub some beeswax on the threads of the reelseat to make it a little sticky. This should prevent the ring from turning and the shims will tighten the reel enough to keep it from moving.
Just a thought.
