I've seen something like a spincast reel cover mounted as a first guide over ten years ago.

I have two blanks from different companies next to my desk. One is an overstock. I just checked them. One is a 2-pc, and is 1/8 inch over spec, the other is 1/2 inch short. This is within the norm.

I never understood why builders would put the the blank manufacturer decal on a rod they built. When I build a rod - it's mine! I put my name on it... and perhaps the customer's name on request, but my name/.com is always on the rod, never the parts manufacturer.

Either MHX CB841-blend or a popping blank rated for 1/4 to 3/8 or 1/2oz. lure.

I do have a fore-grip on my rods and I always grip the rod there.
I also like a definite end to my fore-grip... with no ramp, I think it actually helps with hand placement.
It's true that a ramp does not add much weight by itself, but all the little things we add to a rod - ramps, checks, hook keepers, butt caps, etc., all these things are cumulative and can add up.
I also realize that

I'm one of the few who don't do it on bass rods. No winding checks or hook holders either. Anything we add to the rod can only add weight, damping, and reduce sensitivity, and increase build-time and cost. Additionally, it makes my rods unique and different from all the other "me too" rods out there. Uniqueness can be a great sales calling card.

Generally, fast action for one-handed casting, and moderate-fast for two-handed casting. I like a popping rod for casting bass-sized crankbaits, they cast farther than a fast action rod using two hands (spinning) with this size lure. I can feel the rod load with the popping rod.
However, with the ultra-light rods you are talking about, the blank should be able to load on it's own weight and I

Might be a broken blank. Is it softer there if you squeeze it with your fingers? I would contact Mudhole in any case.

I would go with the ceramic alconite guides... I tested a metal guide years ago by sawing a piece of mono back and forth through the guide ring by hand... with just a few passes, the eight pound mono melted to flat ribbon. The same test on a Fuji Hardloy guide had no noticeable effect on the line. Ceramic guides replaced metal guides in popularity decades ago, and I can see why.
I prefer Daiwa

Mo, if you are using something like this (from your previous post):
20Y - 12Y - 5 - 3.5 - 3.5 - 3.5......
- try substituting a 20V style spinning guide for the 12Y and see what happens. You can bend the 20V forward slightly so it matches the height of the 12Y. In test casting, I noticed that the line "ballooned" on the first two guides the most. This is an attempt to reduce one o

Which ever choke guide/third guide lines up with the first two guides when put against a straight edge is what I would go with (the straight edge should intersect the rod in front of the choke). You might have to stretch it out to 4 guides. I would also recommend test casting.

Yes, peacock is available in non-metallic, I see that now. Azul also seems to be a similar color.
All your posts were helpful, thanks guys.

Mike, what would you say is the closest to the peacock blue in a non-metallic?

I know that garnet Gudebrod w/color preserver looks like anodized red aluminum when finished, but what color thread do I want to match an anodized blue reel? No underwraps or metallics please.

What is the difference between a bamboo rod and a "cane pole"... the cane pole being a rod with no reel or guides, just line tied to the tip? Is the cane pole made from sugar cane? What is the history on these?

Tom Kirkman, can you tell me what you mean in your last paragraph in this older post of yours I found on balancing... why do you fish it tip-down, and for what kind of lure and technique? Please elaborate, thank you.

It's not a problem with math or physics - they are what they are. But you have to apply them corr

I believe the MHX to be equivalent to the RX7.
MHX HM would be equal to RX8.

I like a Popping blank rated for 1/4 - 1/2oz. lure. A lighter blank (probably high modulus) will tend to be more sensitive, which you want for jigs.

When people say that a rod is balanced, do they mean that it balances horizontally when held in a fishing position with reel and line on it? And do most people fish with the rod horizontal? Or do they mean tip up? Tip down? Just checking.

Actually, when you crank to close the bail on most spinning reels, there is often a loop formed and reeled onto the spool so that on the next cast, that loop creates a birds' nest.
If you close by hand and then pull the line tight to the line roller or raise the rod tip quickly to eliminate slack, the loop and resulting birds' nest is eliminated. I always close by hand.

If they are coming unbuttoned under water, I would look for a heavy, low-modulus graphite rod. E-glass may actually be too slow. A longer blank would also add weight. Heavy =damping = softer so it will be less likely to tear small hooks from soft mouths. I would get whatever action you like for good casting, fast is fine.
I would also buy pre-sharpened, cone point hooks with small barbs. They

Thinking more about it, my fish only point the direction they do because the handle was to my left in the wrapper when I aplied the label. If the rod had been turned around, the fish (and the logo/specs) would be pointing the other way. It's purely accidental.
Forum: rodboard 12 years ago

Honestly, I don't think it matters which way the fish points, but I agree that it should be right side up with the logo and specs.

Is the hook coming out when the fish is under the water or when it jumps? It makes a difference in blank selection. I assume these are freshwater trout.
