I have used cable ties for both test casting and "Test" fishing. When fishing, however, some of the #5 fly guides I was using would spin to the side... especially after catching bass up to four pounds. But the guides never came off.

Blue is a "cool" color and silver is also, so they can go together quite well.
I would go with a slightly different shade of blue than the blank and silver, you can't miss with that color combo.

I use 25Y - 16Y - 10Y - 7V - and then 3.5mm flys up to the tip.
Whether you use 3 or 4 spinning guides to start, put those 3/4 guides (on the rod) up against a straightedge and make sure they line up. See the new concept primer article in the library on this site for details.

The typical bass fisherman reads Bass Master magazine, where so-called expert fishermen instruct him to lock down his baitcaster drag with Vise-grips in order to punch though a giant plastic bait made from old, discarded semi tires, with a mondo 5X-strong 5/0 hook which could do double-duty as a shark hook! Funny but true.
I know, I used to be one of those neanderthals.... until a genius show

Just pick up a G.Loomis rod catalog... the descriptions are excellent.

The fiberglass rod has more damping... this is said to help keep small treble hooks holding fast in the fish's mouth.
A graphite rod can be made with a slower action to mimic the slow fiberglass action, but it still won't have the complete package of damping (slower reaction/recovery speed) that the fiberglass rod will. It will be lighter though... proponents of graphite crankbait rods will su

I would say definitely a "5" power popping blank (These often include "845" in the model number)... casting distance is not an issue... he is pitching to docks, those are short, accurate casts, not long casts. Plus, the braid casts further than mono to start with. Pulling the fish away from the docks is the issue, the heavier popping blank is what's needed.

One point I never see mentioned...
In some cases, if the line is touching the blank during the hook-set or when fighting a fish, it can change the effective drag setting; friction on the blank can make the drag jerky or inoperable at a given setting.
This makes the case for spinning or spiral wrapped baitcasting rods.

How do the Batson Forcast H ring guides, particularly the H rings in the VS3 guides, compare to others?
Are the rings fairly smooth and polished like American Tackle Halide rings?
Or, are they a little rougher like Fuji Aluminum Oxide/Hardloy?

A fiberglass rod will tend to give you more confidence on the hook-set, and you may hook more fish... this is because the rod is typically heavier... follow my train of thought... because it is heavier, you have to grip it tighter... this, combined with it's extra weight translates into more effective leverage.
However, there is a price you pay.... the rod will wear you out quicker and you

I would not worry about the weight of the handle on a stout flipping stick like that... a balenced rod will wear you out less at the end of the day than a lighter one with the regular cork that is not as balenced.

Based on the weight you are using, I'd go with a "3" power.

I see, Emory. It's much more complicated than I thought.
I am surprised how low a rods' resonate frequency is... 2 - 5 hz.... yes, I can see there would be no way to practically amplify a frequency that low... you would need a horn the size of a house probably. Talking about resonate frequency, I would think that higher would be better... I would think it would be more efficient.
I wonder

Tom is right... any company selling rods or blanks that claim an air chamber increases sensitivity, or that they do something to amplify sensitivity is hype... you can decrease damping and mass so that you have less loss of sensitivity, but you cannot amplify sensitivity.
A manufacturer might be able to increase velocity of sound propagation, perhaps that is what Lamiglass is trying to do. A

Mo, as far as I can determine, the XMG is a blend of 57 MM in the butt section, and intermediate modulus in the tip... probably 43 MM. Construction sounds similar to G.Loomis Bronze "blend" blanks.

If you are going to put a reel on it or cast with it, consider a Rainshadow IP840 ... I would think that would be great for jigs and live bait, two of the most popular crappie fishing methods. Long casting, better hook setting from the moderate-fast popping rod action ... will cast a small crappie jig farther than anything out there. Also, that softer moderate-fast action will cast live b

You don't need an extra-fast action to detect hits.... the extra-fast action rods they usually use for drop-shot to detect the hits... that's a slack-line technique... if you are drifting/dragging, your extra-fast tip rod will already be loaded... you are not going to see much change. Best way to detect the hit with that technique would be to feel it... which means you need a sensitive blank... s

Don, you are on the right track, the blank you mention would work well... you need a heavy rod to set the hook with that thick plastic bait, and to handle the weeds... a Shikari flipping blank would also work, such as the FS 766

I wonder if something like Styrofoam used as handle material could have similar or perhaps even better properties than the cork handles so popular today?

MagBass rods are stout, fast-action rods marketed for bass fishermen using a technique called pitching. They normally "run and gun" up and down the bank in a boat making short, one-handed, pin-point casts to structure, usually with a baitcasting reel.
The most popular drop shot rod right now is the extra-fast "0" power popping or "Hot Shot" rod.. it's usually a
