Jeff, I have used the nu-skin Rod Armor and Amtaks X-tube and what I have done in front of the foregrip is to shape a cork ring or 2 so it tapers down toward the blank. Shrink the Grip material over it, then wrap with thread up onto the grip material and epoxy.

185. Re: Which end?
I'm not saying I'm right, but I always seem to start from the thicker end and work up the blank. The sad part is I actually had to sit here and think about it, LOL.

Scott, The existing guide on the rod, this is a rebuild, is really sloppy on the 18 stub on the tip sizer. I think I need to find something closer to a 19. At this point anything resembling a black framed tip with some sort of ceramic/alconite, or even SIC ring would work regardless of manufacturer.
Thanks

I need a tip with a .288 tube, looks like size 19 (.296) should cover it. The rod has Fuji BSVLG guides so a black frame would be great, I don't really care about ring color, but a 12 ring or larger would be great.
Any ideas????

Well, I decided to try my hand at marbleizing, since the fancy threadwork seems to drive me nutz, LOL. I read and reread the article in the library and decided to go for it. Mixed up my epoxy and added the pigments (testors). Decided on blue as the base color and would use gold and silver as the marbles. At the last second mixed up a little green as well. Got the base blue on no problem, le

When measuring wire frame guides do you measure the OD of the ring or the ID of the ring? I need to replace the guides on an older rod for my dad and I'd like to keep it with similar style guides.
Thanks Tony

196. Kudo's to Mudhole!
What a disaster! My fiancee calls me up about 6:00PM on Thursday night saying that there's a package from Mudhole on the porch , it's leaking something and it stinks. I ask her to open it and the bottle of Permagloss I ordered broke and was all over everything, thread, cork tape, rod armor, and guides. So when I came home I was able to clean the guides w/ denatured alcohol, but nothing else w

I want to tint a blank black to hide some of the "battle scars" that I have given it. I have removed all the hardware. Will 1 or 2 coats of PG mixed with black testors pigment, or the universal tinting colors that Jimmy Mac recommends be enough to achieve this?

Scott, it's an 11' surfcaster, so a little extra weight wouldn't be too noticeable. The reel seat has been giving me fits the metal hood that fits over the plastic hood (Fuji DPS reel seat) slides off the plastic part. and the threads seem beat up, so I might as well take it off and replace it. Hopefull one or light coats of permagloss will do the trick.

Scott, no I epoxied the threads only. The blank is a lamiglass gsb 1321L and it has a glossy finish from the factory, the top of the rod is worn down through the finish almost to a point that you can feel the graphite, so I want to refinish it. Not too sure how good my explanation is. I have another rod that has the same issue, I can take pics if needed.

OK, so now I've got the guides, fore and butt grip off the rod including the pesky epoxy ramp that came off easier than I expected with a little heat and a razor blade, probably gonna replace the reel seat too, why not? The reason I'm redoing this rod is that the finish wore off the top of the rod completely, I'm assuming from sitting in the rack on top of my truck. The underside of the rod is

Darn, not what I hoping to hear, LOL. I expected it, but still. I'm going to try to slowly remove it. It's built up pretty good near the grip, should be able to use the dremel there and hand sand/razor blade the rest.
Thanks

Hi all, I am finally getting around to redoing my surf rod. Nothing like waiting to fish are being caught, LOL. The guides are off and I want to replace the cork tape on the fore adn butt grip. The fore grip has an epoxy ramp that I had made to transition the thread onto the top of the tape. Is there a simple way to remove the epoxy. It is either Devcon 5 min or 2 ton epoxy.
Thanks

206. Rod Armor question
I am redoing a rod for a friend and was looking to try Nu-skin rod armor on the butt grip. It used to have cork tape but it was worn down and taken off, by my friend. I was thinking of using rod armor on top of the blank, w/o cork tape. Is this doable? Or do I need a layer of cork tape first. This is a thick surfstick, so I'm trying not to increase the diameter too much.
Any Ideas?

Mike from a plugging perspective, do you prefer the SW series or the SU series? I have been contemplating the SW1207, SW 1208, SW1209, or the SU 1207, SU1208.

208. Re: Old Wood Lathe
Roger, if there is a model number on the lathe anywhere, google Old Woodworking Machines and do a search by the model number. You might be able to get a manual/partslist for the lathe. I found one for a 1969 sears lathe. The site is a PITA to find stuff, but there is a message board, that might help you find stuff. It worked for me.

Bruce, I've used Quick Grip and Amtak X-tube, but not Rod Armor. Any preferences?? They both work about the same?? I've been happy with the quick grip, any reason to change?
Sorry to pick your brain!
