Frank, You should learn to use the Fuji GPS system. With minimal input, it will give you the type/size and location of each/all guides. You simply remove the unnecessary ones from the train. Anglers Rsrc - Fuji in the left panel is a sponsor. Don

Frank, You will find more information if you do a google search on dual rung. Hybrid usually refers to materials such as: A hybrid blank made of graphite and kevlar or a hybrid bearing with ceramic balls and stainless steel races. I did help an acquaintance set up a dual rung rod. After it was built, both him and his friend achieved their longest casting distances. Dual rung rods do w

Pay attention to the rod tip during the slow motion sections. The oscillations will rob some distance and can feedback to the reel.

Lamiglas used to have a 2 piece in the SB 166 5F blank. It had the spiral to which you are referring. It is not presently listed on their site as two piece. Often they may still have items in stock that have been discontinued. It may be worth your time to call Lamiglas and describe your needs.

Hi Dave, >You might want to look into the FG knot. >Run braid to your heavier mono/flouro leader ending at your sinker. >The FG is the smallest cleanest knot for connecting braid to heavy leader material. I'm not sure we are on the same page. A standard rig for slide bait fishing with a 4/0 would be something like the following: 60# mainline 125# run or shockleader (maybe 25

" A bimini into Allbright is kinda big, not sure how big is too big for a #12 guide." As mentioned, size 16 is appropriate for the runners and tiptop. The problem is the blank is probably not up to the task. Remember the 4 to 12 ounce rating. A typical setup for a 4/0 would be along the lines of 30, 25, 20, 20, size 16 runners and tip top. This should work satisfactory for 4/0 &

So, what size rub line/ shock leader will you be using? To get maximum distance with a 4/0 you will need to cast 8 ounces. Will the blank take a hard cast with 8 ounces? (a 4 to 12oz rating may not be very accurate). Since 8 ounces puts you outside the safe envelope of casting 60# mono, a rub line will be required of about 100#. Remember the abrasion you will get from the rocks. This means the

"With the Penn, it will mainly be used slide bait style." "the Penn with 60lb mono." Perhaps you could explain a little about slide bait style. The difference between a Daiwa 7HT Mag and Penn 4/0 is significant. Surf rods using a Penn 4/0 usually have a size 25 or larger stripper. For guides, Alps have a good reputation as does Fuji. If the setup were a little lighter,

By composite, can we assume you are addressing a carbon fiber and fiberglass mix? Two companies come to mind. Zziplex Primo Synchro - rated to about 5 or 6 ounces - excellent distance capability I believe there is a distributor in Maryland. Otherwise, you will need to order from the UK. Lamiglas Tri-Flex is composite. They are listed listed on their website and run to a maximum lengt

Hi Barry, The butt extension you are referring to was originally called a reducer. Since the older blanks were much larger in diameter, it was difficult to grasp around the handle when casting in the low reel position. Since blanks are now smaller in diameter, the reducer is no longer needed and the reel is moved 8 to 10 inches up the blank to provide a better grip. The butt extension is used

Randolph isn't the only person who I have heard saying to use CP to prevent metallic fading. Additionally, a couples years ago, I did a nylon over metallic wrap and added acetone to the epoxy to ensure full transparency of the nylon. The finished product turned out very nice and I mentioned it and the use of a thinner to the thread manufacturer. I received a scolding from the manufacturer and

Batson, IRW, and Talon-Graphite are the top sellers in Hawaii. All three companies have heavy surf blanks with a proven track record. The Rainshadow SUR1569F-M is available, does not require long distance shipping, probably is two piece graphite with a supportable warranty.

I have a couple of the SB166-5F blanks in two piece and smooth finish. They were a special order and I will not sell them. They are typically one piece and the finish is spiral. You may want to call Lamiglas and ask what they can do for you. Other than the SB166-5F, the only other blank that may work for you is an Island Rod Wrap (IRW) Big Island Special. Other than it being designed for 100

Hi Bill, The guys in Hawaii tend to use a lot of size D thread. Since the D thread produces large bubbles, another solution is to down size the thread. I do build an occasional tournament distance rod. Although these rods undergo severe stress, size C works for the larger guides while size A is used for the running guides.

Epoxy has improved over the last decade. But, it still has a tendency to yellow. Perhaps someone who does this type of wrap could comment on the current situation of having lighter colored wraps take on an amber tint. Quite some time ago, I did one piece silver under wraps on a rod. After a couple of years the silver had a significant amber tint. Since that time, I have been sensitive to the c

Temperature for Tuesday, Mililani Hawaii High 76, Low 69. If you live in the higher elevations in Hawaii, there may be a need to warm the area to cure the epoxy. I would prefer using a lite build and having a slower cure time.

Herb, You may want to look for another shipper. I found the $300 you quoted to be shocking. Shipping a quantity of 12 blanks (14' length, 8' tip) in 4 boxes from NZ to Hawaii (door to door) was quoted at 220 USD and included documentation fees. It did not include import fees. The quote was for UPS Express. Walter, People often go by the length of the blank when it may be more appropria
