John,
I just bought one of those from the company that Simon suggested. I think he had the thing shipped out the next day. Very quick service but it takes like 3 weeks to get here (by ship I imagine). Randy.

Mark,
I've been using Color Lock on the last couple rods that I've built using Madeira exclusively. No residue and no problems whatsovever with applying finish. Randy.

GUSA stands for Graphite USA (blanks). Not sure if they have their own site (didn't look yet) but Mudhole sells them. Randy.

Steve,
I would think that if you put a coat or two of CP before applying finish it would be fine. Maybe try a test blank first . Randy.

Billy,
Yeah, I told him that it would be hard to build one rod for both different types of fishing but thought I'd at least try and get as much info here before we I talk to him again. I think he primarily wants a grouper rod to be used occasionally for swordfish. I really didn't know if one rod would work descent enough for both. Randy.

Hi all,
I've got a customer who wants a rod for both very large grouper and swordfish. He's fishing deepwater wrecks for the grouper and night fishing off Florida with live bait for swordfish. Neither type of fishing requires much casting so I'm leaning toward a 5.5' Calstar E-glass blank with Aftco wind-ons and either an Aftco uni-butt or stor-a-butt. I'm also trying to match the rod to an

Keith,
I don't know if this is your cause or not but I've found that if I don't mix long enough I get tiny bubbles all over the surface of the finish. I've learned (through trial and error) to mix the finish quite a bit longer than the instructions say to. Right now, I use Aftcote almost exclusively and mix the finish for about 5-6 minutes instead of the 2 minutes per instructions. I use the

I've built a couple of small freshwater spinning rods with both the red and green guides. I used them for about 6 months now with no signs yet of the finish coming off. Randy.

I do the same thing as Steve (repeated layers on top of one another) but use an aluminum pie tin. Lasts about a year depending on use. Randy.

I use the Testor's model brushes and throw them away after each use. Walmart sells them for about a buck for three. Randy.

Bailey,
There are two good books that immediately come to mine. One being "Decorative Wraps" by Billy Vivona and the other "Custom Rod Thread Art" by Dale Clemens. The latter book is getting harder and harder to find and usually has a hefty price tag if you can find one. I got mine a couple of years ago. Billy's book is very good and your best bet is to email him direct

Rob,
I just got some Permagloss and ordered online a couple of unlined paint cans. I guess the trick is to put the permagloss in the can with a bead around the lid to seal it then have a screw in the bottom to allow the liquid to escape without introducing air. One the instructors at Charlotte explained it but I don't recall who. Randy.

The Redskins official colors are burgundy and gold. If you can't find a close enough match with Gudebrod try Madeira. They have just about every color known to man. Randy.

Louis,
If you go directly to a UPS hub it is much, much cheaper. I found out the hard the way the first time when it cost me $75 from California to New Jersey using the UPS store. I researched it afterwards and could have saved as much as $50 had I gone to the hub in the first place. Randy.

It was nice meeting you and getting ideas for future wraps. Like I said I'm not very good at selecting color combo's so your insight was a great help.
Billy and the crew it was very nice meeting you guys as well and and jumpstarting my interests with VW. Very much appreciate the company, hope to see you all next year (if not sooner). Randy.
