Awesome show, hats off and thanks to all of you that worked so hard to make it a really special show. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Certainly worth the trip from California. Looking forward to next year. THANK YOU!

Ken,
I just did one (sort of) on a split grip bass rod. But, what I did was build a very small taper from two corkrings that I wrapped with black thread. I slowly built up the finish (about 5-6 light coats) to make the transition from the reel seat to the blank incorporating a hook keeper. Email me if interested and I'll send you a pic. Randy.

John,
The only time I've had a problem with it was when my pop-up blocker on my firewall program blocked it. I adjusted the settings and haven't had a problem since. Hope it helps, Randy.

156. Re: Favorite Thread?
Greg,
I prefer Gudebrod NCP (or any other NCP for that matter) because I apply a "flood coat" on the guide wraps allowing the fnish to soak in around the foot. Using nylon or Madeira requires a coat or two of CP which prevents the finish from soaking in properly. I routinely use NCP, nylon, metallic and Madiera on everything else. Just the way I do it. Randy.

John,
I'm not sure of the differences between the two editions but I believe the book is out of print and hard to come by these days. There have been a few selling for top dollar on @#$%&. If you've found any edition that's reasonable in price I'd probably jump on it. Randy.

I just built out a Loomis 7' Blend (B 492 T 5.5 8-14#) bumper wrapped with titanium guides. Great combo that works very well. My .02. Randy.

Tom (or Billy),
Are there any plans or talk about doing a Visual Wrap demo at a future show? I have the program but am a little hesitant to use it due to the learning curve. A couple of tips and maybe a hands-on demo would greatly help. Thanks, Randy.

160. Re: rod bond uses
I let a friend borrow some to put his grips on his dirt bike. He kept complaining that every other glue he used eventually came loose. I don't think he'll have that problem any more...Randy.

I've been lazy and haven't posted any pics here but for other things I use photo editing software to resize mine. I use Adobe but there are many other similar programs that will do the same thing. Randy.

163. Re: chuck
Rod,
Wrapping from either side doesn't really make a difference. My American Tackle wrapper's chuck would also loosen frequently especially on the larger saltwater rods. Finally broke down and bought the Renzetti. Best money I ever spent. Randy.

165. Re: Rod Finish
Tim,
Since this your first rod keep it simple and just apply the finish to the guide wraps (and any cosmetic wraps, weave etc.) NOT the entire rod. Unless I'm mistaken it sounds like you intend on applying finish to the entire rod blank which you don't have to do. You didn't state what type of rod your building but unless it's a stout stiff rod like Jesse suggested finishing the areas with no

Geoff,
I recently bought the entire set of mandrels from Andy including some that are threaded. That's probably overkill but I build so many different size and types of rods that I will use them all at some point. I was a little unsure as to how to use the threaded mandrels but Andy stepped me through it and now it's a breeze. I'm sure if you just give him a call he can help you with whatever

Will,
With that rod I would probably start with the 20 as the stripper then proceed toward the tip with the 16, 12 and probably 5 10's. I build quite a few rods similar to that configuration and the 20 as a stripper seems to work fine. The 25 might be necessary depending on what reel your using or exactly what your using the rod for (casting, trolling, etc.) but I think the 20 would probably b

Allen,
My "rod room" is just about the same size as yours. I too use laminate flooring for ease of clean-up and it reduces the amount of dust in the room. I also keep a silent type air purifier running all the time. If you email me I'd be glad to send you some pics. Randy.

169. Re: Thread
Jerry,
I use size "A" NCP thread for most of my guide wraps. The reason for using NCP is it allows the finish to "flood" through the thread to the guide foot without using color preserver (cp) making a more uniform and tight finish bond. Using color preserver will not allow the finish to soak through properly. Occasionally, I'll use size "C" double-wrapped on the

Terry,
You can absolutely build a stand-up rod with the combinations you mentioned. I do it all the time. I like to use Hypalon but that is strictly my own preference. Hypalon (or EVA if you prefer) with an aluminum reel seat such as an Aftco with a matching gimbal makes for a great rod in not only looks but performance as well. I think most people that prefer an aluminum butt assembly are

I just use a thin strip of masking tape enough to keep the gimbal centered around the blank. I score the inside of the gimbal and tape and glue it up with Rod Bond. I've never had one loosen yet. Randy.

Phil,
I cut blanks down all the time and sometimes just a couple of inches makes a pretty big difference. I build quite a few saltwater boat rods and usually shorten them from 2-6 inches. Depending on the type of action you desire, try cutting just a little bit at a time. If you like the action of the tip just cut the butt or vice versa. I would first try just a couple of inches say from the
