Hello all. I am planning a new build after watching a couple fly fishermen put on a clinic in front of me ,now I want to build a fly rod.
I'm willing to drop a fair amount on a decent blank. The rod will be used for still water throwing of streamers to striped bass on the
west coast, fish ranging from schoolie sized up to 10 pounds. I encounter wind conditions so I know I will need at least a

184. Thank you
I just want to put a shout out to this forum . I recently built a casting rod on a Bushido CB78-2/6-12 . I put micro
Fuji guides on it spiral wrapped and a winn dry split grip. I fished it last weekend and it performed flawlessly
for striped bass. Every one of my friends has complimented me on how it came out. Great blanks BTW.
Being only my second build it came out really nice and I would no

My first build was a kit from Mudhole, it was a MHX spinning rod kit, with a concept guide system. I wholeheartedly recommend starting with something like that . For a first build it came out great. Welcome to the addiction. I recently built a rod for fishing striped bass with winn grips and micro guides, spiral wrapped, and fished it today and it performed flawlessly. It takes a lot of practice wra

Thank you Roger, and all of you for the tips!! This is why I love this board.
My room is small where I build ,and I must use ample lighting. Powerful
glasses and a headlamp works for me. It's a work in progress .
The white hardboard is a great idea. I will look into that.

188. Fuji Micro Guides
I just got some of these in the mail for a crankbait build I'm about to do. Ho boy. I think I'll need a spot light and a 10 x pair of readers just to see them. I am going to assume I need a forhan locking wrap on these. They are just so small. Anyone have experience fishing these? I am gonna have to play with the static test. I plan on casting light and medium crankbaits with braid mostly. Not su

The major paint stores sell wedge foam brushes that will stand up to solvents.

Thank you I have been looking into the Revelation blanks. I am not opposed to braid and if there are
bigger fish around either and I really like Utmost Enterprises so I will have to holler at them and check it out.
Heard a lot of good things about Bushido. I have used and liked Batson though so I'll have to do some
research.

Hi all. I'm about to build a rod for throwing jerkbaits and lightweight topwater lures ,preferably
in the 3/8-1 oz size. This will be used in freshwater in the delta,San Luis reservoir, and the Sacramento
River in CA. Preferably in the 7 and a half foot range would be ideal. I don't want the rod to be
too heavy, maybe a fast action with a bit of tip? Just seeing what the experts have to say.

Avid Steelheader here. In my experience a blank through carbon fiber reel seat surpasses all others in terms of sensitivity. My high end rod is a NFC spiral wrapped carbon fiber handled . It's hands down the best drift fishing rod I have ever used.

A spiral wrapped rod not only eliminates rod torque when fighting a fish, but also in my opinion is more sensitive due to a more direct contact with the line. I could be wrong about that. You definitely can reduce component weight by utilizing fewer guides. I plan on wrapping several spiral wrapped casting blanks as my rod building skill improves.

Update: I did a load test and really like mudhole's layout. I also spent a half hour looking for one of those damn micro guides I dropped on my floor with a flashlight and extra strong readers lol. Thanks all for the good advice . I will post up some pics of my first rod build!

Being my first build I have decided to go with the recommended number of guides and use the spacing chart. I will be sure to test the guides prior to wrapping. I just glued the handle all up and I'm excited!

203. First Rod Build
Hello all. I've been lurking here for a while now and enjoy the wealth of sharing and information here. I recently ordered an MHX S871-2 rod kit which came with a micro guide set. There are ten guides in the set. Seems like overkill to me but I have no experience with these particular guides. Any suggestions on whether I need 10 guides on a 7 foot spinning rod? These guides are tiny,I'm gonna hav

My suggestion is to maybe have him pick a factory rod or find a custom built rod he likes and use those specs as a guideline.
I surf fish on the west coast for striped bass and my needs for tossing swim baits and plugs if very specific. I tend to like a medium heavy
action 9 1/2 foot graphite steelhead rod with some backbone and a bit of a faster action. Like an 8-17. These are just some thou

Hi all. Figured I would introduce myself to the board.
My name is Robert and I live in central California.
I bought Tom's book a while back looking to get back
into rod building and found this board. I look forward
to exchanging information and ideas here . I have already
learned a lot just from going through the search engine,
lots of great advice and expertise here!
