Interesting, I will definitely play with that. It makes sense. Also could explain why I ended up with a kink in the thread on the 5th pass back down.

So I read Tom's article on acid rod static load guide spacing. However, it states you should have some Idea where the stripper is going... This is my first conventional rod ever, custom or store bought. So I have no idea where to locate my first guide. I also don't know about sizing. The blank is a RCLB70M I plan to use on the party boats in SoCal. I have a Senator special 112 loaded with

I found this very informative. Hoping to get a more even finish on the current rod I'm building for my daughter.

I think my layout is ok, but I can double check. I used so,e white thread laid out along the real seat to ensure the axis were good. I used a ball point pen to mark the line at intervals. I made marks on a piece of stiff paper 29mm apart. I started with one point on the string lined up with the first paper mark and made a mark on the string that lined up with the second paper mark. Moved the

Wow thanks, John! Very informative. This is my first wrap using a multiple thread layout. I'm not planning on closing the pattern (maybe I'll try to tackle that beast next time), so I didn't use taper offset spacing, is that a problem? I used 29mm for each center of the diamonds, and 6mm each side of the diamond center for the box wrap. 29mm is the circumference of the center of my wrap area

Wrapping with size A metallic Pro Wrap and Madeira for the standard colors, if it makes a difference.

Does anyone else have issues with this? I can't seem to get these metallic threads to pack at all. Maybe I should keep going and try to pack at the end. But it seems that standard colors lay down pretty well next to each other. It's just the metallics I have issues with. I am laying down a 5 (may go to 7) thread diamond that will be the center of an iron cross. I wanted it to stand out so

Will look into the ball gimbals...still having trouble deciding on a blank. There are some that are same brand, same material, and same specs but have different butt/tip dimensions and prices. For example, the Seeker S270, S870 and S970 are all live bait, 7', fast, 20-40, e-glass/graphite composites. But all have different tip/butt dimensions and are priced 72, 83 and 90 dollars respectively.

Gotta put these out more than a day before expiration!!!! Oh and say "tomorrow" if it's tomorrow, rather than "Wednesday." Totally would have took advantage.

Sold. Now just gotta find a vendor that carries. Those wide open ID and the covers really open up options for the blank selection.

Thanks Donald, I look into that when I get the reel. The guy in bought it from was great. After ordering, he called me up and told me if I wasn't fully satisfied, send it back for a full refund, including shipping. He completely rebuild, so hopefully will be a while before needing to relube. I was looking at glass, but I kind of want to put an aluminum gimbal on that I can put a cover over.

I'm currently in the "finished rod after finished rod" category. I've got 4 under the belt and love it so far. Just bought a reel for the fifth. Gonna start looking at blanks now.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I ended up finding a pristine rebuilt Senator (made in USA) spooled with 30lb mono on the web @#$%&. Went ahead and picked it up. Will definitely bookmark this thread as I will probably do another conventional build at some point. May do a Jigmaster next time. I think I'm done with spinners. I have like 10 of them from UL trout rods to an 8' 6"

Thanks for the very comprehensive answer Russell. I have a Shimano Baitrunner 6000 OC that looks like it may fit the bill for the fly lining. I could set that out while fishing low with the conventional. Will take a look at the suggestions. The Special Senator has a 4.1:1 ratio. If you say go higher, what are you recommending?

Thanks for the recommendations guys! It seems the Jigmaster and the Senator are within my price range and can be upgraded to better parts later on if they get worn out. The Tekota looks like a solid reel, but again is a bit out of my price range. I'm decently coordinated, so I suppose I can manage the learning curve that comes with a non level wind system. This forum is great and I real

So there is a Senator with 2.0:1 gears and 20 lbs of drag and a Special Senator with 4.1:1 gears and 11 lbs of drag...which is the go to model? I don't know much about gear ratios. I know low gives more cranking power and high gives faster line retrieve, but no real world knowledge of how it feels. Thanks for the Avet and Saltist suggestion, but that's out of my $$$ range.

Thanks...have looked at Senators, but those don't have a level wind. Like I said I think I could figure it out quite easy on a retrieve, but trying to fight a big fish seems like it would be hard to focus on thumbing the line. What size Senator is recommended for this application?

Hello all, this is more of a fishing question, but since I'm building the rod that it is going on, I figured I'd post here rather than registering on a new forum. I'm going to build a 20-40 lbs rod for yellowtail. It will be my first conventional rod. I have a bass baitcaster, but this will be my first saltwater conv. Anyways I will be either bottom fishing bait, fly lining and possibly jig

So talked to MudHole today and they confirmed that the blanks are grossly overrated. Not bad quality for an inexpensive blank, but the claimed line and lure ratings are a bit off. He estimated the 7' M to be 10-15 lbs class and up to 3/4 oz lure, whereas it is marketed as a 14-18 lb 1/2 - 1 1/2 oz lure. So big takeaway, if you decide to build one of these, buy more than what you need to compen

No, I love MHX blanks, but I'm trying to keep it cheap, as I'm about to build a heavy salt conventional setup as well as another rod for my daughter. I do most of my fishing in the salt, so I don't want to put a lot into a freshwater rod. I've read good things about the blanks, but they seem to be a little off with their ratings. Compare these to the GBC blanks which are about the same specs

BIll, I was talking about searching this forum, but I agree that the new site is way less user friendly. I liked being able to go to a manufacturer and get their similar rod models in a nice organized list. These are the ones I was talking about: Sort by price to get the blanks only, without the kits.

Originally posted in response to an older thread, but no response. Strangely a search for IM6 turned up 0 results. In any case it is in regard to the markings of the CRB IM6 blanks. Form example I would not fish 10 lb line on the rod rated for 6-10lbs. Anyways the rest is in the message: Am looking to get one of these built for myself to replace a Berkley rod that came with an Abu reel com

Am looking to get one of these built for myself to replace a Berkley rod that came with an Abu reel combo. I experimented on the rod with guide removal, painting, etc. I made a 601L setup for my daughter, and it feels super lightweight...like trout/panfish. It's listed as 6-10 lbs and 3/8-1/2 oz lure. To be honest, I wouldn't cast out more than 1/4 oz lure, if that. And I went with 4 lb lin

Have seen Custom Rod Thread Art suggested, but also that you need a basic understanding. Check out mudhole's references section. The B. D. Edler set has some really good info. I didn't really follow your issue though. Maybe if you posted a picture of what your problem is, people may be able to help more. YouTube has some good videos too on people making decorative wraps.

I didn't realize there was such disparity between the 6000 size Shimano and the 6500 size Penn. The Penn holds 210 of 20 lbs test; the Shimano holds 170 of 16 lbs test. I think the Shimano more closely fits the size I was looking for. My ideal was around 200 of 15 lbs. I think the Penn would be uncomfortably large on this rod. I have a Penn Pursuit 6000 and a Fierce 4000. I may just take

I had a bit of CP dry on the wrap before I could smooth it out. It doesn't self level like epoxy does. Some spots may have a little more build up, especially if you are doing a soaking coat like many on here advise. I had to use my work bench in the garage today because my table was too short. It was 109° in the SoCal valley today. My first two coats I was able to put nice wet coats on the w

Nearing completion on this rod . Butt wrap is done and under wraps complete and CPed. Over wraps and final CP next weekend and probably epoxy the following weekend. Hoping to fish it soon after. I initially went with the recommended guide spacing, followed by a stress test. Ended up adding one extra guide and adjusting spacing for a smoother line flow. Using a 30-20-16-10-8-8-8 double foo
