I make multiple passes with the blade over the ends of the thread at a very low angle to the blank. Hard to describe but think of it as shaving the thread little by little. Have you ever seen a woman tease her hair? How each pass she gets a little bit of hair. Kinda like that, each pass I'm shaving a bit more off. That's the best analogy I can come up with, sorry! This spreads out the multi

So it was windy when I was going to spray, so I tried the paint on method with a sponge brush. It was on my wrapper going at speed, and I applied. The result was a deep gloss, not completely level, and...bubbles!!! Needless to say I won't be trying that again. In any case, I stripped all the paint off and recoated with color. Will try again next weekend maybe with the spray gun. Oh, and

Decided you were right. Went with Madeira red on the underwraps. Looks really good with silver and blue accents. I also did about an inch in solid blue between the first two guides with silver on each end. Once it gets a coat of epoxy my college logo is gonna go there thanks to the NCAA decals MudHole sells! Will post pics when done :)

Just want to express my appreciation of these guys' customer service. Both have been outstanding. I would have no reservation about recommending them to anyone! I've used MudHole in the past, but never really had a reason to contact customer service. I'm sure they are great as well! I have talked to their sales staff, who is very helpful. Great job at keeping customers happy, keep it up

John, thank you so much, as I was unaware of this. Well now that it is in place, it feels very solid. Should I be worried about the thing in the future cracking or splitting or anything? Or is it good once its in place? Not decorative, just plain black. I will definitely take this information into advisement as I continue making rods.

Yeah I'll keep that in mind. My next rod is getting an aluminum gimble. I'll put that one on at the end.

Alright this should be an easy one. I am just looking for opinions! I wanted to see what people thought about doing a base wrap (tiger) with madeira thread, while doing guide underwraps in metallic. So the combination I'm looking at is a black and white base with a red overwrap for the tiger stripe. And a metallic red underwrap for my guides, which will be wrapped in nylon black. Will th

Yeah I have a regulator on the gun. I leave the compressor wide open and keep about 25-30 lbs at the gun. I'm going to adjust the fan size. I didn't know much about setting up my gun properly. Hopefully this will help reduce the waste. One ting he told me was to adjust it using water because it more accurately replicates the consistency of the clear. Then run acetone through to flush out

Roger, thanks for the reply. I have the upgraded chck and it seems really solid. The rod supports, however, seem a little less so. They are the standard ones. I guess I'll have to look at upgrading that in the future.

Yeah I guess I'd be better off getting a closer fit to begin with. Well it's on nice and tight. It was a 10 incher that I cut down to 9 and rounded off the corner once glued in place. Looks pretty good, but want to get a little more girth off. Every time I get the wrapper going and put sandpaper to it, it seems to shake and kinda bouces up and down at the grip area. Still getting the hang

Hey folks just wanted to share my experience with other news so they can learn from me. I installed a rear grip yesterday and let it cure last night. I used the technique of putting rubber cement on as a lubricant and paste epoxy only where the grip was. I still sanded out the grips a bit with a reamer. When I put it on, it slid on so easily that I kinda dropped to the floor. It was a vast

James, I went ahead and ordered one from GetBit and it doesn't match up...both Forecast products. Is there anything you guys can do to help me? It's a little more obvious in person, but you should be able to tell from the picture. Thanks.

I'll look into that too Bill. I'd have to get a set up to run off my compressor, because I'm not going to buy a dedicated airbrush compressor. I think they have adapters. Unfortunately I have a bit more time to consider, as the weather isn't going to be conducive to painting this weekend anyways. 85% humidity.

Thanks Bill. I think I will stick to spraying until I can test out other methods. I went to the auto paint supply shop today and got hooked up with a quick lesson on gun adjustment. The guy said I could brush on, but don't want t to try on a rod before I can practice. He also hooked me up with a bit of reducer for free! So I may try using that. Thanks for all the help and tips!

Chris, I'll have to try that. I'll talk to the paint shop about how to adjust the gun better. Maybe I can run water through it or something to adjust the pattern so I don't have to mix up paint to do so. Let it dry for a day before painting.

Thanks Russ, this will be for a saltwater rod rated for up to 60 lbs line. I will explore making a rod holder. I could probably bolt it to a leg on my work bench.

Martin, are you new at this? And are you using a over a or d over a? I'm new to this and had some trouble doing a over a without finishing the under wrap. If you're a seasoned wrapper, it may not be an issue. D over a is not as tricky for me.

Donald, if you look at the article I linked from Fuji, you will understand. It looks like they tied the tip to a stationary object on the floor. I'm tracking on using two lines. One to load the blank at the tip and the other through the guides to assess the guide placement. I wasn't sure on Tom's method if the weight was supposed to be hanging freely off the ground.

Bill, sorry for the confusion, the difference in methods between the two articles is what triggered my question. Thanks for the clarification.

Bill, yep that's what I have. It produces beautiful results but wastes a ton of paint. I have talked to a body shop like some have suggested. I figured they could just do it at the end of painting a car, because they probably will be pouring out the leftover paint anyways. I figured it would take them a couple minutes (that's what it takes me), but they wanted to charge me $100 for a 6' tw

Hello again folks. I have read the article a few times, but have two questions. 1. When holding the blank, should I be aiming for a 45* angle from the ground? 2. When loading it, am I free hanging the weight with the line vertical or tied to something on the ground that is some distance away? I just looked and found out where my second question came from. I read this article a while ba

Mat that's a great idea! And if it works out, maybe I could build it up cheap too and have it for a surprise trip up north.

That is certainly a possibility which I have thought of, but it seems to me to flow the same amount of paint in a smaller pattern. So in my mind this makes it harder to control than a wide pattern due to the speed at which I would have to paint. Of course this could all be in my head. I should talk to the paint store. They have some knowledgeable people. They could probably tell me about

I guess I can do that. I'll give it a go soon maybe. I should be getting my power wrapper soon. I don't really have any spare blanks at the moment, so maybe I can get a cheap metal rod from the depot. The color coat may need some time to cure also if I do a test piece. The blank I'm doing has been painted and curing for a couple weeks. May have to do it in 2 weeks or so if I want to do a tes

Has anyone finished a paint job with a 2k automotive urethane clear wiped on like PermaGloss? I have an HVLP spray gun that can use; I get beautiful results but SOOOOOO much overspray. I think only about 10 percent of what's sprayed ends up on the blank. So I was thinking about wiping it down with a sponge brush and the wrapper turning like you would with PermaGloss.

I was planning to use a human as my blank holding device ha ha ha! So that should be sufficient! As far as tie off line, I was planning to use 40 lb line, but I could get something stronger, just in case. Thanks for the advice! Always better to learn from someone else's mishaps when able.

Do y'all's scuff the blank at the tip before installation? I watched the Flex Coat video about using a glue gun to make small rods out of the adhesive that you can just snip a bit off to drop in. Im thinking about trying that method if I have a glue gun. Tom can you elaborate about getting it between the tube and blank? I usually shave off bits of adhesive and stuff them into the tube. T
