Thanks for the reassurance, Sheridan. It's a 112H, so I think I'll be ok. I have a Fin Nor 4/0 size reel for a YoYo rod I'm building, and that one is getting an aluminum one. I talked to a local tackle shop about some things and they said the same as you. I went ahead and ordered the Fuji graphite and sent back the aluminum. I imagine that being a Fuji, it will have the channels, but I will

Hi, about to embark on an offshore rod building journey. I am doing a rod rated for up to 60 lb line. So I may be using up to 20 lbs drag. Will be using 40-50 lb mostly so 13-17 lbs more likely. In any case, from my reading, you want to load from the tip top only and have a trivial weight attached to the line running through the guides.
So how strong is tip top adhesive? If I suspend a 20

Spencer, just for reference, the seat I am talking about is this: . It's not a heavy duty. The heavy duty graphite starts at a size 22, which is even larger than the aluminum i have. I know Alps makes one, but it costs twice as much. And because I only build for myself (for now) cost is a factor. If that one won't stand up to the use, I will stick with the aluminum one.

Bill I haven't found anything in my readings about blank and seat prep. In fact I've read that you don't want to sand down graphite finish because it weakens the blank. Can you point me in the right direction?

Spencer, I will take it into account. I bought some drywall tape for arbors based on something I read awhile back. It's supposed to be good because it is a mesh tape and the epoxy can penetrate it somewhat, unlike masking tape.
Thanks bill. I will look at the graphite models. I think I would be more comfortable with a size 18. The 20 just seems so big. Thanks!

Hello, I have a RCLB79ML. I'm either going to pair it with my Jigmaster or 112H reel for casting either bait or heavier lures. I have a size 20 aluminum seat for it, but was thinking about downsizing to a size 18 graphite. I will be using 30 lbs line and probably 8 - 10 lbs of drag.
Would anyone suggest a trigger seat for this type of casting? The round trigger seats only go down to size 2

James, thanks! I'll get that one. Yeah, the color on the website photo does not look like it would match at all.

Hello, I know this is a long shot, but I'm hoping that one of you may have seen both of these. If not, please feel free to answer question 2. I purchased this real seat for an offshore rod: . Getbit does not have an aluminum gimble that looks like it will match the gold. It's a pretty dark gold color. So I was thinking of this in the calcutta gold: .
So my two questions:

So if I do go to the Forecast, how important is an upgraded chuck?

Just curious how you turn grips. I'm guessing just using a big enough fighting butt that none of the Eva went into the chuck? Or do you have a system with a mandrel that you engineered?
Seems like a good starter kit. How easy was it to get a hang of speed control with your foot?

Hello gents,
Just wanted to see if anyone has had a chance to toy with MudHole's RBS power wrapper? I'm looking at getting one since I have a lot of builds I plan here shortly. This hobby has gone further than I expected it to. I was looking at this because I don't have an unlimited budget. The main drawback I can see is the v stands rather than wheels and bearings. I doubt I would ever h

Thanks Russ...I actually noticed in their blueprints that they list a spiral build. I bought the special edition Rodmaker CD all about guides, and the articles state that casting distance is not affected negatively by spiral wrapping. Why do you suggest against it? I have read that it significantly reduces/eliminates torque on the rod when fighting a large fish. Also with a 112h conventional

David I have that same book in your picture. It's what got me started about 5 builds ago. The learning curve was pretty quick, although from some I've seen, others are way quicker. I've seen some first builds people posted that outshine my 3rd or 4th (I'm pretty proud of my 5th!). I guess some people just have a natural artistic talent.
I did an almost closed wrap on my last build. I want

I looked at my medium heavy boat spinning setup, which I made with size 8 runners. It looks like it would pass a braid junction pretty well at 30 lbs test. I think I will get those and maybe bump up to 10s for the jigging stick.
I am thinking about checking out this hollow core braid. Looks pretty cool.

I have had good success (with some human error failures) with DupliColor Perfect Match followed by a two part clear. I won't do a long one piece rod, because I don't have the facilities for it. I have done a few two piece six footers, though. Maybe one day, but I digress. I use a tomato cage upside down to hold the two halves of the rod. I don't use a primer, but an adhesion promoter, follow

Thanks for the idea! I checked them out and they suggested the guide style Spencer talked about.
So can I pretty much take the suggested layout and go 180 out on all but the Stripper for a simple spiral. Of course adding a bumper in between stripper and first 180 guide. I am going to contact get bit and see if I can return the ones I ordered.
I will get the XN style guides when I order

Thanks for the reply spencer. No other inputs?
Would these NLG guides be suitable?
On the topic, thoughts on using any of these (including the ones I originally purchased or the ones recommended by Spencer) on a vertical jigging rod as well?

Hello all,
I just got my order in from Get Bit, and I'm a little concerned about the size of the guides I chose for my Rainshadow blank . I chose a size 10 Forecast STLG running guide . The rod has an extra fast taper and the line guides look a bit beefy for the tapered end. Did I go with too much? I went with a size 10 to leave the option for braid open in case I need to pass the leader k

So I got a guide guide (no pun intended), to help with learning about conventional spacing. Previously have only built and mostly only fished spinning rods. I get the idea of static loading and spiral wraps, but the guidance I received from the publication states that you probably already have an idea about where to put the stripper. Unfortunately, for me this is not true. I am looking for a

I'm no expert, but from what I've been able to gather, metallic thread is not well suited for guide wraps. Better for undereraps, trim or inlays.

If you're into the whole building thing, I'm sure there is a tutorial on here for building your own hand wrapper inexpensively. Then they get the joy of building a rod on a wrapper they made themselves as well! But a wrapper and a supply of thread will be needed regardless. Mudhole has some inexpensive IM6 blanks in lots of colors. Get bit also has some. They run a ministry as well, so they

386. Custom Decals
Hello all! Was doing some Googleing and found a tutorial for custom making decals. I just wanted to see if anyone here had done the same. I searched for the word decal and came up with no results for this particular method.
So it is basically a clear 2" x 4" Avery mailing label is printed with a patterned background and left white on the design where you want the label to remain c

Not sure what a dork fish is??? Oh...just checked Google! Got it ha ha ha!
Got my first request for a rod today. My CO asked me to build one for him! I actually brought it up because of my brand name, which happens to be my call sign. There's more to the story, but pretty exciting as I wasn't even looking for business! He wants a squadron themed rod.

Wow, do you start wrapping guides before the handle and seat dries? I recently finished a purple one for my daughter. I was proud of myself to get it done in about 3 weeks! It was supposed to be a Christmas present started about a week prior. Ended up being an early January present. I was building it in my bathroom rather than my workbench because I wanted it hidden from her. Very uncomforta

Come to think of it, I would probably put the inlays in the blue tie off (which I did CP), and then just used a solid overwrap of the metallic white without CP.
