2041. Re: Writing on blanks
Jon, I hope I have the right stuff. I got it from Dale Clemens in the late 70's, and was to be used with a heat embossing pen similar to a wood burning tool. Lynn

Darren, Minima size 16 casting measures 26.3mm. outside, where it butts against rear grip.

I suppose for larger blank diameters small o rings would also work. I sometimes will use two and possibly three if the guide has a long foot. You can wrap up to them and then roll them up the foot. When you start running out of room cut them off one at a time. Very small ones will stretch a long way. Don't ask me to quote sizes! I walked into the local orthodontists office, asked if they had any

I tried orthodontic ligatures as per Roger. Best thing ever.

Razor blades can be resharpened quite easily.

I don't build a lot, but I've built 6 bass rods on RX-7 blanks recently. I can't see how you'd be anything but happy with one. I am also quite tempted with Bushido.

Gib, you're going to have to do a certain amount of reading to get into this and many of your questions are addressed in the library section. You may as well read them there and save someone the trouble of retyping the info. You have to read it either way. I will say in regard to casting rod butt guides, as long as the ring is at least as large or larger than the line guide on the reel, ring size

2050. Re: Winding Check sizing
Metal winding checks should fit a little loosely so not to create a shear point which might cause the blank to break if it bends down into that area.

Scuff the old wraps with scotchbrite and recoat. If it holds up for you o.k., if not you can strip it then and all you lost is a coat of finish.

Why I can't stand Diawa : a 2500 series measures the same as a Shimano 4000? Which measures what? When you ask for guide size recommendations, it helps if we know the spool dia. Or at least I thought it did.

I might add that the painted finishes on some blanks may be removed with dna, so test somewhere on the blank where it doesn't matter before proceeding.

You can shape cork with an electric drill held horizontally in a bench vise with little trouble. Check out Flex -Coat videos.

Glenn, I have an 8ft. flipper built on a rainshadow SW-967F. The rod weighs 6.5 oz. I just tried this and it took 4.3 oz.s hanging on the butt to bring it just to neutral in my hand. If you bought a true flippin blank it's most likely lighter than mine, but it's still gonna take a lot of weight.

I know for a fact that wrap finish will cause some sharpie inks to run. I think you should test on other cork with whatever you decide to try.

If I can't know who made something, I can't buy it. Just a thing with me.

I'd like to see some reasonably, priced, well engineered, open ended hook keepers. Almost every guide manufacturer seems to be behind in this area. I agree about the winding checks!

Age 62, started on the advice of a local sptg.gds. dealer and builder in 1979 who said "you can do this". Was fortunate enough to have a hand in the production of the Dale Clemens catalog, which allowed me to buy components at wholesale + tax prices and drive the 40 mile round trip to pick them. ( a blessing, thanks Dick French!) With the closing of Clemens and my son coming along I go

2068. Double ft. guides
Do double foot guides provide additional stress relief to the blank, as in helping to keep it from breaking under stress, or does the double foot aspect only serve to make the guide itself stronger and less prone to breakage?

2069. Re: Rod action
I find this issue to be very confusing. If it's a big fish vs. a powerful rod setup, fished from a kayak. At some point do you find you're reeling yourself to the fish instead of the other way around? I have no experience in this area and have no plan to get any, but I fished a 12ft. aluminum johnboat a few times and a 3lb. bass was capable of moving the boat.

2070. Re: Sensitivity
I'm gonna have to apologize also, if just for what I was thinking! The Good Lord gave me 2 rodholders, a left, and a right. If I'm not using them, I'm not fishin'. I need the signals that are transmitted up the line to come down the blank and into my hand. Vibration transmission might be a better term than sensitivity.
