Mark, I'd check out Tackle Warehouse or similar and see what rods they sell for those baits and go from there. That would get you in the ballpark.

A few ft. mono tied to the spool with an arbor knot, braid tied to that.

Sounds good to me. Now if you blow thru a soda straw over the wraps after coating you'll release a lot of bubbles that may remain.

If I need Fuji stuff I seem to be stuck with Fla., otherwise Utmost and Schneider's. I just sent my wife's and my passports back for renewal by certified mail for the same cost I'll be paying to ship 3 guides and a tiptop to me from the sunshine state. Just sayin'

Roger, I wish I knew the answer to your question. I personally hate seeing the line touch, but after much reading about the use of fly guides and micros on casting rods it seems to have become an acceptable practice. When I say I start with a Batson recipe, they usually are saying to use older style more conventional size casting guides on top. This as you said, is the only way I know to keep t

If I was in CA I would 't be ordering Pac-Bay stuff from Florida. No offense Florida.

Were I to start to building casting rods today I would start with the simple spiral. No point in putting guides up top and trying to keep the line up off the blank, especially with the small size of guides popular these days. I always use a batson recipies chart for guide location on a conventional rod as a starting point before my stress test, and add an additional guide location in case I migh

Mark, I think using Minimas would still be in keeping with your motto. While appearing to resemble the old style of guide, modern materials are way ahead of those old rings we all remember.

The inside of a minima ring measures the same as the outside of a ceramic ring. A size 16 ceramic has a smaller i.d. than the equivalent minima. I believe they do fall into position about the same as KL-H's.

For a rod that light I doubt you'd notice the difference between the 2 types, and the minimas are lighter. Ceramic rings may offer a little longer casting distance. Maybe.

Mark, You might need a Pac-Bay catalog for that info. Go to their site and request one. They get them out pretty fast. Now I know why I can't get a Bklag-20 H anywhere! You might be able to tell something from the Utmost site. Decided to go KR this time and now no one has a ss alconite 20H in stock.

Very happy with both blank and service on my 1st order from these folks. Above and beyond the call of duty.

Sounds like something I would do, however I mix so precisely that I seldom have any of either part left over. Ahem. I wouldn't be afraid to try it. I suspect those who would tell you otherwise are selling finish.

As in Norm's post Shakespeare used the external sleeve also. (We used to be able to buy their blanks) Not sure if that's still possible.

O.K. fellas, I read Volume 8 issue 2 again this morning, (for the 4th time), this time as a proofreader and nowhere in that issue is there any mention of bending guide frames. Lynn (I don't want to start bending Sic guides just to later have the rings pop out.)

1971. For Spenser Phipps
I made a post on Jan.6 regarding low frame 2 ft. guides used as bumper guides (and the bending thereof) on simple spirals. You responded that bending guide frames was the thing to do as per an article in rodmaker magazine. Would you kindly provide me with the issue #? You said it was part of the first simple spiral article that appeared. Thanks, Lynn

1973. Re: dryer motor
Well I just tore it apart. I suspected 21 volts after looking up a replacement motor for that model and that is what I have. The shaft is only about a 1/2" long, is half round where it engaged the turntable, and is plastic. I had never intended it to be used for finish application, only as a dryer in the event my current one quits. (you don't even want to know where that one originated, tha

Lance , great reply. I had a custom rod given to me as a gift in the late 70's and when I next saw the builder he told me (we'd known each other in the past) " you can do this yourself" and Iv'e never looked back. All it takes is a little advice and some reassurance and your on your way. At the same time I had a 2nd. cousin who built custom rods in a local fly shop and he wouldn't tell

1976. dryer motor
Our microwave died, hee, hee, but the turntable still turns so no worries there. If I salvage the motor and it runs on 21 volts (which seems likely) may I also salvage the stepdown transformer that currently powers it? Haven't had time to rip it apart yet. I'd like it for a spare dryer motor. NO electrical knowledge!

1978. New Builders
I built my 1st rod circa 1980, in an attempt to have better rods for less money than I would otherwise spend, and living less than 30 miles from Dale Clemmens Custom Tackle, I paid nothing for shipping and this dream actually came true. I didn't build many from 91-05 but have been going ever since. Now, I don't get out much, but in all these years I've never met another fisherman who's told me t

I was wondering how long it takes to receive these back issues if ordered. A week, 2 weeks, a month? I didn't want to bug Tom, I figure he has enough on his plate right now. Trace, sorry to jump your thread.
