You're doing all right , just apply another thin coat. When you graduate to a better finish your problems will be over.

1862. Re: CP
It should. Do as Michael said. More than one coat would be best.

1864. Re: Epoxy good or bad
I'd like to thank the moderator for his input on this topic . Any finish demands practice to perfect a technique, and that's the best advice you can get!

I guess it depends on who's looking at it. With those colors, put the ball in the customers court.

Given the company in question, I would send it to them and get an opinion, sounds like a very unusual situation. I'm sure they won't steer you wrong.

I have used Citristrip on several ugly stix as well as an old Master saltwater rod with success and all were left coated for 24 hrs. The Master was left to sit for 24 hr.s several times. That being said I want no part in ruining someones old blank. It may not be necessary to allow it to sit for more than an hour or two depending on the finish. You can also wet a scotchbrite pad with it and scrub

By the way, my dealings with GetRodBlanks, have been directly with Gregg Thorne.

1873. Re: Drop shot rod blank
Sorry, I just noticed Getrodblanks no longer appears as a sponsor on the all important list on the left, I believe they are still in operation however. Those who support us as builders are all of value.

Give Getrodblanks a look. They have nice blanks, and you won't break the bank.

Why not a cane pole?! Maybe because a cane pole weighs an ounce or two more than a modern blank. We like to keep them as light as possible, you know.

1876. Re: Finishing tiger wrap
Dane, heat your top wrap very thoroughly with a hair dryer, then let it sit until cool. This should allow the top wrap threads to set into the top finish on the bottom layer and help keep them in place. Then put finish on top with as little actual brushing involved as possible. The first coat needn't be perfect it will benefit from a second anyway.

Chech out some of Jim Trelikes's builds some time. I've never seen anything better.

If the shoe fits wear it! Also, does the tip have to match in color? Talk to the guy and get his opinion. You can only do so much.

I'll confuse the issue ever farther. Were one to build a casting rod with regard to the spine, it would be up to the customer or builder to decide whether the spine would be on the top or bottom. Assuming it uses a right hand crank reel, which all did at one time, and many still do, the spine would be on the side of the rod during the cast. If being cast properly, the reel handle would be straigh

Brandon, that wear you see tells you something. It drives me nuts to see rods with a keeper over a bare blank. If the hook were not rubbing on the epoxy, it would be rubbing directly on the bare blank and that could lead to real damage. I view those areas of epoxy as sacrificial. Your doing folks a service by protecting their blank. Finishing will become easier as you discover a product you like

I mix with syringes all the time for some times as little as a total mix of 1cc. The only way to have issues is to mix the same part in twice by accident. It seems as careful as you may be it still happens now and then.

Robert, steam may well have been my next step if I hadn't gotten it, but this stuff is way harder than any epoxy guide finish I've ever run into. Then again I haven't seen everything.

Thanks for the help guys. I left Citri-strip on it for 18hrs. and that softened it enough that I could eventually get it off, and I mean just enough. Ricky you may have hit on the head about U.V. cure, this stuff is way harder than epoxy but has the same look, so not permagloss or similar. Lynn you are correct about the Kevlar also. So if anyone brings you a rod to have a few or all guides replac

1889. Dobyns ? for Tom Wewerka
Tom, you posted about a Dobyns repair you had where the finish was so hard you were afraid of blank damage during wrap removal. I find myself in the same boat. How did you get the finish off. I looked into these rods (Savvy) and it states all wraps are Kevlar. I cut along the top of the guide foot last night and I can't see anything that even looks like thread. I have the top of the foot (micro)

I would put a tip on and fish it. Go from there. Not sure of original length though.
