Greg,
I did not use any other epoxy other than Flex-Coat high build and have never and any problems other than applying the first coat to thick. I have sence started using the Flex-Coat Light for the first coat and the high build for following coats. It's easier for me that way.
I used the Flex- Coat C.P. for years but have discovered that Gudebrod 811 is much better as it applies and stay

Hi Hunter,
I have built almost a dozen rods for clients using Shikari SHII blanks. Everyone has raved about their
new rods and are very happy. I used the P762, P764, and the MB704. This was my first experience
with Shikari blanks, I am looking forward to building on more of their products. I am also a big fan of
G. Loomis but they are a bit pricey but worth every penny! Good Luck!

Hi Matt,
I aggree with Tom and Jim. However, if your reel has the appropiate mounting hardware
you could forgo the reel seat and build the entire handle with "cork tape". The reel could
then be mounted anywhere along the handle. Persons with different arm lengths and preferences could use the rod with the same comfort.
Some builders do not care for cork tape but I have found it

All Star should have the spec's on there website but I always wait until I have the blank in hand
and measure myself so as to get the best fit possible from the start. I don't know much $ I have
spent on parts that didn't fit as intended and of course, had to make due or reorder additional
components! Especially handel sets and or reel seats!
Good luck with the rod!

I aggree with everyone else regarding masking tape arbors. It works in a pinch but duct tape
and drywall tape is far better. I'm sold on the flex-coat arbors and beleive that is the way to go!
They are great! However, if sensitivity is big issue, use the graphite arbors as there is nothing
better execpt maybe solid hardwood but there is a cost factor there.

Hi Al,
I also have used zip ties to hold my guides on the blank and they work good! I have recently used
"heat shrink" tubing ( the type used for electrical wiring connections) and I find it also work very well
and allows easy adjusting when stress testing your guide placment. As for the reel seat, the webbed
tape is the best in my opinion. The "underwrap" idea is a good o

Can anyone explain the proporties of a fly rod blank as compaired to spinning/casting blanks?
I was taught years ago the only differance between a flyrod blank and spinning blanks was the
action. Is it common to build say, a 7wt. flyrod using a med/hvy 8-17lb casting/spinning blank or
vise/versa? I know some builders use flyrod blanks to make some awsome spinning rods but I
haven't heard of t

3401. Re: Spin/Fly Rod
Hey Mark,
Now thats what was I concerned about mostly. I have never fly fished or built a fly rod and because
fly rods are built so much different than a spinning rod, I assumed that if I built the rod more in a spinning
configueration it would not work well as a fly rod. Not so? Why then are the components so different?
Does fly line flow through a standerd tip top very well?
The handle I

Buddy,
Don Burgess in Washington told me the same thing about the reel seats. Thanks for the comformation.
The handle will be a standard fly rod configuration with a short section of the blank exposed on the end
with a fighting butt. I believe this will enable the user to cast the rod with two hands when using as a
spinning rod and have something to rest against the forearm for leverage when

Thanks Buddy & Travis,
Will a fly reel seat accept an ultra-light spinning reel or would you recommend a #15 spinning seat?

3404. Spin/Fly Rod
Hi All,
I have plans to build a spinning/Fly pack rod. I have a 4 piece boron 3-4wt. blank and I am
concidering using REC spinning guides for the stripper and 2nd guides with REC snake
guides for the remaining guides with of course a REC fly tip top. I have built many spinning
and casting rods but this will be my first fly rod so I'm looking for any suggestions or advise.
Thanks and tight l
