3302. Re: Thread Arts History
Wonderful Thread !!
I wish I had more to add here. I saw my first custom rod the mid 80's. It was a med/heavy salt water live bait rod.
All of the custom rods I saw were salt water rods with single or double diamond wraps and I thought they very cool!
I saw Dale's book "Advanced Custom Rod Building" (volume 1) in 1987 and bought it on the spot!
At that time all the rods I and oth

Hey Clyde,
I have not used LS rod finnish but bubbles are a common problem with all epoxy rod finnishing products.
A couple of things I do to minimize bubbles is to mix slowly then pour the epoxy onto a flat surface like tin
foil. ( the flat surface spreds it out and allows the bubbles to rise and pop) After applying the finnish I look
very closely for remaining bubbles and apply heat (quickl

Hey Brian,
Yes, addictive and without a cure that I am aware of ! It appears also that
the only things that can pull me away from this forum is WORK and RodMaker
magazine ! LOL !
I haven't built a spiral rod yet but have been researching the task. You can
do a search fo the board entries and get a lot of info. Also, a recent issue of
RodMaker Magazine has covered a new spiral system

Al,
I am only guessing at this but I do believe the shorter rod length
and bent rear grip all have to do with leverage and comfort.
A long rod allows the fish to put more pressure on the fisherman
instead of the other way around! The fish pulls on the long end of
the fulcrum lever with the fisherman on the short end of the stick
shall we say. It's like the fish using a pry bar on you!

Question:
Why would blotching occure due to unpacked thread wraps?
What is the blotching anyway? The blank is not black. The
thread color is not black. Where does the black blotches
come from? I assume it caused by chemical reaction of some
sort. Like I said previously, I have not experienced this my self
but I did see my Dad's rod's and it's not pretty!
Also, I just completed applying

Tom, Paully, & Bill,
Thanks guys! My Dad is new to to rod building so it's probable that
the threads were not as tight as they needed to be. Coverage may
have also been an issue but he told me he did apply 3 or 4 coats of
the 811 CP.
Going to do the tests and if any "strange" results are found I'll be
passing the findings on to the board.
Have a great weekend !!

Hi All,
My Dad has had this problem with 2 of the rods he built. He and I think maybe not
enough color preserver was applied but from what I am aware of, epoxy will just
render the regular nylon thread opaque. Correct?I have never seen or heard of this problem occuring before now and
I have built about 100 rods! Also, he said he used gudebrod mettalic thread on 1
of the rods and that thread

Dick,
I second Bill B.'s suggestion to buy a kit instead of rebuilding the casting rod. By the time you add
up the cost of rebuilding the casting rod you could have purchased a new kit with almost everything
included ( some kits even come with color preserver and finnish! ) If your not going to use the casting
rod ever again take a kid fishing and give it to them!
Good Luck and HAVE FUN!!

Of course you are entitled to your opinion but did you have to bash him

Hi Dick,
First, I am sorry to here that you felt somewhat intimidated in your search for answers from rod builders on this board.
This forum was started to help people like yourself and anyone who wants to get started into or get better at building
custom fishing rods and also have a place to exchange ideas and opinions.

It's a misnomer that trimming a rod blank from the tip end will speed up the action
and trimming from the butt end will slow down the action.
Unfortunately, a lot of fisherman and beggining rod builders believe this to be true.
Was this issue brought up in an issue of RMM? If not. are there any plans too in the
near future?
Thanks all,

Tyler,
I second the comments made in favor of the Batson blanks!
Although I have not built on any of Cabella's blanks and therfore
cannot speak to their quality regardless of price.
You will not get the "Rainshadow's" quite as cheap as the Cabella's blanks
but you will not be dissappointed.
Batson Ent. is a sponcor of this board also!

Do aluminum oxide guide rings hold up to braid?
