61. Re: Why?
As Don said, it's a lot like tying flies, which i've been doing for years - i can add or change it to my own wants and desires; i'm catching fish on something i made (or in this case, built); and there's nothing like handing one to someone who knows you made this for them and seeing the joy on their faces both when they get it and when they use it.

The BVK is an excellent choice. I'm about to build a saltwater 6wt in it. I will use the Recoil guides. Will probably end up doing a 10wt as well. I like oversize tiptops on my S/W rods.

Spinning rod or casting? The first rod I built was a 6'6" H live bait casting rod. I made the rear grip 10". I ended up wishing I had made it a little longer. Because I cast the rod with both hands below the reel, it would feel better if my hands could be farther apart. It worked fine, and easy to maneuver on my kayak (that's the reason for the short rear grip). My next rid like it will

These are essentially golf club grips, right? I got that same email from GetBit. Wondered what these were like.

Thanks, Lou. I sold my wood lathe before i moved back to Georgia, so i don't see any wood handles in the near future.
My thinking with the cork tape was as an under layer for the tuna cord, not as an exposed grip. Just something to build it up underneath.

For the fish I'll be after with this rod, I won't be standing. I'll be oceanside in my Tarpon 160 fishing live bait. Those are not conditions conducive to standing. I do stand all the time if I'm fishing freshwater or up in the marsh in my Ultimate 12.
10" for the rear grip is actually shorter even than I had in mind. I'll keep playing with it.
I did wrap some 1/8" cord around t

69. RCLB79ML input
I've picked up a Rainshadow RCLB79ML to build into a live bait rod for big fall reds and some of the other big fish we get here in coastal Georgia. Would love some input from those of y'all who have built/used this rod as far as how to build it up. I'm toying with the idea of a cord wrapped lower grip. It'll be used primarily fished out of a kayak, so i'm thinking about a shorter rear grip. Butt

Lou, i checked out a 15-40 lb BPS spinning rod i have, and it's about the same. So not really as bad as i thought.
They really build out that light? I don't know that i'd say i know what i was doing necessarily :), but if i came close to that, i'd be impressed with the rod and with myself. Thanks

Looked at the specs. Dang. Butt of .900"? That's a big ol' heavy thing. I'm used to cork handles but thought I might try eva on these. That would probably help it not feel so massive.

72. Kayaks and Bulls
Hey y'all, the bull redfish will be showing up in numbers on the Georgia coast soon, and I'm thinking about rods for them. I'll b e fishing from kayaks almost exclusively, Looking to pair them with a Curado 300e (artificials) and an Avet SX (live crab). The first rod I built was a 6'6" glass rod, but it was damaged in the move down here, along with its backup, an old 7' Ugly Stik. Since I'll

73. Re: ROD geeks
I emailed Rodgeeks from their website shortly after posting my question here. I had a response from Bob within an hour and half, answering all my questions thoroughly. No idea yet what these blanks are actually like, but A) i plan to find out soon, and 2) that's excellent customer service before the sale.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but are these all two piece blanks, or are there also one piece?

This is a very useful search tool for most websites. It lets you search for common words and short words as well. You can put the search terms either before or after "site:url," but it is important that there be no space after the colon. Also, some sites do not permit the Google bot to crawl them, so this won't work on those, but i haven't found many of those. Thanks for posting this.

I got the Clemens I asked about earlier for so little I almost feel like I stole it, not that I'm complaining. It needs some work, most of which I think I can take care of myself. I need some help, though. The motor doesn't come on, but it, the wiring, pedal, and switch all look pretty ancient. I have another option for a motor already, if this one wont come to life.
There's a part I can't fi

Randolph, I did receive your email with the pictures. They were very helpful, thank you. The bad news is my bench top is very narrow, too narrow I think for this thread carriage to fit. Bummer.
The lathe should get here possibly tomorrow or more likely Monday. I'm excited to get it, even if I have to figure a different thread holder option until I save up for a new one from Renzetti. Thanks f

Randolph, would you mind sending me a couple of pics of the thread carriage at work? I think my email is visible here. Thanks.

Just got off the phone with Lily at Renzetti. Delightful conversation, and she was very helpful. She said that all the current parts were compatible with the base. There some slight differences, but the new will work with the old. I can, if I choose, replace the thread feeder with the new one as well; it will mount to the carriage base. She did say that the rollers on that base are different than

Thank you, Tom. Does the carriage look to be missing any parts? Just from the one pic, I can't tell how it's supposed to work.

Found a really good deal (maybe) on a Clemens wrapper for sale. Only has one rod support, but can't I get compatible ones from Renzetti? There's also the question of the thread carriage. I think this is it, but I'm not sure. If it is, does it look complete? How does it work?
Thanks,
Kevin

Hey y'all, haven't been around lately, just been too busy with life, job, etc. Some graphite rods have a very glossy blank throughout their length, for instance my St. Croix Legend Inshore. In this case, does the blank itself come that way, or is the whole rod covered in thread finish? Thanks for your help.

Started working on my rod wrapper over the weekend. The base is 8' long, just a good straight 2x6. I ran a 1/2x3/4 strip of molding along each side, with a piece of door stop on top of that to hold the rod supports in place.
The rod supports are ripped from a piece of 1x6 fir i had lying around; they're screwed to pieces cut from a cutting board i liberated from the kitchen.

The handles on the new Legend Xtremes are not the same ones that are on the much lower priced Rage rods. I recently ordered a Legend Tournament Bass rod; they were on a long backorder, so the dealer upgraded me (for the same price) to the same model in the Xtreme. I sent it back. The handle is hard; it has no give when you squeeze it. I'm not saying that's bad; i'm saying i didn't like it. I much
