Marc You can achieve any level of thickness or thinness with any of our finishes. It all depends on technique. Many people have many techniques. Personally, I use Flex Coat High Build and try to get it in one coat. I say try because sometimes I have stickups from the thread or some other blemish that needs to be shaved off and a second coat applied. If doing a two coat process, you can

Marc With heavier thread or under wraps you will have more air escaping the thread. Two options, thin the finish (if it is Flex Coat use acetone at a 1:15 ratio once mixed) and/or use a heat gun or torch to pop the bubbles.

Steve I believe you are referring to our Slip Clutch which is not intended for use with anything but finishing. It wouldn't make sense to put this on a power wrapping motor because it is a slip clutch and there would be no tension on your thread. The Self Adjusting Chuck is used on power wrappers as well as finishing and curing motors. We use this on both our power wrapper models, DL713

Gentlemen This is the kind of thing that never happens with our proven and easy to use Flex Coat Self Adjusting Chucks. Now available in two sizes 5/16" and 13/16", custom sizes available upon request. Works so well others have copied it, but not duplicated. So easy to use, no locking screws and rubber bands, just push the rod in and walk away. Check out our video at the link b

Yeah I will buy that, John. You don't want the heat in the blank.

Jim Your tip top was glued on with epoxy and that is the problem with epoxy. Since you heated it slowly the heat melted your rod. If you would heat it fast, and not allow the heat to penetrate to the rod blank, the epoxy would have broken down and the tip tip would release using pliers. In my opinion the only way I know to heat it fast is with a propane torch. Our Flex Coat Tip Top Adhes

405. Why?
Here at Flex Coat we want to do a little research and know why you build rods. So, why do you build rods?

Gentlemen Yes you can thin Flex Coat Finish with acetone. It is a 1 to 15 ratio so it doesn't take much. You should mix the Flex Coat normally and then once mixed, add the acetone and mix it again. You should know that this will thin the finish, extend the pot life, and add to the cure time. Thanks for bringing this up, David

Gentlemen We tackled this problem in one of our latest videos. Click the link below to watch the short video. Basically, we use this little knife sharpener called a Work Sharp, which is basically a mini belt sander. We use either the 80 or 220 grit belts to take down the tips of the guide foot to make a ramp straight up off the rod blank and on to the guide foot.

Gentlemen Sometimes the best solution is the one presented to you in the first place. Our mixing cups are guaranteed to not have any contaminants and are graduated so measuring is a breeze. They retail for under $4 per 100, and for those, like me, that can't do the math in your head, that is less than $0.04 per cup. Time and piece of mind are worth much more than that.

About your tacky finish.... Sounds like your finish is under mixed. Mix it longer. Use a round nonporous stirrer and mix it till it is crystal clear. Really study it to make sure there are no more streaks in it and that all of the two parts are combined completely. There is a big difference in finish mixed 99% and finish mixed 100%. Also, if you are using Flex Coat, we do not recommend

In our opinion, if you use Flex Coat it will stick to the first coat just like it stuck to your rod blank in the first place with NO SANDING NECESSARY. Of course this is provided that it is clean.

Bruno Here is our Cork Lathe Setup video. Check it out at the link below. We've turned down hundreds of cork handles over the years this way. This setup is easily stowed away so you won't have to dedicate valuable shop space to a lathe and keep the dust away from your wrapping and finishing station.
