Hey Roger! I've actually been out your way in the past... you helped me bore a hole in my already finished wooden handle! I'm in the Minnetonka area, are you around this weekend by chance? The rod is 9' long. will that be to long for your lathe?

Hey Everyone, I recently built a musky rod with an EVA handle. I love the rod, but what I thought was a nice size handle just happens to be to big of girth. I'd like to sand it down a bit but not sure of the easiest way to do it. My original thought is just to do it by hand with the turning lathe, but this would be a slow process. I could try to put it in my rod turner but I wouldn't be abl

Here is what I came up with... I used red and black bottom wrap and a black wrap on top. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Was curious... I thought about putting the decal under the second wrap. I did a test run with it and liked it but I decided against it as the rod isn't for me. Has anyone ever put the decal under the second wrap? kind of gives it a faded image...

Do you use a power wrapper of some kind that you can adjust the speed? I tend to get the best straight edge by letting the the wrapper do the work at a higher speed. Just leaving the brush tip on the bottom edge of the wrap and slowly walking it onto the blank as the rod speeds at a higher speed.

Thank's for the help! I'll be trying the red/black bottom with black over top. I don't need anything to flashy, just a nice looking pattern.

Hey everyone, I know this seems to be a reoccurring topic but I'm having trouble just getting a black and red tiger wrap. Could you guys let me know what color combinations worked best for you to get a nice red and black mixed together wrap? Appreciate the help,

Thanks fro the replies guys, I'm just looking for some rubber ones. I need afew for my most current build and instead of buying just a few I thought why not buy a whole kit. Thinking about it, maybe I'll just order a fair amount of the most common sizes I use. I don't see my self using every one from a kit so I'll save the $$

Hello, Thinking about purchasing a kit of winding checks so I have a bunch on hand. However, I'm just thinking if it's really worth it? I most likely wont use all the sizes and what I've found looks pretty expensive plus shipping. Just wondering if anyone knows where to find a cheaper kit, or if it's even worth buying. Thanks, Jon

Hey all, Want to start turning some EVA I have to make some handles. I went to the hardware store to find some steel rod to make a few different size mandrels out of but found they didn't have the correct sizes I need. Anyone have any tips on making a decent mandrel? Is steel rod the way to go? I'm guessing the larger hardware stores would care what I need (menards, HD)? Thanks, Jon

Looks like Thorne still sells it, I'm sure they will help with the application, however does any one know what kind of glue they use to put it on the blank?

I'll second Bills Comment, You may want to go with a smaller "mini" lathe and build the handle off the blank.. this will limit room needed to turn the handle, plus can be managed if a slip happens. I know I've had my fiar share of mistakes that needed rebuild. Best of luck!

I'd tell you to contact and talk to some of the experienced rod builders in you area. When I started out I went to a small class and kept in touch with the man who put it on. Through him I've met some really talented and experienced builders around the state. Also, this forum is full of all the experience out there so be sure to ask questions when they come up, I have learned a lot by just askin

Hey all, Going to jump into a few musky builds...get ready for next season. I've built a few on the MHX and Batson RX6 blanks. This time around I wanted to try out a few other brands I haven't used yet such as RODgeeks, St.Croix...ect. I know there are a number of them out there, just looking for any recommendations regarding blanks you have used int he bast and how you liked them. Looking a

Hey all, Doing a rebuild of my girlfriends old fly rods... I'm just about done stripping the guides and want to shine them up a bit. I was thinking steel wool might do the trick, any other suggestions? Thanks!

Hey all, Was just wondering, besides the look and finish of the rod, is there any different benefits that come with getting a matte finish rod instead of one with a gloss finish? I was looking to get a matte blank for a musky build I want to do but the blanks I'm looking at only come in glossy black. Just curious to know... Thanks! Jon

Hey everyone, I have a friend asking me info about fly rod blanks as he is thinking about buying a new one... However, I have never used a fly rod, everything I build is on a spinning or casting rod. He asked me the questions below, any help would be appreciated, "Our friend Gilbert is considering to buy a new fly rod made by St. Croix. He seemed to remember that you purchase St. Cro

I clear coat after using Krylon as well. Also, after I put on one coat I lightly sand the blank and do another, this ususally fills in mostt the gaps. Takes about 6-7 days to "fully" dry.

28. CPA's
Been researching for a while on how to go about selling fishing rods. Most of my research has come back to me talking with an experienced CPA so I don't miss any tax payments or write offs. So, I started researching CPA's in MN but noticed I really don't know who to be looking for. Any one know of any CPA's with experience in Excise tax? Thanks, Jon

If you do use an alchohol torch, please be careful as to how long you apply the heat. I learned the hard way that, to much heat towards the tip of the rod and you're likely to melt/crack the rod blank...no where to go from there

Hey all, Was going to replace a few guides for a buddy but I don't have the rods in hand and want to order the parts so I thought I'd se if anyone knew the sizes on the following guides. He's got a Musky innovations rod with the 4th guide from the but that needs replaced, and a tip top and a Musky Innovations rod (the tip I should be able to figure out). If anyone knows these or has one of thes
