Hey all,
Was just wondering, besides the look and finish of the rod, is there any different benefits that come with getting a matte finish rod instead of one with a gloss finish? I was looking to get a matte blank for a musky build I want to do but the blanks I'm looking at only come in glossy black. Just curious to know... Thanks! Jon Re: Matte vs. Gloss Finish

Jon,
You can always sand all of the finish off the blank and leave the blank with a matt natural finish. Several manufacturers have used this for their rods for years. Be safe Re: Matte vs. Gloss Finish

Jon,
Any time you do "inspections", do it under very intense light and multiple magnification. Easy to see defects if the light is bright and the magnification is great. Be safe Re: Matte vs. Gloss Finish

A finish on a blank can add a little weight. Should not be an issue on a Musky rod! Some like the matte as it does not reflect light, which may spook fish. Again, would not think this is an issue with Muskies. Re: Matte vs. Gloss Finish

I like gloss whenever I can get it. Looks better, expect that spooking fish is not really an issue, and the weight is, in my opinion, negligible. Finally, if you screw up and end up with ragged edges on your wraps, it will most likely not show. I cannot imagine roughing up a good gloss to get matte.
